The New Subaru Baja Pickup, Separating Truth From Fiction

Is Subaru going to bring back the Baja pickup truck? I'll answer that question and give you new information that has come to light. You might be surprised.

A new-release Baja?

Could there be a thrilling new-release Subaru Baja pickup truck on the horizon? This possibility certainly causes excitement among Subaru enthusiasts. But how realistic is it?

The Subaru Baja pickup is a hot topic with Subaru enthusiasts. A lot of information is floating around, but most of it is false. In my report, I'll clear up fact from fiction. Let's start with what Subaru says.

First and foremost, Subaru of America has not released any information saying there will be a new release of the Baja pickup. They have also not revealed that there will not be a new Baja pickup release.

Subaru has never released information before any new model launch, and they won't start now.

Before we delve into the new information, let's ensure we're on solid ground by distinguishing fact from fiction in the Baja pickup saga.

Fact:

You can rest assured that Subaru is fully dedicated to its current lineup, with new models in the pipeline. This focus may mean a new Subaru Baja pickup is not on the immediate horizon.

In the next five to six years, there will be three new electric SUVs and new Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback hybrid trim levels for U.S. customers. You can read about them in my report here for additional information.

Subaru is one of the smallest Japanese automakers, and they don't have the financial resources to launch a new Baja pickup along with the other models coming by 2030.

Fiction:

You can find many YouTube videos that say Subaru is bringing out a new Baja pickup. There are even images that these videos include that are made to look real. Check out my AI image above as an example.

I don't believe any of these reports, and neither should you. They are not true; they are total fiction. Their job is to get you to watch the video because the more views, the more money they make. They are professional YouTubers, and that's what they are good at.

Fact:

A new Subaru Baja pickup would not be a high-volume model. They would likely sell around 10,000 - 15,000 new-release Baja pickups a year in the U.S. market. However, they could sell more if they offered a Baja Wilderness trim in addition to a standard model.

The new Baja pickup's MSRP after development costs would likely be around $35,000 to $39,000 for the standard model and more for the rugged outdoor-themed Wilderness trim ($40,000-$45,000).

New pickup truck competition.

Subaru would be competing with pickup trucks like the new Ford Maverick. The starting price for the 2025 Ford Maverick is $27,890, and the top-of-the-line Lobo model starts at $42,090.

The good news is that Subaru would not be taking customers away from Ford. Subaru's faithful would be buying a new-release Baja pickup. Again, Subaru needs to recoup its costs to make it profitable.

Can they sell enough to make it feasible? That's the million-dollar question Subaru executives will need to figure out.

Now, here's new Baja information.

The last time I reported the U.S. Patent Office Baja trademark name update in my report here, Subaru of America renewed the patent name in June 2013.

But since that report, I discovered that on Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 9:27 am Easter Standard Time, Subaru of America renewed the BAJA nameplate again.

A Notice of Registration Renewal under Section 9 says, "The declaration of use or excusable nonuse filed for the above-identified registration meets the requirements of Section 8 of the Trademark Act, 15 U.S.C. §1058. The Section 8 declaration is accepted."

"Status: The registration has been renewed."

This is a significant development. Subaru of America keeps the Baja name alive.

The BAJA patent is live and registered by Subaru of America, not Subaru Corporation. This tells me Subaru of America wants Subaru Corporation to return the Baja pickup to its all-wheel-drive lineup sometime in the future. The question now is when.

The Baja pickup is the Subaru model I want to see revived, and it looks more promising now than ever. It appears that Subaru of America does, too.

Enthusiasts who want to see a new Subaru Baja pickup in the Japanese automaker's all-wheel-drive lineup have more hope after the latest U.S. Patent Office renewal. Stay tuned.

Yes, I'd definitely buy a Subaru truck if they have a hybrid. Be the only way I'd give up my Forster. It's a 2018 with only 74K on the dial and it runs great just make sure you use top-tier gas.

The wife and I currently own 2 Subaru’s. A 14 Impreza and a 24 Outback Wilderness. I would most definitely buy a Wilderness Baja if it’s made available.

I would certainly buy a new Baja especially if they build it on the Outback or better yet Ascent frame. Just chop off the cabin behind the back doors to open it up for the bed.

I would love to see the Subaru Baja return. I bought the 2003 Baja and loved it. Unfortunately, when I crashed into a mountain a few years ago, it was totalled. However, I am retired now and it looks like I won't be able to afford a new Baja if they do release a new model. 😪

My late wife and I purchased a 2015 Outback. At that time I inquired about a Subaru pickup, and was told to wait a few years. Now I am told wait till the 2030s. The Baja is a sharp around town ride. My dream is for a robust off road, brute of a truck. One to rival the Tacoma.

As a former Subaru salesman & BRAT owner I had really hoped Subaru would have pulled the trigger on an updated BAJA. I recently turned in my F150 and glanced at the Maverick & Ranger only to end up in Hyundai Santa Cruz as it was the only affordable option with the Ford dealerships playing too many games with the sticker prices. My wife currently drives a Crosstrek but I wanted something with the bed which unfortunately ruled out a Subaru. Come on Subaru, wake up! Now is the time to introduce more people to the Subaru brand!

My first Subaru was a new 1980 GL Wagon. I have owned a 2003 Outback, 2011 Legacy, 2014 Legacy, 2019 Crosstrek and currently own a 2021 Crosstrek and 2024 Outback. I have tried to find a reaspnably priced, low mileage, 05 or 06 BAJA for several years without success.
If there was a current model on the market I would own it !

I have a 2003 Baja with 50,000 miles on it I got from my sister. She had a new model that was totaled in an accident. She called Subaru headquarters to order a new one but they said no plans to sell 2025 Bajas. Sad for Subaru.

Mike (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 11:38AM

I would like to see a wilderness package on a new baja that looks more like a truck than a el camino.

Andrew Z (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 12:10PM

Yes, I would buy a new off-road Baja. I owned a 2006 turbo model and loved it. It was an auto ahead of it's time. The pass through rear door was pure genius.

Chuck Gray (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 12:16PM

Yes I would I will be buying in 2025 and would have bought one even in the upper 40k range. I have Subarus now but like the small Bed utility in the compact truck and if no Baja will be looking at the ford maverick instead

Oscar Will (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 12:41PM

Along with keeping my Forester I would be in line for a Baja truck version. Then I would sell my 2003 Chevy Avalanche.

There are times I need a small truck and not having a big lumbering beast would be preferred.

Bring on that Baja!

Robin Bates (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 1:39PM

Yes, I'd love to see the Baja pickup with Wilderness trim available. It suits my needs better than the Outback I currently have.

CRAIG (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 1:50PM

Back in around 2004 I bought my first WRX, the Baja was still for sale, I think? I considered it, but wanted the WRX. Back then they really weren't selling. They were discontinued, and the prices for used ones soared. My daughter wanted one, but they were too pricey. She now gas a SantaCruz, which she loves, but the Baja would be the perfect competition in that small pick up slot.

Robert Balliger (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 4:25PM

I would be interested in a higher level Baja pickup. I own a 219 STI currently and it is a great car. My family have been Subaru owners since 1979.
The brat was a great tiny truck but a more powerful and greater Baja would be the ticket. I own 3 trucks currently too. I would upgrade or add a Subaru pickup to my herd. Thanks!

Larry Duhon (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 4:47PM

I would buy one now.
I currently have a 2005 baja turbo with standard transmission 5 speed.

I WOULD BUY ONE TODAY. BEEN SAVING UP TO BUY A NEW BAJA FOR YEARS.
l get asked all the time about selling my Baja. Some people think it a new model
I hope they will consider doing a new Baja.

Barry Rupp (not verified)    September 16, 2024 - 10:00PM

Ive had a brat and a Baja Loved them both!! Would definitely buy one We now own a Prius and a small 4wd truck Both could go to make room for our Baja!

Michael Lancaster (not verified)    September 17, 2024 - 1:25AM

I would love to see an actual pickup truck line for Subaru honestly. A full size pickup would be very cool as well but I doubt that will be in the works any time soon. I heard also they where bringing back the brat, that I would be more interested in as it was an actual truck where the Baja was a car/ truck combo that I’m just not interested in. It would be cool if they are using the Baja name to make an actual truck as it sounds way cooler than brat and not make it another car truck. I have no interest in an el camino kinda vehicle. I would hope they would be flexible in the body as well as a lot of people don’t like the crew cab for a truck. I know the maverick only comes in Crew cab as an option and Is the biggest reasons I don’t want it. An extended cab would be great for me as I think they look better that way and offer more room for the bed. The third thing that would be big for me is a manual shift. I’ve been watching these videos or looking for info a lot on this topic of Subaru and adding a small truck to their line and one of the big things I’ve been watching for is so if you can get it in manual or not. I know as of now they are only keeping manual on their more sporty vehicles. I feel this is a mistake on their part but to not add it in a pickup to me would be worse than not having it on their other cars. There’s just something to hauling a load and having a manual shift that no automatic or CVT can compare to.

I am a first time car buyer, and not particularly into cars so this was a learning curve for me. The first car I had was a jeep liberty, I hated it. Second one is a subaru legacy 2013 base modle. I love the thing. I like the classy look, all wheel drive all the time and it handles the snow exceptionally well. I've backed up steep roads f150s can't get down.

I work in the trades and I've come to realize that I can't tow anything with it. So if im going to upgrade I'm looking for a more capable vehicle. I have my sites on the ford maveric and the subaru outback woodland.

It looks to me that by every metric the ford maveric wins... even on gas milage. And having true 4x4 and real lockers.

I would seriously consider this baha truck if it had everything the ford maveric offers
