The New Subaru Baja Pickup, Separating Truth From Fiction

Is Subaru going to bring back the Baja pickup truck? I'll answer that question and give you new information that has come to light. You might be surprised.

A new-release Baja?

Could there be a thrilling new-release Subaru Baja pickup truck on the horizon? This possibility certainly causes excitement among Subaru enthusiasts. But how realistic is it?

The Subaru Baja pickup is a hot topic with Subaru enthusiasts. A lot of information is floating around, but most of it is false. In my report, I'll clear up fact from fiction. Let's start with what Subaru says.

First and foremost, Subaru of America has not released any information saying there will be a new release of the Baja pickup. They have also not revealed that there will not be a new Baja pickup release.

Subaru has never released information before any new model launch, and they won't start now.

Before we delve into the new information, let's ensure we're on solid ground by distinguishing fact from fiction in the Baja pickup saga.

Fact:

You can rest assured that Subaru is fully dedicated to its current lineup, with new models in the pipeline. This focus may mean a new Subaru Baja pickup is not on the immediate horizon.

In the next five to six years, there will be three new electric SUVs and new Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback hybrid trim levels for U.S. customers. You can read about them in my report here for additional information.

Subaru is one of the smallest Japanese automakers, and they don't have the financial resources to launch a new Baja pickup along with the other models coming by 2030.

Fiction:

You can find many YouTube videos that say Subaru is bringing out a new Baja pickup. There are even images that these videos include that are made to look real. Check out my AI image above as an example.

I don't believe any of these reports, and neither should you. They are not true; they are total fiction. Their job is to get you to watch the video because the more views, the more money they make. They are professional YouTubers, and that's what they are good at.

Fact:

A new Subaru Baja pickup would not be a high-volume model. They would likely sell around 10,000 - 15,000 new-release Baja pickups a year in the U.S. market. However, they could sell more if they offered a Baja Wilderness trim in addition to a standard model.

The new Baja pickup's MSRP after development costs would likely be around $35,000 to $39,000 for the standard model and more for the rugged outdoor-themed Wilderness trim ($40,000-$45,000).

New pickup truck competition.

Subaru would be competing with pickup trucks like the new Ford Maverick. The starting price for the 2025 Ford Maverick is $27,890, and the top-of-the-line Lobo model starts at $42,090.

The good news is that Subaru would not be taking customers away from Ford. Subaru's faithful would be buying a new-release Baja pickup. Again, Subaru needs to recoup its costs to make it profitable.

Can they sell enough to make it feasible? That's the million-dollar question Subaru executives will need to figure out.

Now, here's new Baja information.

The last time I reported the U.S. Patent Office Baja trademark name update in my report here, Subaru of America renewed the patent name in June 2013.

But since that report, I discovered that on Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 9:27 am Easter Standard Time, Subaru of America renewed the BAJA nameplate again.

A Notice of Registration Renewal under Section 9 says, "The declaration of use or excusable nonuse filed for the above-identified registration meets the requirements of Section 8 of the Trademark Act, 15 U.S.C. §1058. The Section 8 declaration is accepted."

"Status: The registration has been renewed."

This is a significant development. Subaru of America keeps the Baja name alive.

The BAJA patent is live and registered by Subaru of America, not Subaru Corporation. This tells me Subaru of America wants Subaru Corporation to return the Baja pickup to its all-wheel-drive lineup sometime in the future. The question now is when.

The Baja pickup is the Subaru model I want to see revived, and it looks more promising now than ever. It appears that Subaru of America does, too.

Enthusiasts who want to see a new Subaru Baja pickup in the Japanese automaker's all-wheel-drive lineup have more hope after the latest U.S. Patent Office renewal. Stay tuned.

It's Your Turn

I am a very satisfied owner of an 06 NA. Bought it at 36K, recently rolled over 300K. We bought a new, 2023 Forester Wilderness, endorsing our belief n Subarus. If a Baja Wilderness was available, old reliable could go happily to the pasture.

I WOULD BUY A subaru Baja if they brought it back and would buy the wilderness model if it were an option... particularly if they had it in a hybrid.

In my opinion this all comes down to 1 critical question that I think we all know the answer to.
Would it ever be offered without a CVT?
If not then I am running away, I loathe that half of the powertrain and they have only doubled down in recent years.

M Moore (not verified)    September 17, 2024 - 8:35PM

I currently own a 2003 Subaru Baja and would definitely purchase a new model Baja if Subaru were to produce one.

J Luz (not verified)    September 17, 2024 - 10:26PM

I would buy the Baja if were released immediately!! Our 1st Subaru we bought was a 2015 Forester followed by our 2017 WRX. After trading in the Forester, the wife ended up with a new 2024 Crosstrek earlier this year. Since my WRX relatively low mileage on it, I've been looking for a small pickup to haul small home projects and our mountain bikes. Subaru please make the Baja ASAP!!!!

Lets hope first that the Baja comes back. Lets also hope it has some BRAT dna in it as the brat was almost unbreakable. If SOA can pull this off, I'm definitely in.

I would be very interested in the new Baja pickup, depending on size, back seat legroom, price, etc. We own a 2020 Subaru Forester, which we dearly love. If the Baja is anything like the Forester, except in pickup form, it should be a hot seller.

Classis die hard subaru fan here, modified 1999 legacy sus.....I will only get a brand new subaru if it is a factory Baja. I hope this reaches those who can allow me to stay brand loyal. Give us something. We've been begging for almost 20 years.

Bob Hartman (not verified)    September 19, 2024 - 9:01AM

I'm a fervent, as is my family, Subaru fan. I have a Crosstrek and there's also an Ascent in the house. My children drive Subaru and no one is driving their first of the marque. I want to see a four door pickup with a six foot bed and maybe a cab-plus with an eight foot bed, based on the Ascent platform.

The only vehicle I would leave the line for is a Toyota Tacoma. It's the only model choice that Subaru has decided not to offer me, kinda sad.

My wife and I have owned five Subaru’s and I presently own a Honda Ridgeline “Black Edition” , but would seriously switch to a new Subaru mid-sized pickup in lieu of the Ridgeline if you were to build them wether you name the Baha or what ever! I am in!!!!

Pat D (not verified)    September 19, 2024 - 11:11PM

Would love to see the pickup come back. & if it does, gotta have the full trim, all the bells & whistles edition. Just hoping if it comes to fruition, that we get it here in Canada too.

Edgar Marvin (not verified)    September 20, 2024 - 6:07AM

As a painter I've worked out of a 2001 Outback 3.0 and a 2014 Forester. I miss the 01 it was the best, but I didn't take care of it and drove it into the ground. If I were to get a Baja I would want to put a cap on the back and have a rack to put stuff on the top. At least the cab will stay clean unlike the cars where dust from my equipment flew around when the windows were down. And yeah like some people here I'd like to see better towing capabilities, which means more horsepower and torque.

Show me a Baja Wilderness Hybrid trim; and my response would be, shut-up and just take my money!

I have a 2023 Crosstrek with the standard transmission, (premium trim), and absolutely LOVE IT!

If Subaru released either a Baja Wilderness Hybrid trim OR a gasoline-powered Baja Wilderness WITH standard transmission trim I WOULD TOTALY GET IT!

My 2023 Crosstrek would remain the primary family vehicle & the Baja Wilderness would replace my Jeep Wrangler 2-door standard transmission as my weekend warrior play thing.

As a more realistic view, my second Subaru will most likely be a 'Hybrid Crosstrek Wilderness' if such a trim is ever offered.

I still own and drive my 2005 Baja. I love her! In a perfect world I will restore her and also be able to buy a new one! Please 🙏 make a new Baja Subaru!!!!

MantaRay (not verified)    September 22, 2024 - 3:54PM

I am a Subaru Truck Guy!!!
I have been since the beginning.
I have owned 2 Brats (1978, 1984), and 1 Baja (2003). I loved each and everyone of them. I am now on my 4th Subie, a Crosstrek (only because there was no truck available in 2016). I have put 100's of thousands miles in these vehicles and never been disappointed in them (other than some rust issues with both of the Brats).

I have been hearing rumors of a truck returning to their lineup since 2018 and have been waiting for its release. I was extremely impressed and excited with the prototype mock-ups that I have seen. But, alas, only rumors and hype. This year with those rumors heating to a fever pitch, I thought the 2025 Baja was finally going to be a reality. I went to my Subaru dealer to have them contact me as soon as they were excepting orders for the new truck.

I got the greatest disappointment when they said that the Baja was NOT going to happen any time in the foreseeable future.

That does it!!! I am finished with Subaru. They have been making the same tired cars for more than 8 years. No major changes. Same old stuff with higher price tags.

I am going to buy a Hyundai Santa Cruz this week.
Bye, Bye Subaru.

Marilyn (not verified)    September 23, 2024 - 12:13PM

Absolutely, I’ve been waiting for Subaru to begin remaking the Baja. I learned to drive manual on my mom’s Subaru Brat in the 80’s, purchased a 2005 Baja Manual turbo, still runs like a champ. In the next year, I’ll will be giving my son the Baja as his first car. I’ve been holding out buying anything new, hoping Subaru releases a new Baja.

Tony Jerolino (not verified)    September 23, 2024 - 1:49PM

Yes I would buy the new BAJA if Subaru made one. I have a 2011 forester and I love it. I live in Vermont where winters are mean, and of course we need AWD or 4wd, but after driving the forester in the Vermont winters, it's the only truck I would buy, JEEP , no thanks , they have way to may problems. I know I have one
Build it, please!!

Bill Stanley (not verified)    October 3, 2024 - 8:09PM

I am super interested in a 4door version of a BAJA 4X4 truck. My preference is to purchase a 2nd year production unit. Hopefully in 2026? That is if Subaru releases a 2025 model in the next several months? I'd also like to see the 2.4 turbo engine offered. Be it standard or optional. A CVT tranny is fine by me. The CVT bugs should be behind us by now. As I've been rowing through the gears since the early 60's. Subaru should be able to tweak the engine management software to give the hard core off roaders a crawler CVT mode option.
All the best Bill

I am the owner of 2006 Turbo Baja which I purchased new in 2006. It has about 56,000
miles on it. I also own a 2020 Subaru Outback Limited (my 5th Subaru, including 2007 WRX STI Limited). Been waiting for a new Baja truck replacement from Subaru. I am often approached by persons asking me if I would be willing to sell it to them. It has useful features that other small trucks lack - the grossly overpriced Santa Cruz is a good example. I am 84 years old; how many more years do I have to wait to get a new
Subaru Baja truck ??

Marvin Hawk (not verified)    October 7, 2024 - 9:48PM

Ok, 7-8 K more for a Subi Baja VS a Found On Road Dead Maverick. It's a no brainer; given the long term reliability of Subaru and the AWD options it's money well invested. Come on folks make this happen I'm tired of having to use the old beat up Soccer Mom van to haul the trash cans to the dump on Saturday's.

Michelle Twohig (not verified)    October 8, 2024 - 12:36PM

Sign me up for a Subaru Baja Wilderness PHEV with an EV range over 30! My horse's hay is messin' up my 2007 Lexus 350RX despite the made-to-fit tarp! I'm an Outback girl from WAY back and would love to support Subaru again!

Jeffrey Luce (not verified)    October 12, 2024 - 12:04PM

I would like to see the Subaru Baja have a wilderness edition more suited for off-road use. If so, I would definitely be interested.

Growing up in the north east but now living in Florida, I have owned several Subarus in my past and my daughter currently has a Subaru Forrester that she absolutely loves.

Very dependable and well built vehicles. Thank you, Subaru.

Kevin Myers (not verified)    October 15, 2024 - 7:11PM

I would definitely buy a Subaru Baja if they brought this model back. I would also consider the Wilderness model.

Dan Popp (not verified)    October 15, 2024 - 7:19PM

I would love to see a new Baja model from Subaru, I would even pre-order one. A pre-order site from Subaru would help Guage interest and fund development cost.

Soimon Davis (not verified)    October 20, 2024 - 10:51AM

The first batch of Subaru trucks would sell out instantly. All the Subaru faithful know this, I just wish Subaru knew it and believed it, too. Mid size trucks - nearly every household has one these days. Please don't be late to the party, Subaru. I already bought a Honda Ridgeline because I had to give up waiting for Subaru to make a mid size truck.
