The New Subaru Baja Pickup, Separating Truth From Fiction

Is Subaru going to bring back the Baja pickup truck? I'll answer that question and give you new information that has come to light. You might be surprised.

A new-release Baja?

Could there be a thrilling new-release Subaru Baja pickup truck on the horizon? This possibility certainly causes excitement among Subaru enthusiasts. But how realistic is it?

The Subaru Baja pickup is a hot topic with Subaru enthusiasts. A lot of information is floating around, but most of it is false. In my report, I'll clear up fact from fiction. Let's start with what Subaru says.

First and foremost, Subaru of America has not released any information saying there will be a new release of the Baja pickup. They have also not revealed that there will not be a new Baja pickup release.

Subaru has never released information before any new model launch, and they won't start now.

Before we delve into the new information, let's ensure we're on solid ground by distinguishing fact from fiction in the Baja pickup saga.

Fact:

You can rest assured that Subaru is fully dedicated to its current lineup, with new models in the pipeline. This focus may mean a new Subaru Baja pickup is not on the immediate horizon.

In the next five to six years, there will be three new electric SUVs and new Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback hybrid trim levels for U.S. customers. You can read about them in my report here for additional information.

Subaru is one of the smallest Japanese automakers, and they don't have the financial resources to launch a new Baja pickup along with the other models coming by 2030.

Fiction:

You can find many YouTube videos that say Subaru is bringing out a new Baja pickup. There are even images that these videos include that are made to look real. Check out my AI image above as an example.

I don't believe any of these reports, and neither should you. They are not true; they are total fiction. Their job is to get you to watch the video because the more views, the more money they make. They are professional YouTubers, and that's what they are good at.

Fact:

A new Subaru Baja pickup would not be a high-volume model. They would likely sell around 10,000 - 15,000 new-release Baja pickups a year in the U.S. market. However, they could sell more if they offered a Baja Wilderness trim in addition to a standard model.

The new Baja pickup's MSRP after development costs would likely be around $35,000 to $39,000 for the standard model and more for the rugged outdoor-themed Wilderness trim ($40,000-$45,000).

New pickup truck competition.

Subaru would be competing with pickup trucks like the new Ford Maverick. The starting price for the 2025 Ford Maverick is $27,890, and the top-of-the-line Lobo model starts at $42,090.

The good news is that Subaru would not be taking customers away from Ford. Subaru's faithful would be buying a new-release Baja pickup. Again, Subaru needs to recoup its costs to make it profitable.

Can they sell enough to make it feasible? That's the million-dollar question Subaru executives will need to figure out.

Now, here's new Baja information.

The last time I reported the U.S. Patent Office Baja trademark name update in my report here, Subaru of America renewed the patent name in June 2013.

But since that report, I discovered that on Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 9:27 am Easter Standard Time, Subaru of America renewed the BAJA nameplate again.

A Notice of Registration Renewal under Section 9 says, "The declaration of use or excusable nonuse filed for the above-identified registration meets the requirements of Section 8 of the Trademark Act, 15 U.S.C. §1058. The Section 8 declaration is accepted."

"Status: The registration has been renewed."

This is a significant development. Subaru of America keeps the Baja name alive.

The BAJA patent is live and registered by Subaru of America, not Subaru Corporation. This tells me Subaru of America wants Subaru Corporation to return the Baja pickup to its all-wheel-drive lineup sometime in the future. The question now is when.

The Baja pickup is the Subaru model I want to see revived, and it looks more promising now than ever. It appears that Subaru of America does, too.

Enthusiasts who want to see a new Subaru Baja pickup in the Japanese automaker's all-wheel-drive lineup have more hope after the latest U.S. Patent Office renewal. Stay tuned.

I would love to see a new Baja model from Subaru, I would even pre-order one. A pre-order site from Subaru would help Guage interest and fund development cost.

The first batch of Subaru trucks would sell out instantly. All the Subaru faithful know this, I just wish Subaru knew it and believed it, too. Mid size trucks - nearly every household has one these days. Please don't be late to the party, Subaru. I already bought a Honda Ridgeline because I had to give up waiting for Subaru to make a mid size truck.

I would definitely be interested in a Subaru Baja. I currently am driving a 2022 Forester Wilderness and love it but could use more cargo room. We have 2 dogs that sit on the rear seat which only leaves the cargo area and roof for outdoor adventure gear and suitcases. I would like a hybrid Baja with towing capability, A Wilderness trim also sounds appealing.

I would love to see a new Baja pickup with wilderness trim introduced into the US market. if offered with a manual transmission, I would definitely be a buyer!

We have owned quite a few Subarus over the years. One of them was a Baja which we really did like. I thought it was very versatile. Presently have a 2022 Outback. We also have a Hyundai Santa Cruz which I would probably trade-in for a new Baja. I do hope Subaru comes out with a 2025 Baja.

I'm really hoping the potential release of a new Subaru Baja is not just gas.
Honestly I will wait to see if the 2025 Subaru Baja happens before buying ANY of the junk options out there, specifically a wayfar over-priced Tacoma TRD Pro, or other fake wannabe/neverwas crapola currently available by other auto makers

If/when subaru puts a baja on the market I will be at the dealership to buy it. I been waiting for years.

Mark Behning (not verified)    November 17, 2024 - 6:28PM

We would be buyers of a Subaru pickup. Family has a history of buying Subarus. Our needs have changed and her Forester no longer fits her needs and she has been shopping small pickups.

JASON BENNEFIELD (not verified)    November 20, 2024 - 7:08AM

I would absolutely buy a wilderness trimmed Baja. I own a 23 wilderness forester now and a 15 legacy. Try to have that ready before 2028 when I will have the forester paid off......I'll take mine in the olive green....

I have had a Baja in the past. Used it for more than ten years, then gave it to my son who still has it. I am now waiting for Mazda to bring the Baja back. I am most definitely in the market for the Baja.

Since the early 80's I had been a Subaru fan... BIG Time!! I have owned 2 Foresters, and me and my spouse have owned 3 Bajas,. My last Subarau was a Crosstrek... which I liked very much but sold after 2 years because I moved to a very rural area in ND and couldn't find a local dealer to be able to keep up the auto warranty. I currently own a Nissan Fronteer pick up, but wished for a Baja. I have been interested in checking out the KIA SANTA KRUZ (spelling?) but cost is too prohibitive yet. I will check out used models as I see them in the lots, however!! I would MUCH rather have a BAJA BECAUSE OF THE OVERALL QUALITY AND THE INDEPENDENT ALL-WHEELDRIVE!!!
There is no auto maker that can come close to the quality of the Subaru vehicles. The Subaru Baja is the perfect vehicle for busy, active, and adventurous people of all ages!!!! I got over 200k miles on all of my Subarus, except my Crosstrek... and if I could have found a local dealer it would still be driving great for me yet!!!
For all of us Baja fans. KIA WILL BE CASHING IN ON THE SANTA KRUZ MODELS IF SUBARU DOESN'T SEE WHAT THEY ARE MISSING AND GET THE ASSEBLY LINES GOING FOR THEIR BAJA!
The SUV craze started about the time they foolishly took the Baja off the market... They missed out! The Baja would currently be the most popular vehicle on the road today if they would have done a market survey!!! Ask the people! They will tell you what they want and need!!

Would love to see a Baja truck with wilderness package but I want ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel offered in it . Also could you offer those two options on the crosstrek

Jess Kibert (not verified)    January 31, 2025 - 6:48PM

I would love Subaru manufacturer
New Subaru Baja especially wilderness model and yes I would run to dealership buy one !!

Bill Davis (not verified)    February 6, 2025 - 4:32PM

I would definitely purchase/lease a new Baja. I love my outback wilderness and would like to see a Baja wilderness package.

Chelse J (not verified)    February 22, 2025 - 1:05PM

I was so upset when I found out the Internet news about a new Baja was fake! I was ready to go but one to replace my outback. Now idk what I'll do. I will never buy a Ford, and I love my sube. A new Baja would be a perfect fit. Subaru means quality. That's what I want.

David (not verified)    March 1, 2025 - 12:04PM

I would very likely buy a new Subaru Baja, maybe even a Brat, but I would really, really like to see some contained/hidden storage to replace the footwells when I currently put groceries, laptop bad, etc.

I am admittedly tired of rumors. I want to see something directly from Subaru/America.

Geno Andrade (not verified)    March 5, 2025 - 5:29PM

I would purchase a new Subaru Baja Truck without hesitation.
I have been waiting for years for them to return!

Ronald Crawford (not verified)    March 28, 2025 - 2:30PM

I am very interested in the 2025 Subaru Baja, especially if it would be made at an American plant to avoid the 25% tariff. I would like to know the length and height dimensions so I can insure that it would fit in the garage where my 2017 Outback resides.
