Will the Subaru BRZ finally get a turbocharged engine? It will if a new report from BestCarWeb is correct. The Japanese website says the next-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 sport coupe will get a new 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. And it will make its debut with hybrid technology.
The report says in the movement toward electrification, the two Japanese automakers are concerned it will be the end of the rear-drive BRZ and GR86 sport coupes with their current powertrain.

They said the next-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 are already being developed and will launch with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine plus hybrid power with the goal of launching the new model in 2025.
Toyota is taking the lead in the 2025 Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 development. And plans are that the 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed Subaru Boxer engine will be dropped in favor of the new powertrain. And the next-generation sports coupe will be developed with Toyota's engineering.

The current plan is to use a 1.6-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine from the GR Yaris or GR Corolla with a 2-clutch 1-motor hybrid system. The report further says the new BRZ/GR86 will adopt the Lexus IS platform with a shorter wheelbase.
The next-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 will live on but with a hybrid electric powertrain. Toyota's current 1.6-liter turbo produces 272ps (268 horsepower) in the GR Yaris. Still, they could improve power and performance with the new hybrid motor assist, and it will be more fuel efficient than the 2.4-liter Subaru Boxer engine. The report says the new 2025 Subaru BRZ/Toyota GR86 will have 295 horsepower.
The 2023 BRZ/GR86 2.4-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, so the new sports car will get a significant power upgrade. Subaru Corporation is tight-lipped and has not confirmed this new information from Japan.
For the next-generation Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 to survive, there will have to be powertrain changes made. Adopting a small turbocharged engine coupled with a Toyota hybrid technology makes sense. Stay tuned.

Glad I bought a 22..!! Adding a little sewing machine engine with a turbo will ruin the whole car. High revving NA boxer action is what its all about. Without a boxer, I dont want one.
