The Subaru Outback Is In No Slow Mode

Subaru has to love the Outback. Some models are up and down in sales volume. The midsize SUV is the model of consistency, but significant changes are coming to the Outback. Can the Outback take the next step up?

It's why the Outback is so popular.

It's no wonder the Outback is so popular. Its consistent performance and loyal customer base make it a standout in Subaru's lineup.

Subaru's customers love the Outback midsize SUV because it offers few surprises. It's the model of consistency. I'll show you what happened in July and then explain why the Outback is a top pick for many customers and the significant changes coming.

Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales at Subaru of America, says, "Another month of strong Crosstrek and Outback sales represents positive momentum as Subaru remains positioned for growth."

Poston confirms that another month of robust Crosstrek and Outback sales is a clear sign of Subaru's upward trajectory.

The Outback is a no-slow. It's not slowing down before it gets a remodel.

Outback stays hot.

The popular Outback is second in July sales for Subaru of America (SOA), not far from the Crosstrek. SOA delivered 14,204 midsize SUVs to U.S. customers. 14,204 Outback midsize SUVs were sold to customers in July, compared with 12,430 in July 2023. That's a 14.3 percent increase.

The popular Outback now has 95,907 models delivered through seven months in 2024 compared with 93,833 in 2023, a 2.2 percent increase. Even with the excellent showing in July, the Outback is still in second place in sales behind the Forester.

Are there 2024 Outback models still available?

The 2025 Outback has arrived, but Subaru still has some 2024 Outback models to sell. Subaru is offering customers 0% for 36 months of financing through September 3, 2024, to encourage sales. This special financing offer is part of Subaru's strategy to transition to the new model year and does not reflect the Outback's sales performance.

If you can't find a 2024 Outback, the 2025 Outback is a carry-over with few changes. Read my 2025 Outback model guide report here

Pricing stays the same, almost.

For the 2025 model year, the Outback comes in nine trim levels. The Base is priced at $30,290, Premium ($32,590), Onyx Edition ($37,500), Limited ($39,250), Touring ($41,740), Onyx Edition XT ($40,755), Wilderness ($41,355), Limited XT ($41,590), and Touring XT ($44,190). In addition, destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,395).

How much did the 2025 Outback price increase?

Only one trim level increased in price. The Outback Limited increased +$2,160. A power moonroof, DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, navigation, and a 360-degree heated steering wheel are now standard on Limited trims.

There's more Outback news.

If you want the next-generation Outback, wait another year. It has yet to be officially announced by Subaru of America, but the 2026 Outback is expected to get a complete remodel from the ground up. Read my next-gen Outback report here

There's still more.

I reported last week that significant changes are coming soon in Outback production.

Subaru Corporation is moving the popular Outback midsize SUV manufacturing away from the U.S. and back to Japan. This decision is part of Subaru's global manufacturing strategy and is aimed at improving production efficiency and quality.

The Outback will also undergo significant changes in 2025 and 2026. The midsize 2-Row SUV will receive a complete redesign for the 2025 model year, with updates to its design, features, and performance.

I reported last September that the Outback production could move from Lafayette, Indiana, to Gunma, Japan. Read my new report here.

Now it's looking more and more likely.

The Outback will get "A full redesign of the midsize crossover is expected in 2025, when production is expected to move to Japan from Indiana, with a reengineering in 2026 to add an optional hybrid powertrain," says Automotive News.

A new Outback Hybrid is coming for U.S. customers.

The Outback, built in Japan after 2025, will get a new hybrid powertrain. Subaru Corporation will get the Outback hybrid technology from Toyota, and the new trim level will be introduced after the Forester Hybrid arrives next year.

If you want an American-made Outback, the time is getting short. Check out my report on why the Outback production is shifting to Japan.

If you wait a year, you can get the next-generation Outback, and the Outback Hybrid will follow shortly after. Stay tuned.
