Subaru says they will release the full Isle of Man TT Course record run in the 2016 WRX STI next week. Here’s a teaser of what to expect before the official full-length run is out. Scroll down to see the new teaser video below.
Mark Higgins shattered his own record from 2014 and he did in the purpose-built 2016 Subaru WRX STI built by Provide and Subaru Tecnica International. Higgins was ready to break the mark he set in a fairly stock 2015 STI with street tires. This STI was far from stock.
Prodrive and STI built the WRX STI for one purpose
The new 2016 Subaru WRX STI Time Attack is anything but stock. It received a new 2.0-liter turbo engine, chassis upgrades and aerodynamic enhancements. The 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer engine shares a lot of internals with the GRC race cars. The Time Attack 2.0-liter has a rev limit of 8500 vs 6500 rpm for the GRC engine.
Power output is believed to be around 600hp and 400 lb. ft of torque. With a curb weight less than 1200kg, Prodrive says the TT car has a comparable power-to-weight ratio to a GT3 race car. The Time Attack STI uses a paddle-shift gearbox carried over from the World Rally Car. The gears have been changed to produce a higher top speed, now estimated at 180mph. They also are modified for durability at the higher speeds and temperatures.
