What would be better than a new 2024 Subaru WRX hatchback body style? A new WRX hatch with Outback Wilderness upgrades to go deep off-road. That’s what Subaru Corporation just teased, but it’s only for Japanese customers and will not be available in the U.S. market.
The Japanese-specification 2024 Subaru WRX hatchback Levorg gets new upgrades to make it an off-road warrior. The WRX Sportwagon gets rugged looks and possibly an off-road-tuned chassis, but unfortunately, it’s not for North America.
Subaru Corporation in Japan has released teaser images of its new upcoming 2024 Subaru Levorg Layback for the Japanese market that previews a higher-riding (more ground clearance) and outdoor-themed version of the Subaru WRX Sportswagon sold in Japan and Australia.

While the new Layback WRX would be an appealing new model for Subaru of America’s all-wheel-drive lineup, don’t look for the Wilderness-themed WRX to be sold outside Japan. It’s only for Japanese customers.
“Currently, there are no plans for this model for Australia, as it is exclusively for the Japanese market, but we will be keeping a vigilant eye on future developments,” a spokesperson told CarSales in Australia.
The teaser images here show that the Levorg Layback will feature a new front facia and bumper, a wider grille, and a new aluminum-style crossbar that runs between the LED headlights.

Revised intakes and new alloy wheels have also been introduced. Still, the most significant change is the increase in ride height and new WRX-style black plastic wheel-arch cladding indicating additional scratch protection when going off-road.
Inside the cabin, the teaser image reveals that the new WRX Layback will come with two-tone leather seats with gold stitching throughout. As is typical of Subaru, no additional details were released.
The 2024 WRX Layback will come with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive, mated with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine in Japan and Lineartronic CVT transmission.
Could the additional ground clearance trigger an overhaul of the WRX Sportswagon chassis with a longer-travel suspension that improves the ride over rough terrain? Stay tuned.

Long time Subaru customer…

Long time Subaru customer here... until the Solterra wheels-off debacle. I'm loving my electric MINI Cooper, but I still have an Outback (which drives like an old lady's puff cushion ride). The more Subaru teases desirable models not for the US market (I'm still waiting for my boxer diesel Forester), the more likely I'll entirely cease being a Subaru customer.
