Subaru’s Hybrid And Electric Vehicle Production Is One Year Away

Subaru Corporation is ramping up its hybrid and electric vehicle production. It's now one year away. Here is how it affects U.S. customers.

When will Subaru build and launch its own new hybrid and electric vehicles? Subaru Corporation announced that its Saitama manufacturing plant (formerly an industrial product manufacturing facility) is now a dedicated facility that will be used for the production of transmissions for the next generation of Hybrid and EV models, which will be produced starting in 2025.

The change reflects Subaru Corporation's ramp-up of designing, developing, and manufacturing its brand of hybrid and electric vehicles and not relying on Toyota. The new electric Subaru models will fall organizationally under the Gunma, Japan plant.

What does the change mean for Subaru customers?

As I wrote in a previous story, until now, Subaru was seen as slow in shifting to electric vehicles. They have one EV, the 2023 Solterra compact SUV, a collaboration with Toyota, built at Toyota’s factory in Japan.

But everything changed last year as the global shift to EV took place.

Subaru will still cooperate with Toyota on the "several" new EVs coming by 2025, but they will be built in-house at Subaru's Gunma plant in Japan and not manufactured by Toyota like the Solterra.

Tomoaki Emori, Subaru's senior corporate planning division vice president, said the Japanese automaker will ramp up its electrified offerings in the critical U.S. market to include "several" new battery EVs by 2025.

"When we look at the U.S. market situation, which accounts for 75 percent of our total sales, we will need to offer several models in our EV lineup," he said. "We have shifted our weight toward that in our development."

Subaru Corporation will begin making its new electric vehicles in mixed production with internal combustion vehicles at its Yajima plant in Japan by the mid-2020s. From about 2027, Subaru will build a dedicated EV factory on the site of its Oizumi plant, which now makes engines and transmissions.

Several new Hybrid and electric models are coming for U.S. customers.

Subaru says "several" new electric vehicles are coming to U.S. customers by 2025. I reported that one will be a Forester Hybrid compact SUV. The next-generation Outback will likely be another hybrid model along with the Crosstrek subcompact SUV. The top-selling models are the most likely models to get electrification first. Subaru's new hybrid and electric models are one year away. Stay tuned.

I've owned several subs since 1981. My current ride is a 2019 Outback 2.5 limited that I bought new. I moved from a BMW 328i sport wagon which I loved.

But the Outback is most versatile and reliable I've owned yet. With the proper tires, its at home on remote desert roads and Interstate highway.

I am waiting for an Outback hybrid before I trade this one in, hopefully 2025
