A Surprising Number Of Subaru Owners Say No To An All-New Forester Hybrid

In a recent poll of Subaru Forester owners, they were asked if they would buy a new Forester hybrid trim level. See how many said no to a new plug-in hybrid model.

Suppose Subaru of America offered a new Subaru Forester with plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, 300 horsepower, and 42 miles of all-electric range (like the Toyota RAV4 Prime). Are you interested if you were shopping for a new compact SUV? That's what John Goreham asked current owners of the Forester in a recent poll.

A surprising number of Forest owners said no. Only 36 percent said they would be interested in a plug-in hybrid Forester. And 44 percent said no, they would most likely not buy a new Forester PHEV.

2023 Subaru Forester

Only 3 percent of Forester owners said they would be interested in a Forester PHEV if its price were within $10,000 of the top-of-the-line Forester Touring trim level.

Will Forester get a hybrid trim level?

The Forester compact SUV gets a complete remodel from the ground up in 2024 if there are no delays. The Forester could be the next model in the lineup to get hybrid technology which would spur new interest in the Forester. However, the owner poll reveals there is not enough interest yet.

Subaru Forester

Subaru recently announced new hybrid models are coming by 2025, so a new Forester Hybrid may be only two years away from launching in North America for Subaru of America's customers.

Subaru Corporation recently announced that 40 percent of its global sales will have some form of electric power by mid-2025 to 2030. The Japanese automaker has set a target to "sell only electric vehicles" worldwide by the first half of the 2030s.

Subaru's upcoming new hybrid vehicles will use Toyota's technology and manufactured at its Gunma plant in Japan. The manufacturing facility currently makes the 2023 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, and BRZ for U.S. customers.

Subaru offers a Forester hybrid, but not in the U.S.

A recent Automotive News report says, "it gives an idea of what nameplates might be in line for electrification." The 2023 Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy are manufactured in the U.S. plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

A new next-generation Subaru Forester hybrid trim level is coming. It's a matter of when it will launch in North America. Would you buy the Forester compact SUV electric Plug-In Hybrid if Subaru of America offered the fuel-stingy trim? Let Subaru of America know in the comment section below, and we'll pass them along to the Camden, N.J. automaker.

i have a 2019 Forester Sport. Next year i will be ready to look at new vehicles…I want plug in or regular hybrid and a Forester. The space and ride sold me.

I LOVED my Forester, but I didn’t buy another because I wanted a PHEV.
I am waiting for Subaru to come out with a Forester PHEV.

I am very interested in a PHEV Forester. I am retired and I do travel to visit family members. I am not interested in traveling with an EV until they can extend the milage range. I currently am on my second Forester. It's a 2019 Touring and I love this SUV.

We own two Foresters, and do not want to change models or brands. We would very much like to trade up to a hybrid Forester, but are becoming fatigued by the wait. We're considering a 2023 Toyota Highlander hybrid, but only because a Forester in hybrid format is unavailable. It seems to us that Subaru is missing the boat on this, and we really hope that Subaru accelerates their hybrid manufacturing schedule.

I have been hanging onto my old Forester in the hopes that a hybrid version would come out. Not interested in plug in, but definitely think hybrid is overdue. Hope they announce soon! Otherwise, I'm considering moving over to the CRV or RAV4...

I am very interested in a non-plug in hybrid Forrester or possibly an Outback.
I WOULD NEVER BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID.

Susan Thonpson (not verified)    July 11, 2023 - 6:13PM

I'd buy a plug-in hybrid Forester in a heartbeat. Currently I mostly drive my Prius Prime PHEV, averaging 200-600 mpg each year because so much of my driving is around town. Range for long trips is over 600 miles. I keep my 2009 Forester around for hauling big stuff and the rare, really tough snow day. Would LOVE to down-size to just one, plug-in hybrid, vehicle.

I don't think most people currently understand the advantages of a plug-in hybrid. Incredible reduction in fuel consumption because most trips are local, 1/10 or less of the battery size of EV's (much easier on earth's resources until better battery technology evolves), and a full range double or more than a Tesla. I use so little gas and oil in the Prius Prime it's laughable. The MPeG is 133; best on the market. There's room for both, but an obsession with going all EV right now is an example of "perfection" (EV's) being the enemy of "really, really good" (PHEV's). I know my Prius Prime, as I drive it, is easier on the environment than most or all EV's being sold out there right now.

Yes a hybrid or PHEV. We went looking for it one 2021 and was disappointed that Subaru had more or less given up on being "environmental friendly company" by having not a single hybrid, PHEV or EV available that year. So instead we got the CR-V Hybrid Touring (about same price as the Forester Limited) and we love it. Next year we will need a second car - and the Honda Prologue EV AWD is coming out.

I’ve been waiting for forever for a hybrid Forester. I have a 2014 hybrid Crosstrek, but I need the extra room to haul my dogs around. I plan to trade my Crosstrek in when the Forester is released.

Richard Knipe (not verified)    July 25, 2023 - 7:04PM

I am I the market for a Subaru Forester plug-in hybrid, but disappointed with how long it is taking for it to be manufactured. I am afraid I can’t wait until 2025 or later, so I will shop elsewhere.

Bob (not verified)    September 9, 2023 - 10:51AM

I would buy a full hybrid Subaru Forester but NOT a plug in hybrid as I now live in a retirement community and have NO way to plug one in each night and the community chrges extra for any plug ins! I would love the new Forester to be similar the a Toyota RAV4 in design. Also, I want the Forester line to come in the light blue Kakhi color of the Crosstrek as well as the Sable Brown of my 2019!

David (not verified)    September 14, 2023 - 8:40AM

I have a 2019 Subaru Outback and my next car will be a regular or plug-in hybrid. Gas prices and the need to address climate change will dictate that change. I live in a jurisdiction with a poor charging network so fukll electric is not a choice I am preparted to make for the foreseeable future.

Sure, a phev Forester would be great, but only if the price penalty can be brought down to the $5K range, $10k is simply too much.

Margaret Munhall (not verified)    September 18, 2023 - 12:32AM

I would definitely purchase a new Subaru Forester hybrid if it was available in So Cal at a reasonable price, say below $45K. I currently have a 2016 Subaru Forester that I love!!!!

Marcia Krantz (not verified)    September 27, 2023 - 1:20AM

Definitely interested in a Forester hybrid, especially if that means it is not totally dependent on electric power, but is self sustaining and can have a gas option. Car should recharge itself as it motors along. A definite plus.

Randy Huntington (not verified)    October 17, 2023 - 7:15AM

On my 12th Subaru! Just waiting for that Forester Hybrid to come out as I have a Rav 4 hybrid I love. 46 plus miles per gallon!

Sharon (not verified)    October 27, 2023 - 10:12AM

Yes I would be interested
In seeing a hybrid Forrester model
But the repairs/ replacement battery have to within reason money wise or it’s mute.
People are strapped financially

Dwaine (not verified)    November 5, 2023 - 6:13PM

I would seriously look at buying a Suburu Forester PHEV if priced reasonably. I want a PHEV and I prefer a Suburu Forester for the safety features that it has (better than what comes with a Toyota in base models) and for the better ride than a RAV.

I love my 2018 Forester and we have been all over the Nat'l Parks with it. I will be in the market for a new car in the next 1 - 2 years (i have to have a valuable car to trade in as I don't believe in car markets as high as my rent used to be!). However, being in CA and caring about the environment, it makes no sense to buy a car in 2024 that is NOT at least a plug in hybrid or some sort of Hybrid. I am so sad that Subaru missed that boat. Add to that that all cars are so expensive these days and Subaru only has the Crosstrek (too small) or a full EV (Solterra) which almost made us faint when we saw the price. I don't know what all the car makers are thinking but those are NOT Mainstream prices that normal families can afford!!! I truly think a hybrid Forester would sell like hotcakes out here if the Rav4 is any indication. I think Subaru put their eggs in the wrong basket and will lose a lot of business. They had a few years to copy the Rav4 tech into the Forester and get it to market. I was told 2023, then 2024. Well, I can't wait much longer. Like others, I will probably have to buy a Toyota Rav4. It sucks because I love my Forester aside from it being an ICE, and wanted to stay with Subaru. Toyota has the Rav4 Hybrid AND the Cross as a non plug in hybrid, both with awd option. Definetly also expensive but at least available and by then also with some reliability data. (being a 'guinea pig' buyer for a first generation of something is another one of my concerns. A friend a lot of issues with her Crosstrek hybrid a few years ago). Sad in Long Beach, ...

John Howard (not verified)    November 24, 2023 - 3:11PM

I am a happy owner of a 2017 Forester; comfortable drive, very dependable in Vermont snow, GREAT all-around visibility (better than the Rav4), and reasonable gas mileage. I am excited to hear that Subaru will (belatedly) offer a 2025 HYBRID option to the US market. But I am cautious -- will likely wait for the 2026 model to see if any "first year kinks" will need to be worked out. And let's hope it is REASONABLY priced!!!

i have driven subarus since 1981. Paying California gas prices, I am extremely attracted to the Toyota RAV4 economy, but what I would be far more interested in is a Forester that employs the RAV4 hybrid powertrain; a forester with the same or improved power and 40+ MPG . keep the 18 gallon fuel tank. 👍🏼

We have been driving Subarus since 2001, as have most of our immediate families.
The next SUV we buy will be a plug in hybrid, so if Subaru wants to be in the running, they better introduce one.
