A Number of Tesla Customers Who No Longer Want to Take Delivery of Their Cybertruck Start a Petition to Get Their Non-Refundable $1000 Deposit Back

A Change.org petition calls on Tesla to refund people who no longer want to take delivery of a Foundation Series Cybertruck their non-refundable $1000 deposit. The issue has come to the forefront as people wait for the regular Cybertruck variant.

Prospective Cybertruck owners who do not want to spend the extra $20,000 to purchase a Foundation Series Cybertruck have started a petition calling on Tesla to refund their non-refundable $1000 deposit.

The petition was started by Dennis CW, a YouTuber who reported on the issue a few days ago. In his initial video, Dennis showed several individuals with a Cybertruck pending order being forced to either take delivery or lose their $1000 deposit.

Dennis highlighted several individuals who had posted online showing the communication they had received from Tesla.

As mentioned already, Tesla is giving these individuals a few days to either take delivery of their Foundation Series Cybertruck or have their Cybertruck order deemed canceled. In that case they will be forced to forfeit their $1000 deposit.

Note that the $1000 order fee differs from the refundable $100 reservation fee, which was later increased to $250.

You pay a refundable $250 fee to get on the reservation queue; however, you pay a non-refundable $1000 to convert your reservation to a binding order.

After placing the binding order, if you choose to delay your delivery, Tesla allows you to put your order on hold for some time.

Knowing this fact, people have been putting their Cybertruck on hold until the non-Foundation Series Cybertruck becomes available.

There are reports of some individuals who have put their Cybertruck delivery on hold for several months without any issue; however, in the last week, Tesla has issued a wave of warnings before canceling the order and taking the $1000.

This brings us back to Dennis’s petition. The YouTuber posted his petition on Change.org titled “STOP Tesla From Taking Non-Refundable $1,000 Deposits on CYBERTRUCKS.”

Dennis explains his petition by writing…

“Tesla is canceling Foundation Series Cybertruck orders and forcing people who ordered a Foundation Series Cybertruck to take delivery or lose their $1,000 deposit.

In November 2023, Tesla started taking $1,000 deposits for a Foundation Series Cybertruck. Plenty of people put a $1,000 deposit thinking they would get a non-Foundation Series Cybertruck.

Our petition is for TESLA to:

#1 Allow those people who put a $1,000 deposit in line to get a non-Foundation Series Cybertruck.

#2 OR convert to another Tesla Model delivery

#3 OR convert to Tesla Cash.”

Six days after going live, the petition has amassed 118 signatures, with the next goal of reaching 200 signatories.

A link to the petition was also posted on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum online, and the prevailing sentiment on the pro-Tesla site appears to be that if a person did not want the Foundation Series Cybertruck, then he/she shouldn’t have converted their reservation to a binding order.

Several individuals pointed out that the order page specifically pointed to the Foundation Series Cybertruck before entering into the contract and advised the individuals to eat up the $1000 loss.

On the other hand, some people advised the prospective Cybertruck owners to purchase the Foundation Series variant since adding all the options it would not be much more expensive than the regular Cybertruck variant.

Another thing to note here: from a strictly legal perspective, these individuals don’t appear to have any legal recourse to force Tesla to give them the $1000 back.

However, as Dennis said, it will be in good faith for Tesla to allow these individuals to at least change their Foundation Series order to a non-Foundation Series variant.

Also, the wave of last-minute warnings to take delivery of Foundation Series Cybertruck suggests that Tesla is close to launching the regular Cybertruck variant which will start at $79,900 and qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax rebate.

At least this is a positive note, and we’ll keep you posted when Tesla starts selling the first non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks; however, until then let me know what you think about the owners’ attempts to get their $1000 back.

This is just stupid . I could see if it were for the reservation deposit. But this is the non-refundable deposit that you chose to put down to order a Cybertruck foundation series AFTER knowing the details. And it was clearly outlined. I agree that any deposits prior to the announcement of details should be refundable (and they are)

I'm siding with Tesla on this one. The contract is clear that the deposit is nonrefundable. Either proceed to take delivery or lose the deposit
