Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says He’ll Be Driving His Escalade The Rest of Winter to Avoid Salt on the Road from Rusting His Truck

Several Cybertruck owners express their fear about how the salt on the roads will affect their trucks. One Cybertruck owner from Michigan says to protect his truck from rusting, he’ll be driving his Cadilac Escalade for the rest of winter.

For most Cybertruck owners, this is the first winter they will experience after buying their truck, and they appear worried.

Some Cybertruck owners have the usual concerns about the performance of EVs in the cold; however, others are worried about how the salt on the road will affect their trucks.

A Tesla Cybertruck owner from Michigan, Jacob, says he so worried about the salt on the road corroding his truck that he has decided to not drive it the rest of winter.

Jacob shared his concern on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.

Here is what he wrote…

“It just started to snow here in Michigan, and with that comes SALT! I think I'm going to drive my old Cadilac Escalade while they are salting the roads this winter.”

This is certainly a surprising statement to hear from a Cybertruck owner, especially given that Tesla and Elon Musk have touted the Cybertruck as an apocalypse-proof vehicle.

I guess there won’t be anyone to salt the streets during an apocalypse?

Continuing his post, Jacob says he is not entirely certain that the salt will corrode his Cybertruck, but he still believes it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Here is what he wrote…

Now I doubt that the salt will rust holes in the Cybertruck stainless steel but tarnish it maybe? Maybe it can be buffed out in the spring with Bar Keepers Friend? Then there is the galvanic corrosion that occurs between aluminum and stainless. I'm sure that the engineers at Tesla took that into consideration but how well? Anyway, just wanted to see what other members on Cybertruck Owners Club think about it.”

Looking at the comments, more Cybertruck owners shared their fear that the winter salt might rust their trucks.

A Cybertruck owner from Boston, Massachusetts, Koolio, writes…

“I'm curious about this salt/erosion as well. I'd be truly shocked if it gets ruined over several winters.

That said, I spoke with a local detailer / PPF installer who specializes in Cybertrucks. The owner owns one as well, and when I called inquiring about corrosion or staining, they said they did see some last winter and that they couldn't fully get the stains out.

Another Cybertruck owner from Illinois, who goes by the username Mongo on the forum, seconds this sentiment writing…

“Yep, Michigan here also. Salt in winter, and calcium chloride in summer (dirt roads at least). We run the Cybertruck through an automatic car wash now and then. The most bathed vehicle I've ever had.”

Overall, it’s surprising to see that Cybertruck owners are afraid to drive their trucks during winter. Please let me know what you think in the comments. I was a salt spreader salesman in my 20's and 30's, the best salt spreaders are made from stainless steel. They will not corrode or rust, but do cost a bit more than painted metal spreaders. Look at the Highway Department yards, many spreaders are not painted, those are stainless steel.

That's so sad maybe you will stop buying anything and start actually doing your research certain cars and trucks are not made for the winter and if you a Michigander you will know that winter is brutal so you just about basically wasted your money, time, and energy on a Tesla cybertruck.

I understand your concerns about the salt and everything, but it seems to me.
That's one of the reasons I own trucks is 44 wheel drive.Cause I live in michigan the roads get pretty nasty. Now I don't own a cybertruck. My opinion on EV's is the battery technology is just not there yet. Seems like a waste of money. Especially to pay a $100000 for a truck. You can't even drive in the winter. And from all the bad things I've heard about these trucks with The Frames. Snapping them shutting down other guys, having problems with their air suspension, just from putting things in the bed of their truck.Doesn't seem like it's much of a truck to be honest with you and I know all you cybertruck. Owners are gonna disagree, but it seems like a big gimmick. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I think they're ugly and really, I think people buy them just because they wanna be looked at cause, as far as functionality goes everything I've seen and read about them, it's nothing but problems.
The last thing that I can say is I can't believe people will pay a $100000 for a vehicle that breaks down all the time. Doesn't do what a truck is supposed to do. It's put together with duct tape and washers, self tapping screws you can't even shut the door hard without pulling the inner panel off opening the doors afterwards.
And then those indestructible windows that are not so indestructible i don't know just my opinion and everyone's entitled to buy what they like. I just think the truck was supposed to be something special. And all i've seen it be is nothing but a huge headache to most owners.

Musk is just a more successful grifter than his BFF Trump. 100k truck one is afraid to drive in snow was an awesome grift for the Bro Generation. Obviously designed by a Bro.

If you live in a place with a harsh weather environment and still purchase a vehicle with questionable operating characteristics in those conditions, you didn't make a well thought-out decision to begin with, you made an emotional one.
Those are the types of automotive purchasing decisions that usually don't pan out too well because you bought a toy instead of something with far more utility.
Not a criticism, more of an observation. Car guys do this all the time, I know I have.

Might as well call them and Barbie dream boat truck.Oh I don't want to get this Overpriced indestructible truck dirty. And of course it would survive an apocalypse because all the power plants would be shutdown where would you charge it unless you put an exercise bike and a solar panel with a wind turbine attached also and maybe you could run the wipers.

More likely driving his Escalade for winter to avoid been frozen solid and stranded as they all freeze up in -35 - 45 below. Elon Musk forgot to factor that in. Lol

Steel rusts..
Aluminum corrodes but forms a protective coating that stops corrosion.
No one has shown any photos of stainless rusting except for particles on the surface

Oh. So sorry for your rusted toaster. Those trucks remind me of the folks who don’t look in the mirror when they leave the house. Or don’t care. The ugliest things on the road. Glad you’re leaving it at home hidden from view. Yikes. 🤣🤣

What a pathetic excuse for a vehicle, let alone a "truck" that can't handle a (Midwestern) Winter! Put a small lift on a Toyota Prius, and it will get you through comfortably, reliably, and extremely efficiently.. Oh that's right, Toyota employs some of the best engineers in the universe, and then test and refine the product over iterations to produce vehicles that tend to defy even logical expectations regard to their reliability and efficiency. But have fun polishing your overpriced monstrosity that apparently can be bricked by using it in inclimate, i.e. normal weather conditions... i guess if you've got $100k to blow on an false ego boost- go for it! 😆 🤣 LMFAO 🤓😅

That's an awful lot to spend on a truck and then not be able to drive it. I can understand feeling that way about a classic vehicle 50 or 60 years old, A cyber truck not so much.

I own a low mile 2004 Titan that's been garaged and babied it's entire life. It's not garaged anymore.

So for $25 a month, (with my military discount) I run that through a car wash is often as I want. Our roads in Idaho aren't salted as aggressively as the roads back east and in the Midwest, but I have no problem running this thing through the car wash once or twice a week, at least, and keeping it nice and clean.

Not only does it keep my old truck nice, It's a lot easier to keep it clean than it is to bring it back from being not so clean.

If you buy a super expensive vehicle, and don't want to drive it because of winter and salt and whatever other reasons, that doesn't sound like such a great deal to me.

I'd also like to mention that I saw a Lamborghini up in Sun Valley Idaho a few winters ago, and the roads were all snow packed and covered.

Personally I'd prefer a car with a little bit more ground clearance in the snow, but props to this guy for buying a super expensive car and driving it no matter what the weather was.

These people are idiots. Sure, let me drive my steel truck through the winter on salty roads because that's worked out so well for the last 100 years.😑

Dr.Z~ (not verified)    December 8, 2024 - 7:29PM

Apparently my previous comment about a 'truck' that couldn't drive in winter was too saucy for the censors, so I'll just leave Exhibit A here for Ones' perusal and consideration.. ,~)

It's a Toyota Taco with 1.625 Million Miles on it..

The truck has absolutely none, zero off road capabilities, you can't drive it through water puddles, mud puddles and owners are afraid to drive it in snow. Not even to mention the fact that they are horrible in the snow as well. Y'all paid $100k+ for a1980's paperweight that can only be driven on sunny days for about 250 miles and have the audacity to be worried about corrosion. That's the equivalent of someone sitting on a casting couch and complaining about a stain.

Listen to this rich privalage. "I'm going to drive my other 100k vehicle because my Telsa will rust!"

Fuking douch bags!

Unless they come with wheel house heaters... The charging port will be covered within caked up ice... It's in the spray zone, perhaps the worst charging port ever!

Why do you repeat over and over the same information in your article?
Its annoying and lacks any original thought. Also I suggest you wrote a fake story and your quote is false. It reeks of bullsh*t. Behind the scenes I can see a tale becoming real life.
