Tesla FSD 12.4, Coming In Hot With No Steering Wheel Nag! And Sooner Than Expected: Elon Musk Shares Extreme Edge Cases Being Tested

Tesla's FSD, version 12.4, is coming in hot. Elon Musk also shared about some extreme edge cases being tested.

Tesla FSD Version 12.4 Coming In Hot

I recently wrote about Tesla's FSD blowing your mind with robotaxis launching in China, and I predicted that version 12.4 would come in about a month. Well, it appears it is "coming in hot" and may be coming sooner than that - as soon as next week, according to Elon Musk. Version 12.4 is a step change improvement from the 12.3.* versions.

Elon Musk has talked about version 12.4 already, and it's improvement over prior versions, and that version 12.5 is an even bigger improvement over that. He hasn't mentioned anything specifically about 12.6 yet, but I think we'll see that being an even bigger improvement over the prior versions still.

Why does any of this matter? It matters because we are seeing rapid releases of FSD versions, and it hasn't slowed down. Releases are starting to get predictable, about every 8 to 10 days, and we seem to be getting a major version update, much sooner than anticipated.

This gives proof that Tesla's FSD progress is accelerating and improving quickly. I truly believe now that we will see driverless Tesla vehicles before the end of the year. It may not quite seem like it now, but we are going to have a version 13 of the software before the end of the year at the current pace of releases.

Elon Musk shared the following information via a Tweet and there's a lot to unpack here. Here is what he said:

12.4 has almost completely retrained models. The final touches are for comfort, as it sometimes accelerates or brakes too fast for most people’s taste.

12.5 and 12.6 are in various stages of testing. We’re getting into rare, complex situations, for example: going down a narrow, one-way road, encountering a road closure and having to reverse out to find a new route.

That closure also needs to be communicated to the rest of the fleet, so you don’t get a whole bunch of Teslas stuck down a road :)

12.4 should show some major improvements and hopefully minimal regression. What is interesting to me is that complex situations and major edge cases that are now being looked at.

Going down a narrow, one-way road, having a closure, and having to reverse out of that is a major maneuver that would be challenging even for a skilled human driver. If FSD can get that right, that will truly be impressive.

Not only that, having these types of construction issues and road closures communicated to the entire Tesla fleet will ensure that it doesn't happen to too many Tesla vehicles, making most robotaxi rides as efficient as possible.

Even more exciting about version 12.4 is that the steering wheel nag will be gone! All that is left is to pay attention to the road without getting nagged. That will be nice!

Version 12.5 and 12.6 Coming Sooner Too, I Think

The next major versions after 12.3.6 are 12.4, which Elon Musk said could release as soon as next week, and 12.5 and 12.6. Elon has not mentioned any versions after that, such as 12.7, so there is a possibility that after 12.6, we will see version 13. And version 13 will be when we start to see the first driverless Tesla vehicles, in my opinion.

The end-to-end neural net training and gathering data from a larger range of vehicles is what is making this possible. Elon Musk has said that the limitation is no longer compute for training purposes. It is getting data that shows an error or disengagement or improper maneuver.

Then, there are things like comfort that will be addressed, such as heavy braking, aggressive acceleration, and things like that. The car can do a better job at using regenerative braking the whole time instead of brakes as well as making stops and goes a much smoother transition.

I expect we will see comfort improvements, more edge cases solved, as well as navigation issues being fixed in future versions this year. The car should also do better at navigating around pot holes - at least, that is my hope.

My prediction, again, is driverless Tesla vehicles before the end of the year with a version 13 of FSD. With so many millions of vehicles on the road giving Tesla data, I think there's a good chance this will happen.

Once driverless Tesla vehicles start to hit the roads, it will be interesting to see the rollout of how that goes and what issues, if any, arise from that happening.

I have it. It's great. Not perfect but very useful and vastly improved. I have had it almost 2 years now. Robotaxi? I will have to see on 8/8 what they have in mind.
