Tesla Park Assist Without Ultrasonic Sensors

Tesla is bringing back park assist for vehicles without ultrasonic sensors. This comes with some added benefits in that the car will detect distance all around it where there are cameras instead of the front and back where the sensors used to be.

This is another showcase of Tesla reducing the complexity of its vehicles. I have a Model 3 RWD and I can clearly see the sensors on the front and back of my car. However, these sensors won't be needed now, and I will get a software updates that basically makes these sensors dead weight.

Tesla vision is the way to go, and you can see that Tesla is working to improve their vision system with upgrades to the cameras in their Hardware 4 setup. The cameras will continue to scale in quality, whereas the sensors won't improve over time.

The way that the park assist feature will work now is that Tesla will use its occupancy network from its neural net to predict high-definition outlines of objects 360 degrees around the car. I think this is a very cool feature.

Other Features Tesla Will Bring Back

What are some other features that Tesla will eventually bring back that were gone. Smart summon and summon are two of those features. The vehicle must be able to navigate a parking lot and use the occupancy network to make sure it doesn't run into anything.

These are the two features that Tesla will bring back with the fix to use its vision only occupancy network. Tesla saves money by removing the ultrasonic sensors. It's not a lot of money, but it is some, and it reduces complexity. Little improvements like this done regularly add up over time.

The ultrasonic sensors are cheap and use sound waves to reflect off objects and wait for it to reflect off things at the speed of sound. This is why you can see the distance in real time.

Munro Live estimates that they cost Tesla about $114. If you take that and some complexity it doesn't seem like much, but again, doing things like this over time adds up to thousands of dollars saved and increased production efficiency and less error.
