Jeep promised that the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe would start arriving at dealerships early next year and it appears that it will meet that goal. The new plug-in hybrid is already being built at the Toledo, Ohio Assembly plant that is home to the traditional Jeep Wranglers. The New Jeep Wrangler Plug-in Hybrid is designed to get up to 25 miles of pure electric range then it will switch over to gasoline power for a total range of up to 400 miles. The new Jeep Wrangler 4xe just won an award for being the Green SUV of the Year for 2020.
2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Being Built Alongside Gasoline Models
The plan to build the plug-in hybrids at the Wrangler plant is unusual because most of the other automakers build their electric vehicles in dedicated electric vehicle facilities. Jeep is integrating building the new 4xe into the regular assembly line. The groundbreaking plug-in hybrid will be built by the 3200 employees at the Toledo North facility. Dealing with the 400-volt, 17-kWh battery pack can require some special training. The battery pack fits beneath the back seat.
Jeep Promising True Jeep Performance
The 2021 Wrangler 4xe promises 375 horsepower and goes from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. Wrangler 4xe’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combines with two electric motors to deliver an estimated 50 MPGe. The 400-volt, 17-kWh battery is located underneath the second-row seat to protect it from outside elements and to preserve the interior space. 4xe is Jeep’s global name for its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology. Jeep is already marketing a Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe in Europe.
Having the vehicle able to seamlessly switch to a gasoline engine eliminates the concern about range anxiety. People who commute less than ten miles to work may never have to use the backup engine. The sophisticated system in the Wrangler 4xe allows the driver to choose if they wish to drive in the pure electric state or drive with the gasoline engine and save the electric energy for later.
Jeep Teaming Up With Amazon to Make The Switch to Electric Easier
Jeep is also teaming up with Amazon to make it easier to set up at-home charging. Amazon will help with setting up an online appointment with a licensed electrician to install the appropriate charging station.
According to Jeep, “Wrangler 4xe retains the Jeep Wrangler’s Trail Rated running gear: solid front and rear axles, full-time 4x4 two-speed transfer case, fully articulating suspension and 30 inches of water fording capability.” So, the 2021 Wrangler 4xe is a real Jeep in every way.
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe will be sold globally. It is due to arrive at dealerships in a matter of weeks. At this point, Jeep is not saying how many of the electric Jeep plug-in hybrids have been ordered.
