Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are hot about AC problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has many drivers hot under the collar because of continual problems with the truck’s air conditioning. There are multiple forums dedicated to the same issue. Some drivers had problems right after buying their pickups. Others are suffering with sweltering temperatures right now.

One forum I checked has 19 pages of complaints dedicated to the air conditioning issues. The last post, in September of 2016, pretty well sums up the frustration. This 2014 Silverado owner says he has had to take it in for repairs every three months. “This was my first new car to me. I was planning to buy one for my daughter, but not with this track record. I just had the AC fixed 2 months ago. Today, on the way home from work, the compressor seized and the belt broke. Now it's Friday, no service centers are open, and I live in the south so it is hot and I have no AC. I was planning to take the kids out on the boat, but I am not putting them in a hot truck with no AC. This may very well be the last Chevy I ever buy.”

This owner reported his problem, in late August of 2016. “So I have a 2014 Silverado crewcab. Last year during the height of summer with my kids in the truck my ac broke. I bought this thing new in June of 2014. So I take it in and it was a broken line. I was just a hair over the 36000 miles already in a year but the service guy took care of me. Well here we are now with the temps in the 100's in San Antonio 13 months after the ac was fixed, and it's broke again. I hate this truck.”

Other drivers are reporting similar issues. What appears to be the most upsetting is that the same issues keep reoccurring. The air conditioner suddenly starts blowing warm air. The owners say the repairs take time and never fix the problem for long. “Turns out the compressor and a
hose went out on it. Warranty took care of it but I was left without a vehicle for a few days and upset that practically a new vehicle was already having issues. Got my truck back and about 2 months later guess what? You guessed, the a/c went out again and another compressor went bad.”

A check of the website that monitors complaints about all vehicles, finds that there have been 11 formal complaints made about the ongoing problems with the air conditioning on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados.

One owner named Brad, from Little Rock, says a dealership finally levelled with him and told him what the real problem is. Brad says they told him “They have a design flaw in the metal part of the hose so we replace the hose and add a support bracket. I asked them why the 2016 models do not have the bracket and was told the a/c hose was redesigned for them and the new hose would not work on a 2014 model.” Brad is furious because he had to pay for the repair and General Motors will not reimburse him.

Another owner, from Texarkana, adds “Was told by the dealer that a bracket had broken and a hose came loose and it would be 550.00 dollars to fix. Time to change brands.”

There have not been any recalls issued for the hose and bracket problems, but it sounds like the issue is wide spread enough that dealers should be aware of the proper repairs. If you are having your AC repaired, It might help to point out all of the complaints and see if you can get it replaced under warranty, or if they will work with you on bringing down the price.

Just called the lawyer and wasn't able to get Jessica Thompson but left a message to say I would like to put my name down and would be happy to answer questions or provide information if there was to be a lawsuit filed against GM.

I also bought a brand new 2014 GMC Sierra that the AC has went out on. I have already spent several hundred dollars to re-charge the unit and for new hoses only to have it all leak out the first day after. I have since ordered a new condenser unit that has been on BACK ORDER for over 3 months and still no news on when it will ship. I will assume that this back order is due to the ongoing problems with this particular condenser and the overwhelming need for them due to their poor design. GM should definitely step up and take care of this obvious problem with this particular condenser unit. (But they won't) It's probably going to cost me close to $1,000 out of my pocket and I have have been without my truck for 3 months and still waiting.... I have been a loyal GM fan my whole life, but it might be time to start looking at other brands.....

Just went through 94+ weekend with no AC in my 2014 Silverado High Country. Seems no one in the area has the part needed to repair and they are back ordered on several. Sounds like a defective design to me!

Same issue here! Bought my GMC Sierra 1500 SLE pre-owned about a month ago with 44,000 miles on it. Two weeks ago, I brought it back to the dealer because I wasn't getting cold air out of the AC. It's condenser and they said it's on back order with no ETA. I've been researching this and some guys wait 2 - 3 weeks and others are going on to a month and a half with still no AC. I filed a formal complaint with GM and I have emailed several news outlets. Luckily I have the extended warranty so they covered it. Also made them replace my brakes and rotors for free. They gave me a loaner so I'm no sweating to death but man do I miss my truck. Fingers are crossed that they get the part somewhat soon. I am paying $500/month to drive around in a loaner GMC Terrain. Not happy....

Ordered a condenser for my 2014 Silverado in April from CARID when I discovered the condenser had a split in the top drivers side joint... after three notifications/delays I finally cancelled my order tonight.... they changed my expected delivery date to be August 30th.... at this point summer is pretty much over. This truck is paid off but will be my last Chevy. Back to Ford I go.

UPDATE******

Just spoke with GM and they confirmed that they are working with two suppliers and some of the new AC condensers have actually shipped to dealers. So that to me says that they're cranking them out but not at a heavy clip so yeah, might be a while before we all see ours get fixed but the ball has at least started rolling.

I am also a loyal chevy guy..and am pissed now reading all of these blogs. I also purchased the 2014 new in Aug 2013. I am sitting at 30 days since the part was ordered. As with everyone else I placed complaints to the dealership and GM customer service. I am in Tucson AZ which will average 100 degrees until the end of September. It is absolutely rediculous that GM has not fast tracked design-engineering to create a resolution. Last time I checked they are one of the largest manufacturers on the planet. I also thought that with the large truck segment and loyal buyers, GM would step up and create solutions. I am shocked that they have not released a statement for dealers to explain what action they are taking. When you spend $50k on the new truck...you haVE very high expectations. GM, you are losing good customers!!

I have a 2014 Silverado with the same condenser problem. The dealer wanted $1200.00 to replace. I went to an ASE certified shop and he had an after market condenser. Total replacement cost $800.00. The dealer's orders are on backorder for 60 days. I live in Houston. Another plus is I bought an extended warranty and am getting reimbursed by them for the $800.00. I have second thoughts about ever buying GM again.

Craig (not verified)    July 4, 2017 - 12:33PM

Hello Craig,

Thank you for following up with us. I certainly understand how stressful this situation is for you and I do apologize for the delay you're experiencing with parts. I can confirm the condenser is on national backorder. GM is working with two suppliers in order to alleviate this backlog for customers and are filling orders as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, there is no ETA for delivery at this time. If you'd like, we'd be glad to connect with your dealership just to make certain your part is ordered and formally document your concerns in our system. If this is of interest, feel free to send us your contact information, dealer name, and current mileage.

Been a month so far waiting for a new condenser, I agree that this may well be the last GM truck I own, my last truck was a 2012 GMC Sierra and had air conditioner problems and now my 2015 GMC Sierr, get it together GM!

Ken (not verified)    July 5, 2017 - 12:28AM

I just bought a 2014 Chevy Silverado with 24,000 miles on it. Within the first week the AC went out I took it back to the car lot the man had it fixed for me and now a week later it went out again. After reading all your blogs I am going to look into filing a complaint with GMC so that they will issue a recall. It looks like we should all do that

Fletcher Hammond (not verified)    July 5, 2017 - 10:38PM

Dang this all sounds just like my 2014 Denali. First the line leaked and now it only works when the outside temps are below 90 deg, and here in Vegas, in the summer its HOT ! The compressor works intermittently but not at all if the outside temp is above 100.

Matt (not verified)    July 6, 2017 - 12:00PM

Hello all, just got off the phone with a useless C/S at GM. Still no ETA on the part. Just to let you know if you filed a complaint it closes itself after 14 days. So, you have to go back and open another one that should keep GM busy while we suffer with no AC. If your part is on order it still closes itself after 14 days, so just keep calling or send an email all the same. And GM expects us to go back and buy another. You can't even trade this vehicle in, it is basically a no trade vehicle, who wants a vehicle with no air and no solution in sight.

I will begin by saying i am a Lifetime GM products person who comes from an entire GM family dating back to 1969. My father retired from GM and passed on soon after. I became the GMFamilyFirst administrator after he passed and have always promoted the GM products and encouraged my family members to buy GM. in fact i have often provided them with GM Employee Certificates that provide them a discount for their new purchases. After reading all of these stories and being personally affected with the same AC/Condenser issue on a fairly new GMC Sierra that i purchased new a couple of years ago i dont feel the same about GM and i am certainly having a hard time beleiving this has not been escalated to RECALL as of yet. If GM does not correct this proiblem, i will be looking at other brands going forward for my self, my wife and entire family. My truck is still under warranty and i was pretty much told to wait as long as it takes or i can fix it my self... I never thought i would hear that coming from a dealership or from GM. last, i would like to note that it has been well over 100 degrees every day for a while here at home so kids can't ride with dad till this is resolved. Shame on you GM!

james pinyon (not verified)    July 9, 2017 - 3:05AM

I have the same ac problem. I have a 21014 Silverado with only 18000 miles. While under warranty the ac started blowing hot air. They said they replaced a hose that was leaking. Now a few latter the same thing is happening. I took it in to the dealer and they said it had a leak. They put in a dye and Freon and said drive it for two weeks and bring it back to see where the leak is. They charger me $90 for that temporary fix. This should be a recall item. Time to get another make of truck. How is ford doing now? Only 18000 miles on it now and the first time there was under 10000 miles.

Eddy Hall (not verified)    July 10, 2017 - 8:14AM

I bought my silverado in July of 2014. It has been in and out of the shop aboiut 4 times because of the AC. GM dealers have not been able to fix or find the problem yet. Chevy and GM would only send me a free oil change and a apology.

Eddy Hall (not verified)    July 10, 2017 - 8:19AM

I forgot to say in my last comment that on my 2014 Silverado the ac has been blowing hot air and I've spent over $600.00 and after changing the hose it still leaks. I am through with GM.

Just got off the phone with GM, they now tell me that there is an open recall with the steering assist. Now get this, when they figure out how to fix it they will let us know. They have no clue but they say it is safe to drive, reallllllllllllly.
I would suggest calling GM and ask about this open recall, I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 LT.

Karl (not verified)    July 10, 2017 - 2:35PM

2014 Chevrolet Silverado, 67000km. A/C compressor seized and smoked the a/c clutch and belt while wife driving. Cost me three whole lost days use of the truck and over a week to get an appointment with the local GMC garage.
$1100.00 out of my pocket for a new compressor, parts and labour.

Not impressed.

Karl, More good news, GM now has a recall with no ETA on fixing it and no known REMEDY. Put your vin number into GM recall section on their site. It is called loss of steering assist where the electronics go out for a few seconds then return at slower speeds causing no power steering or as they call it power assist. And get this if you were planning on trading it in with some loyalty assist from GM, that won't happen either their policy is if there is an open recall they won't help you. Here is the recall info from GM's site. GM Recall #:

Talk about having another SAFETY ISSUE with steering, perhaps NASA can help them out.

I bought this 2014 Silverado truck from Alabama dealership in Nov 2015 with 24,000 miles on it.Since I have owned it the water pump has went bad the AC ECM went bad now today the AC line going to the condenser has cracked and leaked all the Freon out truck has 46,000 miles on it. Called customer service and complained we will see what happens.

Cam (not verified)    July 12, 2017 - 9:36AM

My A/C went out at 69K miles in my 2014 Silverado 1500. Almost $1,200 later I am learning that I am not the only one with this issue. Sucks.

2014 Silverado 38,000 miles out of warranty and my AC stopped working today. Called customer service and they want me to spend $125 to figure out what the problem is and then maybe they might be able to help. I traded a 98 F150 in on the silverado only because I needed 4x4. The Ford had 138,000 miles on it and still ran like new, I never had an issue with it and the AC still worked fine. I am going to get the ac fixed at a local shop and drive directly to the Ford dealer and trade it in. I will however send a photo of me and my new Ford to the CEO of GM.

Jim, but till you trade it in please drive careful. There is an open recall on the power assist, with no ETA or REMEDY TO FIX IT. Enter your vin # into the recall section on GM website. You can lose your electronic steering for a few seconds. GM hasn't notified anyone and even if they do, like I mentioned there is no REMEDY. Here is what the recall says.GM Recall #:

I own a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali truck. Same model with a faulty AC Compressor. I was told by two dealers that GMC is backordered on 20,000 of these parts. GMC will not recall because it isn't a safety issue, so doesn't meet government standards for a recall. This is complete BS. It will cost me over $1000 to fix and I have to wait 6 weeks for the part in the summer.
I will not be buying another GM vehicle.

This is a $20m problem that GM will not recall.

Sorry, but just got an email from the Class Action Lawyer. They said that, they have decided not to proceed with the case, so I guess GM wins again. Not sure if someone wants to call another lawyer.

Condenser needed replaced. 2015 Yukon Denali with 42,500 miles $1037. Still trying to get GM to pay for it.
