Owners of 2014 Chevrolet Silverados are hot about AC problems

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has many drivers hot under the collar because of continual problems with the truck’s air conditioning. There are multiple forums dedicated to the same issue. Some drivers had problems right after buying their pickups. Others are suffering with sweltering temperatures right now.

One forum I checked has 19 pages of complaints dedicated to the air conditioning issues. The last post, in September of 2016, pretty well sums up the frustration. This 2014 Silverado owner says he has had to take it in for repairs every three months. “This was my first new car to me. I was planning to buy one for my daughter, but not with this track record. I just had the AC fixed 2 months ago. Today, on the way home from work, the compressor seized and the belt broke. Now it's Friday, no service centers are open, and I live in the south so it is hot and I have no AC. I was planning to take the kids out on the boat, but I am not putting them in a hot truck with no AC. This may very well be the last Chevy I ever buy.”

This owner reported his problem, in late August of 2016. “So I have a 2014 Silverado crewcab. Last year during the height of summer with my kids in the truck my ac broke. I bought this thing new in June of 2014. So I take it in and it was a broken line. I was just a hair over the 36000 miles already in a year but the service guy took care of me. Well here we are now with the temps in the 100's in San Antonio 13 months after the ac was fixed, and it's broke again. I hate this truck.”

Other drivers are reporting similar issues. What appears to be the most upsetting is that the same issues keep reoccurring. The air conditioner suddenly starts blowing warm air. The owners say the repairs take time and never fix the problem for long. “Turns out the compressor and a
hose went out on it. Warranty took care of it but I was left without a vehicle for a few days and upset that practically a new vehicle was already having issues. Got my truck back and about 2 months later guess what? You guessed, the a/c went out again and another compressor went bad.”

A check of the website that monitors complaints about all vehicles, finds that there have been 11 formal complaints made about the ongoing problems with the air conditioning on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverados.

One owner named Brad, from Little Rock, says a dealership finally levelled with him and told him what the real problem is. Brad says they told him “They have a design flaw in the metal part of the hose so we replace the hose and add a support bracket. I asked them why the 2016 models do not have the bracket and was told the a/c hose was redesigned for them and the new hose would not work on a 2014 model.” Brad is furious because he had to pay for the repair and General Motors will not reimburse him.

Another owner, from Texarkana, adds “Was told by the dealer that a bracket had broken and a hose came loose and it would be 550.00 dollars to fix. Time to change brands.”

There have not been any recalls issued for the hose and bracket problems, but it sounds like the issue is wide spread enough that dealers should be aware of the proper repairs. If you are having your AC repaired, It might help to point out all of the complaints and see if you can get it replaced under warranty, or if they will work with you on bringing down the price.

I just bought a 2018 Silverado from priority Chevrolet in Norfolk Virginia and on day three of owning it noticed green oil in the right front fender well on the frame. Found a pin hole leak just below the low pressure service port at the t junction. Took back to dealer and they confirmed leak and said they would order part to replace and to not use the ac. Fine it’s fall/winter no biggie, but after a few days got to thinking about the defrost using the ac side to dry the air so I called dealer back. They tell me that the ac side is used during defrost but only to kick the clutch on and move air but the compressor is not being used. Huh? If you can see the clutch has kicked on then the compressor is engaged I say but he says the computer controls that and promises me that it will be fine to keep using the system even though all the oil has leaked out. How the hell is that possible? Im an aircraft mechanic and have a pretty good mechanical understanding but cannot figure out why they are leading me down this road. So I’ve been driving around two weeks now using defrost and the pinhole is still leaking green oil and I’m worried the compressor will fail later at some point. Is it that the dealer doesn’t want to have to give me a loaner vehicle while waiting for this part or am I wrong about how the system works. I’m not sure who to call at Chevy other then my dealer since I’ll only get the same answer. I just don’t want to be stuck replacing a compressor at 37,000 mikes just after warranty has ran out.

2014 Silverado has 40,000 miles on it and I have already replaced the compressor and hoses ($1,300)and still not fixed right. Have bring it back because there must be a small pin hole somewhere in the system. Not to mention every time I hit the breaks or turn signal my dome light flashes. Chevrolet trucks are all I have owned in my life (20 or more). We pay a premium for a better truck because it is supposed to be better built. I think It’s time to switch brands!

I also had similar issue - bought 2014 - it was a demo truck..
In 2016 around end of October the AC started blowing warm air.. I finally was able to get into the Chevy dealership and they found the hose was cracked.. they replaced it at no charge to me.
Not sure why anyone was charged for something that should have been under warranty. Truck has been running solid since. No other issues.. even after a kamikaze deer jumped in front of me...on Friday the 13th.
I've had a 2002, 2009 and now a 2014 silverado - the 2009 was a horrible year - that truck didn't run correctly. I kept my 2002 and traded it in for my 2014 - only because my 2002 was single cab and I needed more room for my daughter. My 2002 still had the factory breaks on it after almost 200k miles when i traded it in.;)
I love my Chevy truck.

I bought my truck Nov 2014 and was not pleased with it, I took it to the dealer because it was vibrating really bad at 65-70MPH and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem . At 37000 miles my a/c started blowing hot air not long after the warranty was up, I now have 48000 miles on the truck and now I have to come up with money to get the a/c repaired. The truck also makes a weird high pitch tone when i first put it in gear, needless to say this is very disappointing thinking I have a new truck and yet it's giving me these problems already.

I have 2014 chevy Silverado LTZ 6.2 4×4 8ve been bringing it for vibrations since I bought it to dealerships all over as I travel and always told same thing they cant duplicate problem now it's a metal clunking in stop and go traffic and to top it all off the AC problem that everyone else has had as well as the battery.......this is a junk brand it's my last GM and I'll always steer people clear

Well, I get to join the club of 2014 siverado a/c issues. Not sure what is the problem just yet as it just happened today. Sounds like everyone else has gotten no where with this problem. GM should be fixing this as they know it's faulty on their part.

I have read all of your comments and we have also gone through similar issues. We bought our 2014 Chevy Silverado in August of 2014. 3 months later on of our belts broke and left my husband stranded, the dealership took care it. We had to replace the battery last year, because it left us stranded... Paid out of pocket because out of warranty and now it is blowing hot air. We are think it needs to be recharged, any thoughts... I think it is too soon for a recharge especially with a pricey recharge. We are told it runs at $320.00+! It isn't the typical freon that it needs... Bummer. Here is to hoping it isn't something else other than a recharge that it needs and here is to hoping winter goes by really slow.

It's the same Freon. And it does not need to be charged. It needs to be fixed. Only way it losses Freon is if there is damage somewhere. It's either the hose, compressor, or condenser with a tiny hole. All 3 are extremely well known problems by GM that need to be recalls. I was told it was my hose. I fixed the hose. Still didn't fix the problem. Now I'm told it's the compressor. $800. I will trade the truck for a different brand if GM doesn't offer to help with the cost.

I have a 2014 Chevy Silverado LT Crew Cab with 5.3L 2WD. I have 31,400 on my truck. So I haven’t gone to the dealership just yet, but 3 days ago this same problem started on my truck, blowing hot air, pretty much can tell from the forum. That this is gonna be an $1,100 fix. I’ve always been a super Chevy supporter but this is crap

Hells Bells from Spring, TX, landscaping business same thing. Hoping for a quick resolve Going back to Dodge. Second Chevy with a/c issues

I bought a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 and my A/C doesn’t work also my A/C went out probably about 40,000 miles and all it does is blow in hot air. I wish Chevy would fix this issue for all of us! It’s not our fault they put a defective style a/c on these trucks.

I just got back from the local GMC Dealership/Repair shop and last week my AC all of a sudden went out. I bought 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 in Jan 2014 and have had a few recalls but no big problems, then this just happened. I opened my hood to see the AC belt completely off. Of course it wasn't just the belt, but the Air Compressor, they gave me a quote for $1,9476.00 (I'm in CA) to get everything fully repaired. Since I came across this forum beforehand I denied for them to fix it and called the FTC and the state attorney generals office to submit formal complaints! Please call the FTC 877-382-4357 and they will give you your states Attorney General office Number! This must be FIXED through GMC or a Class action Lawsuit needs to be obtained.

I guess you can also add me to the list of 2014 Chevy truck owners (41600 miles) with AC problems. Coming from a family that has owned Chevys back from 1968 this truck has been a POS. I bought it from the Chevy dealership lightly used, after a few months of owning it the electronic power steering went out, the truck was at the dealership for over a month getting fixed due to parts not being available. Then a few months later the battery just up and died on me, now today when I went to go home from work the AC is blowing hot. I guess I know why the last owner traded it in. I plan on calling the FTC to file a complaint and calling my Attorney General to file a complaint with them. With all the complaints about this AC system failing the same few ways I just cant understand how this cant be a RECALL!! I guess its time to start researching a new brand of truck, this is just getting sad.

Truck is less than 4 years old , 67,000 miles and the air compressor is shot and not under warranty . $1,1000 . Very concern about this . This is a issue an should be covered !!

TERRY EGGERT (not verified)    April 11, 2018 - 9:51AM

2014 Silverado High Country with 67,000 miles . You can add me to the list . Had to replace the compressor and the the Condenser GM needs a recall on these trucks as there are countless issues resulting in costly repairs . Mine was $1400.00 . I'm more upset at the blind eye approach instead of hitting head on . My suggestion is to contact Clark Howard Consumer activist on TV & Radio as I did. My hope is that it will air soon and I will receive a check for the cost . I have been a loyal customer for over 50 years , how they resolve this matter will determine what we do next as a company and re assess who we do business with. This is not an isolated matter , its widespread for this model which appears to be a component defect

Joshy's Daddy (not verified)    April 19, 2018 - 8:46PM

Add me to the list. Only had it 2 years, paid 800 to have it fixed right after I got it and it's out again.

Same issue 2014 Silverado LTZ was charged last month now hit air again. 2/2017 the line & compressor was changed. It’s full of Freon now & it’s still blowing hot air. We checked the blend door actuators they’re working fine. If anyone had info in what it could be please send me a email. [email protected]. I refuse to deal with the dealer they just giving us the run around because they don’t know what’s really wrong with it either.

Keshunda Jason (not verified)    May 16, 2018 - 7:03AM

Everyone please foward all complaints about the a/c issues to the better business bureau in a form of a written complaint online. I did it & received a call back from cooperate to help me fix the issue. When we complaint on Chevrolet website it doesn’t affect there rating at all & the complaints can’t be seen by others. They have to resolve all complaints that are posted to the better business bureau.

Mike (not verified)    May 22, 2018 - 5:25PM

The question remains, why do so many people purchase a GM product expecting quality in the first place. GM has a proven track record of building unreliable junk for several generations now, this isn't news by any stretch of the imagination. Whether this was before or after the sissy bailout that will never be repaid is beside the point. Absolutely no reason to buy one as long as legitimate manufacturers are still around.

Same here, have owned Chevy trucks since 1966, have always been satisfied until now, my '14 Silverado Z71 started blowing hot air yesterday, dealership (Midway Chevrolet in Pocomoke, MD) can't get me in until Monday, needless to say, these trucks are not "cheap" to purchase, can't wait to break out the "grease" when I get the bill for the repairs!!!

Chris (not verified)    June 3, 2018 - 2:35AM

I am just sick to my stomach. I bought a GMC Sierra Denali (2014) because I liked the ride, looks, power (6.2), and thought they were “professional grade”. My parking sensors went out, my A/C went out, the underside is complete rust, the transmission shifts all over the map due to 4 to 8 cylinder changes every 5 seconds, and doesn’t even have 75,000 miiles. I still owe a lot on it, and just so mad at myself for making a really bad decision that affects my family negatively. It is our family rig and is a total POS that is always broke down. My last truck did not drive as nice, not even close to the options, but my FX4 Ford F-150 went 176,000 miles with 0, yes 0 issues. Normal maintenance only. I would trade all the “bells and whistles” for cold A/C, a vehicle that the steering doesn’t go out when you brake, rusted up, sensor losing, battery eating, and GM dealer shrugging with no help piece of total sh!t.

I bought new 2014 z71 have put 0n 6000 miles on it, sees sunny days only complain a few times ac not cold out of warranty of course Does any one know an after market unit that would work on it 2018 looks to be a hot year

Shaun M McQuillan (not verified)    June 20, 2018 - 9:36AM

2014 Silverado This is the second time at the Dealership. First time they replaced the compressor, Now the same AC line that everyone is talking about. I fortunately paid for an after market warranty but it is still frustrating to deal with this when they know there is a problem. I will be without a car for several days again. I will never buy a Chevy again. Like a ROCK..... in my shoe......

Good luck,
