Ram prides itself on having redefined modern day trucks. Ram added luxurious interiors to its vehicles while making sure they were still workhorses. Car and Driver recognized the 2022 Ram 1500 for its towing capability and great fuel efficiency for a truck. Similarly, the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX is the fastest and most powerful mass-produced truck in the world. The Ram Heavy Duty is honored for being the most powerful, most capable pickup in the segment.
“Car and Driver tests more cars—more thoroughly—than anyone on the planet,” says Hearst Autos Chief Brand Officer Eddie Alterman. “Our Editors’ Choice lineup represents a wide spectrum of great cars that we editors would love to park in our garages if we only had the room!”
2022 Ram 1500
In its review of the Ram 1500 for the Editors’ Choice Award, Car and Driver praises the Ram 1500 for “Luxury-grade interior, cushy ride quality, still hugely capable on- and off-road.” In its summary, Car and Driver says, “The Ram 1500's unmatched luxury transcends traditional pickups without compromising its capability.”
The Ram 1500 has received countless awards in recent years, mostly for its luxurious interiors. When Ram decided to upgrade its truck, it took great pains to choose higher grade leathers and real wood for its interiors. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system uses a massive 12-inch touchscreen display that makes it easier for the driver to control.
2022 Ram 1500 TRX
Car and Driver applauds the 702-horsepower Ram TRX for its incredible performance and luxury. “Hits 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, can be jumped or comfortably driven sedately, has a luxury-grade cabin.” Yes, the TRX is the quickest, fastest and most powerful mass-produced truck on the market. Car and Driver summarizes it saying, “The 702-hp Ram 1500 TRX is a badass behemoth that makes every other full-size truck look like kids' toys.” You must admit, coming from Car and Driver, that description is pretty cool.
The Ram TRX adds a number of personalized performance pages to the Uconnect 5 system, so the driver can track the truck’s performance. It is also equipped with the latest safety technology like adaptive cruise control, collision warnings and 360-degree camera views. Class-leading ride and handling are accomplished via a segment-exclusive link-coil rear suspension system with optional active-level four-corner air suspension.
2022 Ram Heavy Duty Trucks
Many brands leave their Heavy Duty trucks as bare-bones work horses, not Ram. Car and Driver says, “Massive max torque and tow ratings, interiors can be positively palatial, rides better than heavy-duty rivals.” Palatial interiors? When was the last time you heard that about a heavy-duty vehicle? In recent years, Ram upgraded the interiors for the 2500 and 3500. It appears the editors noticed. “Not only are the Ram 2500 and 3500 immensely capable, but they offer unparalleled levels of luxury, too.”
The Ram Heavy Duty is the most powerful, most capable pickup in the segment. It offers a towing capacity of up to 37,090 pounds and a payload capacity of 7,680 pounds. Ram was the first to achieve the 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque milestone with the Cummins I-6 Turbo Diesel, now rated at a best-in-class 1,075 lb.-ft. of torque.
Eight Stellantis Vehicles Honored
Five other Stellantis vehicles received Car and Driver Editors’ Choice Awards. It is rare that anyone company would have eight different vehicles honored. In all, the 2022 Car and Driver Editors’ Choice list covers 116 vehicles over 37 market segments, selected from more than 400 models that the publication’s editors have tested.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L take Editors' Choice honors for Mid-Size SUV
It was a stellar showing for the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee and its three-row sibling the Grand Cherokee L. Car and Driver praises the Jeep Grand Cherokee saying, “Ruggedly handsome styling, generous standard safety tech, posh cabin on high-end models.” The summary for the Grand Cherokee L sounds almost surprised that the vehicle is as capable as the most rugged Jeep. “With room for up to seven riders, the Grand Cherokee L is an adventure-seeker's dream for family transport.”
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is also adding a plug-in hybrid model. The first-ever Grand Cherokee 4xe is set to deliver 25 miles of all-electric range, 56 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) and a combined driving range of more than 440 miles. The 4xe propulsion system combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack and a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine.
2022 Chrysler Pacifica Minivan
The company that created the minivan segment continues to lead the way with the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Minivan. The first minivan to offer both gas and hybrid powertrains, the Pacifica Hybrid delivers more than 80 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in electric-only mode, an all-electric range of more than 30 miles and a total range of more than 500 miles. Car and Driver says, “Highly flexible interior, optional PHEV powertrain, upper trims are downright luxurious.”
The Chrysler Pacifica has the most standard safety features of any vehicle on the market. One of its newest features is the FamCAM that lets the driver view the child in a rear-facing child seat. The Pacifica deserves an Editors’ Choice Award for that invention alone.
The 2022 Editors’ Choice list also includes repeat honors for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Giulia Quadrifoglio premium performance vehicles. The Giulia Quadrifoglio highlights Alfa Romeo’s exclusive motorsports expertise with a 505-horsepower, 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. The 505-horsepower, all-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio sets the benchmark for performance SUVs with a 0-60 mph time of only 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 176 mph.
