The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible is mechanically similar to the hardtop version of the modern super-muscle car, beginning with the 6.2L supercharged LSA V8 packing 580 horsepower and 556lb-ft of torque. The ZL1 Convertible will also include the incredible 3rd generation General Motors’ Magnetic Selective Ride Control complete with the Performance Traction Management system; two features which work together to make the ZL1 one of the best handling muscle cars of all time while also making the Corvette ZR1 one of the best handling supercars in all the world. This is the same adjustable suspension system that has helped the Camaro ZL1 Coupe to run an impressive 7:41 at the Nürburgring after helping the Corvette ZR1 to lap the massive German track in a scorching 7:19 - making it one of the fastest cars in the world. The traction management system in the ZL1 will also help those muscle car owners who want to stick to the straight track, making for one monster quarter mile car in stock form.
Removing the roof of a car can severely affect the structural rigidity so the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible features some unique modifications that help it offer the topless freedom without compromising the performance capabilities of the ZL1. A transmission support brace has been added to support the high powered drivetrain while an underhood strut tower brace, an underbody tunnel brace, a front X brace, rear V braces and reinforced a-pillars join the reinforced rocker panels and windshield header to help make this drop top muscle car as stiff as the coupe so that there is no unwanted chassis flex during spirited driving. For what it’s worth, these additions also make the 2013 Camaro ZL1 Convertible safer in the event of an impact but GM has done this in a way that only serves to bolster performance.
“The Camaro ZL1 convertible will be one of the most powerful and most capable, convertibles available at any price,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas.”
The 2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible will officially meet the world at the 2011 LA Auto Show and we can expect to see these new high performance drop tops arriving in the driveways of happy customers late in the 2012 calendar year.
