Hands On with the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Stop/Start system

At a recent Jeep event, we went hands-on with the 2015 Jeep Cherokee with its new stop/start system to improve fuel economy. Find out how it stacks to some of the competition's similar systems.

While at high altitude in Colorado, we drove the new 2015 Cherokee on a brief course designed to showcase the engine Stop/Start system. We took full advantage of the chance to use it in various scenarios and compare it to other vehicles with similar technology that we've driven in the past. While the Cherokee's may not be the best we've seen, it certainly is high up the list of favorites.

Funny enough, the chance to try this came as a side note to an event meant to showcase the new Jeep Renegade, which you can read about here. We were asked by Chrysler representatives to keep quiet about the Start/Stop tech we sampled, however, until today, for marketing reasons.

How Stop/Start Works
Now, we're free to give you our driving impressions, analysis, and thoughts on this system as it compares to others. To begin with, briefly, a Stop/Start system simply shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stopped and automatically starts it again when it's ready to go again. It's a relatively simple improvement that requires only a more robust starter and a few electronic controls to implement, but it can greatly improve fuel economy in the city where vehicles stop-and-go often.

In most vehicles, including the 2015 Jeep Cherokee we focus on today, the Stop/Start system works by simply turning the engine off when the vehicle is stopped, such as at a stop light or in traffic. When the driver lets go of the brake pedal, the engine is automatically started up again. It's a popular feature on most hybrid vehicles and is not proliferating into standard gasoline engines as well. A few things may pre-empt the Stop/Start system, such as climate control requirements, a low battery, engine faults, and so forth.

How It Feels in the 2015 Cherokee
For the most part, the Stop/Start system in the Cherokee is automated. We drove the Limited 4x4 model with a 3.2-liter V6 and new 9-speed automatic transmission. This 2015 Jeep Cherokee was well-equipped at $38,760, delivered. The Stop/Start engaged as soon as we brought the Cherokee to a complete stop at our first intersection on the course. The delay is roughly one second in length between a soft, comfortable stop and the engine turning off. The delay to re-start was a little less than that, happening as soon as the driver's foot is lifted from the brake pedal.

At a hard stop, the delay to turn off the engine is a bit longer, not happening until the vehicle is at a fully motionless state (not rocking). Re-start was still within a second.

For the driver, the engine shutting off is largely unnoticed unless you're anticipating it. For passengers, it's hardly felt at all, even when waiting for it or trying to feel it happen. It's more obvious when the windows are down, but only slightly more so as the V6 is a very quiet engine when idling. The re-start of the engine is far more obvious and comes through even when one isn't anticipating it happening, but this doesn't impart discomfort.

Comparing the Cherokee to Others
Few in the Cherokee's segment feature Stop/Start as an option, but several vehicles outside of its segment do. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, for example, has Stop/Start as standard, but in that vehicle, the engine cutting off and starting back up is disconcerting and tinny-sounding. So much so that several times while driving it, I was concerned that the engine had stalled out until I realized what had happened. Other vehicles, particularly V6 models in the Chevrolet lineup, feature very well-done Stop/Start systems as do most of the Toyota hybrid vehicles such as the Prius line and Camry Hybrid.

In comparison to other models with this technology as a whole, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee is a very good example of a well-done Stop/Start system. It's not quite perfect, but it's far better than many.

I have three settings one for headlight off delay, easy exit seat and engine off power delay....but it is set for 10 minutes. On my car....the auto restart shuts my car off anyway! Thinking we must have different software version because my 10 minutes is how long my radio has power after I turn off car! I also tested it out. So I guess I will just try to remember to turn of the auto restart after I push the start button! LOL

When I stop at signal/stop lights, if I do not press the brake HARD, but just gently enough to stop the vehicle, the engine does not stop. It remains running for as long as I do not press HARD on the brake pedal. ALSO, if equipped with ACC or adaptive cruise control, when the vehicle brakes to a stop, it remains running until accelerating once again. The ACC feature will disable itself if stopped for more than just a few seconds... 3 I think... but the engine still does not stop even when ACC disables. I live in pretty flat area, not sure if pressing lightly to stop on an incline and remain stopped without stopping the engine will work. I was looking for how to disable this feature ONLY because my husband was demanding it. After not finding it easily, I thought I would "google it". Found this post. I don't mind it because I have learned how to keep the engine from stopping if I do not want it to. GENTLE TOUCH REQUIRED. I have only had our 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit for 1 week, today. We traded in 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I LOVE the comfort as well as ALL THE bells & whistles in this Jeep compared to the last!

UPDATE: Unplugging the hood sensor works great. The only issue is that, on the 2016 Cherokee, the idiot light on the dash stays lit continuously, alerting you that the Auto On/Off is turned off. I can deal with that. A bid thanks to whoever figured out this trick.

Literally just bought my new 2016 cherokee and I thought it was stalling. Absolutely hate this feature. Never did it during test drive so had ZERO idea of this feature.

Lee Leddy (not verified)    August 1, 2016 - 3:48PM

I purchased a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and was never told of this start/stop feature and for obvious reasons, it sucks!! Its none of anyone business why I hate this feature, I own this piece of crap and I don't want it! It is not necessary for you (above) to understand why! How dare some one sell me this auto without telling me about this "feature"!!!! TYPICAL CAR SALES CRAP!

What about the impact of the start/stop on the battery life. The battery of my 1 yr old 2015 cherokee latitude died today. Mileage is 25K miles most on city. I jump started it and went straight to the dealer; so the alternator seems to be just fine. They said that a "Certified Technician" is required to check if something else caused the battery to fail., so had to leave the car overnight for the specialist to come -this happened today 8-4-2016. I believe that the increased cycling of starts & stops will reduce the life of the battery. At this moment, the dealer is paying the replacement, but, what will happen after the warranty expires, guess who's paying? One idea to disable the start/stop is changing the switch that disables it to do the opposite, it's deactivated by default, and you enable it at will...if you ever want to turn it on. Thoughts?

I hate stop start. I sit at a light and it starts two times. It is annoying. Jeep needs to make the button reversed. Push it once to be permanently off unless you want it. That's what BMW does. Make it the owners choice. I hate hate it!!!!

We have only had our 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit for 1 week today. I am the primary driver for this vehicle. I have adjusted to the Stop/Start. My husband has not even driven this vehicle yet, and is the secondary driver. He wanted me to find out how to disable the function. That is why I came to this forum where it was being discussed. I do not want to unplug the hood closure sensor. But I have also discovered that just gently holding the brake at stop-lights also keeps the engine running. If you are not pressing hard on the brake pedal, but just gently holding the vehicle at a 0, it does not stop the engine from running. ALSO, if you have the "adaptive Cruise Control" and use that feature, once the vehicle stops at the light and the ACC deactivates (if stopped long enough) then it remains running. I do not live in a very hilly area... so I am not sure if in a downhill or uphill incline if pressing lightly on the brake is effective in stopping the vehicle without stopping the engine.

auto-off very disconcerting and the radio always comes on when you start the car. Rented the SUV in Jackson, Wy. and got surprisingly good gas mileage. Annoyed and pleased at the same time.

I have a 2016 Cherokee with the re-start feature the I don't like . I disconnected the hood latch wiring harness on the hood latch in front of the vehicle. After pulling the little red clip and pushing in on the little red button the clip disconnected the wires and the system was turned off. There was a warning the first time I started the car on the dash, but went away after I started the car the second time.
So for the engine doesn't stop any more when I come to a complete stop.

Glen (not verified)    October 12, 2016 - 12:35AM

So my thinking on the ESS system is that someone needs to create a little relay module that wires across the switch and right about 5 seconds after the engine starts the relay toggles. This will then cause the switch to have been pushed thereby shutting off the ESS system. Should be an easy enough circuit to build and wire in. And if you really want the ESS back on, then just hit the switch because the relay is open. Just for info I've got the 2015 Grand Cherokee and it doesn't have the ESS system on it, although I hear that some 2015 GC's do have it (not sure about that however). Having driven a 16 Cherokee, I do know that I do not want this system and if we actually do purchase the 16 Cherokee that we're looking at, then I will be doing either the hood switch mod or finding someone who can build the thing I described.

There is only one thing to do. Boykot GM, Ford Jeep and Dodge and other cars with this system. I think that Hyundai og Madza does not have this system. These cars also have a better guarantee than American cars, so why buy a car, you do not want. If American car manufacturers will not produce cars we want, we have to buy other cars

Rich Carter (not verified)    December 21, 2016 - 9:22PM

I cant stand this feature, when you try to even park the car .. the engine shuts off and turns back on. I bought the "Smartstopstart" device to disable it and it worked for a few weeks than stop working. I had to return it twice! What a waste of money! I hope someone can figure how to permanently disable this feature. =(

I agree with most of the posts here, terrible feature. Come on Chrysler bring back my 1972 Dodge Dart with the slant 6 that ran flawlessly for 200k, and No computers!

Tonight when I got into my car after started up with my remote control, i was surprised that my system needs service. symbol A with circular arrow in amber color turned in. Surprising is My cat is just 1 month old with 1700 km only. How come it needs srvice that soon. then After 20 minutes of driving when i got home. I shut it iff and started again the symbol lights gone and system works again. Anybody knows whats going on? Please and thanks...
Mine is 2016 trailhawk. Please give me answer or any opinions you have.

I bought my Cherokee Trailhawk a few months ago and have fallen in love with it. What an awesome vehicle except for the engine stall function. Sure I can push the button EVERY time I use my vehicle but I forget but get reminded when the motor stalls at the first stop.GRRRR!

Well good news! I've been designing and building emergency vehicle electronic control circuits for the past 26 years now and had enough of this. I built a circuit that is quickly installed and will not interfere with the vehicle's other systems. Works like a charm, nothing to do.... just start and go! Oh...and be safe!

I agree with all of the negative comments here about the auto stop/start feature. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee as a rental vehicle and hate it. I was looking forward to driving it because I was thinking of getting once of these as my next personal vehicle but I definitely will not unless I can get one without this option.

Harry (not verified)    September 17, 2017 - 7:00PM

HATED this feature. Well, hated it for a couple months. Turned it off. Gas mileage dropped 3 mpg for the two months I didn't use it (50-50 city-highway about 180 miles per month HWY to lakehouse). Turned it on, not that 3 mpg would cost a whole bunch. It's now been two years since I turned it back on, and I absolutely don't notice any lag, delay, start-up noise, loss of power, etc. with it ON. THAT SAID - Why I here today? SQUIRRELS made a nest in my engine and chewed some wires so the Engine Light stays on and the Auto Start/Stop doesn't work. I had a 1995 JGC that a previous generation of squirrels nested in and cost me close to $3,000 NOT including insurance payments. Now, I LOVE this feature. Well, I'm really indifferent to it, but I STILL HATE THE SQUIRRELS!! In other words - perspective says this is nothing to get annoyed by. SQUIRRELS, however, . . .

I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 12,000 miles on it. Several times I have had it die on me at a stop light where I have to put it in park and restart it. As you can imagine this is annoying when I have a line of traffic behind me. Well anyway my mom took it to Idaho at the beginning of October and it did it to her as well. Last week I was picking up the kids from school and it died on me again but took a lot to turn it back on . Yesterday I was coming home from work and it died again but this time I could not get it to restart for quite awhile. After finally getting it to start I took it right back to the dealer which mind you I have had it in the shop twice before and got told we don't see anything wrong with it. So this time they ran it and found some codes on it but did not tell me what they were. I did hear them say something about the starter. At my breaking point. Love the car but not the issues. What should I do?

I have a 2017 JGC Limited and the hood switch seems to have worked. Even better is that the whole switch assembly pops up and out of the holder with just a small squeeze on the tabs on the top. No tools necessary! Doesn't appear to affect anything else and very easy to put back before servicing. Thank you for helping with this.

With the hood switch disconnected I would be worried that the car thinks the hood is open and that might affect the operation of the airbags and such in an accident.

d hansen (not verified)    February 7, 2018 - 2:02PM

my 2015 jeep began being very hesitant to restart after the auto shut down, then we had lights and stuff blink and then the A came on, stayed on with an exclamation point. off to the dealer last week and I was told that the constant stop/start wears the battery so I got a new battery free! guess jeep should have given that consideration when they added that feature. my friend has same car and same issues - guessing in a couple days when they check her car - she'll be getting a new battery too!

I disconnected the hood light switch on our 2015 Cherokee and it eliminated the stop/start issue but we are very concerned about weather the air bags are still 100% operational. We would not have disconnected the hood switch if there was a way to turn off the stop/start even if we had to do it every time we drive but we can’t find how to do that. We can’t find the supposed switch or button everyone is talking about. Thanks in advance for any help that is offered!

My dad bought me a 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE
The START STOP did work for a while and stopped working in 2018
I took my car to the dealership where my dad bought it the guy said it couldn't be fixed
When I put the heater or air conditioner on there is a message saying START STOP UNAVAILABLE then a big A with half of a circle light comes on
What could be causing this problem?
PLEASE HELP!

Gabriel Aguirre (not verified)    August 20, 2020 - 9:57PM

My start stop failed. It states that the battery is not sufficient recharge. I dont know why it states that even though i bought a new battery 200.00. Anyways, the system doesnt even work, and I really dont care much about it. It was a hassle when it worked. Now I just dont mind that its broken.
