You can order the all-new 2015 Subaru WRX STI now, and the last-generation 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution will be launching later this year. Both Rally-bred performance cars are worthy of consideration if you are looking for true race-tested all-wheel-drive performance car. But this is the last time the two cars will be offered together in the same model year, because Mitsubishi is dropping the Lancer EVO after the 2015 model year. So this is the last chance to compare the two iconic cars side by side. Which performance car would you buy?
2015 SUBARU WRX STI Sedan ($34,495)

2014 Mitsubishi EVO GSR Sedan ($34,995)
- Engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder
- Horsepower: 291 HP @ 6,500 rpm
- Power to weight ratio: 12.1 lbs/HP
- Torque: 300 lb ft. @ 4,000 rpm
- All-wheel-drive: S-AWC AWD with open front, electronically controlled center and rear differentials
- Transmission: 5-speed manual, or Twin-Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST). Automatic available only on the MR model ($38,195)
- Electronic Torque Vectoring VDC: Standard via Active Yaw Control
Sure there are other cars out in this category, but do they really match up with these two rally-tested performance cars? The other cars on the list could include the 256 hp 2014 VW Golf R 5-door that comes with the 4 Motion permanent AWD system, the 220 hp 2014 Audi A4 2.0T Sedan with Quattro AWD and the 300 hp 2014 BMW 335i xDrive Sedan with xDrive AWD.
Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution are close enough in terms of power and torque and their off-road all-wheel-drive capabilities, that it makes this a difficult choice to make if you don’t have allegiances to one brand. Both performance cars have been rally-tested since the early to mid 90s and have the pedigree to make them worthy of consideration. And both have received plenty of WRC championships between them to fill a trophy case. Which Rallycar would you park in your garage? Or if you wouldn’t choose either one, which performance car are you putting in your garage? Tell us your choice and why you think it’s the best.

Well like always Evo beats he sti. And they always compare the gsr which is evos base model to the sti. Why never the mr which is there fully loaded rally edition. But anyways beats the sti in all categories 0 to 60, quarter mile, handling/slippage, price. There is only one thing the sti beats the evo in and supposedly it's inside luxury. Even tho I am an evo guy I am staying facts by professional people that stated these things online/own reviews/forums. Top gear also did a review on them said they are the best/fastest 4cylender you can get/made/for your buck. So enough with all the bs. Reviews, numbers, stats are not opinions they are facts. So suck it subi fans because evo wins again.

All you need to look at is how much subaru has improved over the years vs the evo's. The new 2015 STi beats the evo on almost every aspect- the STi has more hp, better handling, that glorious wing on the back, upgraded electronics that stomp on the evo all day long, the flat 4 cylinder boxer engine with the amazing boxer rumble that has been proven many times and is still used by porsche, a supercar brand. Oh, and not to mention that amazing electronically controlled center differential. Lastly, if the evo is so damn good, and "crushes" the STi on every aspect, why are they stopping production? The new STi is so superior I don't even know why these cars are still being compared.

Taylor is right although the GSR is faster than the MR on everything but a track .My GSR has all the bits and pieces of the MR except sunroof ,Fosgate audio and Nav which is called the handling package only sold in Canada .As a previous 2012 STI owner it doesn't really compare in the handling department .The EVO is simply a blast to drive .STI was better for a long highway haul and some times I wished I had both .My 2014 EVO was about 7000 grand more than the STI in Canada maybe 10grand more for the MR which sucks because its an automatic .

the STi has go 2 engine sizes 2.0L for Japan and 2.5L UK and US,i live in a country where we use Right hand drive cars so we import cars like subarus from UK or Japan with a choice of either 2.0L or 2.5L engine depending on ones preference

Yay! Evo is SO great they are pulling it from their lineup next year. This is the last year to buy mitsubishi's supposed best car. Lol. Mitsubishi is also a company forecast to go out of business in Canada this Year. Buy them up while you can.

This guy on the sti better than the evo .Sti is copying the evo and its not better handling there really are no new comparisons other than Everyday Driver .The new sti in many peoples opinion is a cheap rip off of the evo and the evo is going out still a tad more sharper .Than the evo for making what the sti is today .

Lol if the evo is what "made" the modern sti, then why did the evo come out in 2003 and the wrx came out in 2001? And if the evo is "sharper", why are they stopping production? It just goes to show that more people are choosing the sti.

I bought my evo x new in '09, last one in Northeast i could find..leftover, paid $31K...gsr stripper..no wing (yay, I'm 54!), traded my 3 mo old R32 (was not impressed)..made it a point to test a 335xi and wrx sti as well (both suffered from terminal understeer)....5 years later still trying to find steering/handling/driving exp. to rival it..no track, just backroads...pure fun...no rattles/squeaks/51k mi never a glitch...great build quality

Ive owned the 2015 STI for a year now and being a die hard EVO fan I was really disappointed with the last evo. They don't even come with a sunroof... seriously!! and when looking at one you don't even know if its an evo, rallyart or stock lancer. After speaking to an Evo dealer the question I asked him was why is this the last evo.. he replied "They cannot compete with Subaru and compared to Subaru sales, Evo's doesn't even come close. I respect and love the previous Evo's but they had to ruin it with the new one. The one thing I don't like about the Sti is how they got rid of the recaros... one thing the evo still has which is awesome. Overall they are both great cars but lets face it STI hold there value pretty well and when you look at the new STI you know its an STI!!!

The part where you say that you cannot tell whether it's an Evo, Ralliart or stock Lancer is totally wrong, The true Evo is easy to spot, they have totally different flared wheel arches making the car sit wider and have a wider track, they have a totally different roof, with air channel ribs built in to improve airflow and handling and of course the signature Brembos. So regardless, a true enthusiast will know what you are driving. These are all details that make the car awesome and have been fine tuned in after years in WRC, things that people overlook, engines can be tuned to go as fast as you want but the core built and integrity is what makes a car and in my opinion The Evo is the best out there. I agree that not putting the Recaos in the 2015 is a real shame but this was not Mitsubishis call, it was pressure from the U.S. automotive safety authorities that said the Recaros air bag system just didn't quite meet new tighter regulations, they would not spend time and money to developing new seats knowing that this was the last year of production. The new Suburu as an awesome car too, it's going to be the only one of its kind left out there soon so hopefully it will carry on the legacy of true road legal rally cars.

I will not listen to people who trash talk the Evo X .The auto reviewer's tell it like it is so a guy coming on and trash talking any of these cars is just an idiot and is he being serious or just trying to start something .Listening to this guy with his 2015 STI saying the Evo comes with no sunroof knows nothing about the car and saying the Mitsu dealer told him they discontinued because the STI was selling more is a pile of garbage .Mitsubishi is going green and there are plenty of people that want the Evo to live on and lets face it ,my opinion sais the STI is horrible looking in comparison .

In the old days, Mitsubishi and the evolution 9 mr beat Subaru. Today compare the 2014 x to the 2014 sti and it still wins in reviews. Even compare the 2015 sti to the 2014 fq 440.. Owned! Why is Mitsubishi dropping the evolution? There's nothing to prove anymore and haven't you noticed the thick layer of filthy air in California or the u.s. for that matter? It's demand for more fuel efficient cars and Mitsubishi is making the right move towards that. Just thought I'd leave this for consideration on my opinion.

they stopped making evo because the evo has done its part like the supra, sti has a long way to go, if u really want to know which one is faster, ask the owners or watch videos on youtube, Always evo wins SORRY SUBARU

The evo is a nice car, but the dual clutch is bad and to front heavy. And who buys a 5 speed transmission today? In Europe it is normal to drive 140-180 km/h as normal cruising speed. At this speed the evo makes tremendous noise and sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Not nice for long trips.
Then i needed a hatch. All in all the STI suited better for me. The STI has no strut tower brace and soft bushing oem. Change it and it is a much nicer car.
I would choose the EVO X 5
Permalink
I would choose the EVO X 5 Speed instead of the SST EVO because the 5 Speed has better weight distribution and more tuning reserve then the Dual Clutch EVO!
I know the EVO is faster and better built then the sti but i needed a hatchback to put my playboat kayak in. And i like the sound of the sti more.
With stage 2 tuning strut bars harder bushings the sti is much better then original!
Otherwise brakes, steering, torque vectoring, engine from the evo is better!
