Hyundai Windshields are Cracking - Customers File Lawsuit

Two plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit against Hyundai in regards to windshields prematurely cracking on their 2020 Hyundai Palisades.

An article released by David A. Wood with carcomplaints.com reported a lawsuit being filed against Hyundai by two individuals by the name of Lorenzo Ford and Tina Forehand. They are both owners of a 2020 Hyundai Palisade and unfortunately, suffered from defective windshields that prematurely cracked on them. This case is now known as Ford, et al., v. Hyundai Motor America, et al.

Lorenzo and Tina claimed a pebble had struck their windshield and left a crack. For Lorenzo, his 2020 Palisade had about 4,225 miles and got quoted $880 to replace it. Tina's 2020 Palisade had approximately 2000 miles and had to wait three weeks to get her windshield. She was charged $250 for replacement.

Prices seem to be all over, and the mileage seems to vary as well, which is natural as pebbles may occur at any mileage. Bizarrely, some owners reported their windshields cracking without even coming into contact with anything. Issues with the windshield on Palisades and even the Kia Telluride existed only a few months after owners started taking delivery of their cars. Even small insects clashing with the windshields have caused cracks, which is a bit alarming. As an automotive journalist reviewing cars, I have encountered the same problem in a Hyundai test car.

A few weeks ago, I was sent the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid as a test car. I publish video reviews on my YouTube channel, and I have been using a Manfrotto camera mount to place my DSLR camera onto the windshields of the past 100 vehicles I have reviewed. After I finished filming my review, I began to pull on the little tab of my mount to release it from the windshield and boom, and the windshield cracked on me.

This issue has never happened to me before in any other car that I have reviewed. Again, I used this mount in the last 100 vehicles that I have tested. Somehow, under the pressure of me releasing my mount, the windshield just cracked and left a massive spiderweb crack. A day later, I was driving down the highway, and a truck flung a nefarious pebble next to the spiderweb I produced and left a little crack. No matter what, the windshield in my test vehicle would've needed replacing.

Interestingly, Hyundai refuses to admit their windshields are defective. Many owners say that the cracked windshields are becoming a distraction to driving, but as of now, Hyundai requires owners to pay for a replacement windshield. These allegedly defective windshields and replacement windshields have cost owners up to $1,600.

The Plaintiffs are seeking to have Hyundai buyback vehicles, cover replacement costs, or to reimburse owners for losses caused due to their windshields. Replacing windshields can also affect the value of the car, which adds to the cost owners are already paying to replace cracked windshields.

2020 Hyundai Palisade Front

I do hope that Hyundai can quickly remedy this situation because their cars are truly great to drive and do come in at an attractive price for the masses to afford. Hyundai was touting their double junction glass technology on the new 2020 Sonata and how it even had soundproofing material inside their double pane glass. And these are all great things because the Sonata was a hushed automobile; however, I noticed that the wind noise at highway speeds became far louder and was very obviously coming from the front.

Hyundai has always done a great job listening to the consumer and giving the end-users a quality product. Hopefully, Hyundai can take this situation and turn it into a positive to help improve future cars not to have the same issues.

Same! 2022 Tucson. Had two chips fixed, got a third chip that caused a large crack moments later. Then to make matters worse, got my 4th chip after that. Long story short, windshield needs to be replaced. I’ve owned many vehicles over the years this is the cheapest crap I’ve ever owned.

Leased a 2020 Santa Fe, it has 900 miles on it, and already I need to replace the windshield. Appears to be a chip from a rock, hitting the windshield. When we leased the vehicle 30 days ago, I found it odd that the agent was insisting windshield coverage, which leads me to believe the manufacturer knows of the defect.

I own a Hyundai 2029 Santa Fe and my windshield cracked also. It was sitting in the a private parking space at my work. At the end of my work day I came out and found a two foot crack going up and across to the drivers side from the center bottom of my windshield. Then over the weekend while sitting in my carport a second crack appeared which is still growing past 16 inches. I think that the windshields are cracking due to stress caused by a miss match to the cars frame.

Hello, I just brought my 2021 palisade on Oct 2, 2020 on Oct 5, 2020 a small pebble hit the front windshield and made a crack. I went straight to the dealership so they can stop it before it starts to run. I never heard back from the service department. On Oct 9, 2020 I went back to them because the windshield now has a crack from the bottom and half way to the top now. I didn't have my Hyundai a week from I occurred the problem with my windshield.

My new 2020 Palisade (purchased JUL 2020) windshield recently cracked starting right behind the rear view mirror; the crack is now approximately 20 inches long. The start of the crack shows no indication of an impact...it just starts at the top of the windshield. We noticed it after it extended beyond the darkened area around the camera/rear view mirror and, within a day, it expanded down and across the windshield. The local auto glass repair shop has been trying to get a replacement now for 3 weeks but has been unsuccessful. So, on a whim, I looked up "Hyundai Palisade Cracked Windshield" and found that this is apparently a common problem. This is very inconvenient, unsightly, and potentially dangerous as the crack continues to grow.

Update on my chipped windshield on my 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, I was told by my insurance agent that Hyundai's are prone to crack or chip more often because of the angle of the windshield

I have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra. My car has been parked in front of my house for 4 days without being driven. I auto started my car on Sunday to go to church, when I got into the car and closed my door I heard a pop and my whole back windshield shattered. I got out and looked all around the car and nothing around it that may have fell on it. It them started caving in. Someone to me to search to see if there were any other complaints about windshield and I stumbled upon this forum. I will be contacting Hyundai tomorrow.

It happened to me also. I had an Elantra a few years back. My front windshield, back windshield, and front side driver window exploded. Nothing hit these windows ; no other vehicles were around. Also, I was parked at McDonald's Restaurant when all of a sudden, I started hearing a loud explosion coming from my front side driver window exploded in the panel as the window was rolled down. Hyundai refused to acknowledge any problems.

I have a 2021 Hyundai Palisade and the first week I had it a pebble hit the front windshield and I got a chip right in the driver eye view. I had that fixed and 4 days later I was driving and the windshield cracked, no other vehicles around the car when it happened. I have 1,400 miles on the vehicle and two windshield incidents within a week of each other. Very frustrating!

Hello, I was able to get the dealership to pay for a windshield replacement and do the recalibration. I call corporate and I talked with the dealership.

I purchased a 2020 Santa Fe in November. Yesterday, my windshield cracked and began to immediately spread across the driver's side. I don't know if a pebble hit it or not but I didn't expect it to crack and spread so quickly.

Eric Matos (not verified)    January 31, 2021 - 6:20PM

We also have a 2020 Palisade, and yesterday for the second time the windshield broke again. The first time happened with less than a 1,000 miles. I decided to see if I was the only person with this problem, but I can see I am not. Hopefully Hyundai comes forward. Also I have noticed the outside loud noise by the mirrors. Is driving me insane!!

We owned our 2020 Palisade for a few months (less than 1,000 miles) when we received our first crack due to a small pebble. Had glass company come out repair to prevent it from getting worse and the repair immediately made it worse. We replaced the windshield for $1200.00 plus cost of install and calibration, which added up to just under $2000.00. Within 6 months of replacement, I got hit again with small pebble, which barely hit the windshield, causing it to crack large enough that it could not be repaired. We have chosen not to replace it for the second time. Now, I have my third crack. Wished Hyundai would stand behind their product. Obviously, it is a manufacturing issue due to the amount of Palisade owners having the very same issue.

I have a 2020 Santa Fe and apparently had a pebble hit at some point down by the bottom of the windshield. Car sat parked for 3 or 4 day but it snowed while sitting, get back in and have a 4 inch spider crack. Finding there has to be a calibration done after new windshield is installed which will cost more than the windshield. Don't understand why a calibration is needed when it just looks like a projection is on the glass.

I have a 2020 Sonata Limited. On a cold morning the front defrost caused the windshield to crack from one side all the way to the other side. There had been no previous damage to the windshield. It seems to be an issue with their glass manufacturer.

Joey Morasse (not verified)    March 9, 2021 - 12:46PM

My 2015 Sonata had the windshield crack on it during the winter. The temps were not out of the ordinary for any other winter we have had. For sure defective...add me in to the pile of the same issues...Hyundai, are you listening?

I bought a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe back in October 2019. This is the second windshield I'm having to have replaced. It instantly cracks! No chip. With in the same day of like what might been a small pebble hit the crack is 1/2 way running down my windshield. There is definitely an issue with Hyundai glass. I had a rock hit my dodge caliber back in like 2009 and it didn't even crack it left a chip and I could easily have it fixed no replacement and I was on the interstate going at high speed when that happened. Now riding on a little 2 lane road and going slower and something little didn't even make a loud sound hits my windshield in my Hyundai and I got a crack running almost down my whole window the same day. I'm pissed. I would love to take part in a class action lawsuit. This has cost me over $1,000.00 out of pocket cost.

I bought my Hyundai Santa Fe in Nov 2020. A crack from a rock, $2100 and now what sounded like a minor rock hit, windshield cracked again. This is an issue with Hyundai. I have never had these many issues, in this short of time.

Heard a loud pop( sounded like a shot) to find a round crack about the size of a baseball. Insurance estimate through Safelite is about $800.

2800 miles at a red light and heard a pop and saw a crack in bottom right corner. By the time i got home it wss 8 inches long. No way anything hit it. My windshield is smooth to the touch on the outside.

My daughter has leased a new 2020 Hyundai Tucson in November 2020. Four months later with only 1100 miles on it a crack appeared on the windshield and she insists that she did not hear anything hit it. I can’t see any visible marks from a rock hitting the windshield. The crack appears to have started from the bottom, near the wipers, on the driver’s side, and travelled up and over to the passenger side. I will be going to the dealership to let a service advisor look at it. I am sure they will try to say that it was damaged from a rock but I highly doubt it.

2020 Tucson, heard a pop it was dark so I didn't see anything. when I went out to get into the car a long crack on the bottom of the windshield.

DAVID MAESTRI (not verified)    April 3, 2021 - 4:36PM

Same issues but on a 2016 hyundai sonata limited. First time I searched for replacing a windshield I was met with a minimum $800 cost due to it being a "dealer only item" which meant I had to order directly from hyundai no matter who I bought the windshield from. Cheapest I was able to get out was $500 after making a insurance claim and paying a deductable.

2 months later my windshield was hit with a pebble on a main road and suffered a crack at the corner of the windshield, I placed some nail glue through the crack to prevent spreading which worked. About 6 months after that the bottom left corner was hit with a small rock and it literally shattered it all the way across, luckily there is tint on the inside of the window which probably prevented it from being completely destroyed, the crack goes pretty much all the way through.

2020 Palisade purchased end of Feb 2020. I have replaced the windshield 3 times and it needs to be replaced a 4th time, but I'm tired of replacing windshields so I'm waiting for a few more cracks before getting a new one. 13 months, 3 windshields. Sorry, that's not normal.

James Pratt (not verified)    April 26, 2021 - 1:12PM

I brought a equus from Doug's Hyundai here in Everett Wa. And let me tell you.....it's been a pure nightmare.
I brought the car used but it was inspected and cert by hyundai as they say but I noticed the TMPS stayed on and I had them write it down to be repaired.
Now a year later and I'm still having problems and they've had my car in for this so called simple repair several times without any luck on seeing a fix to this problem.
Now come the icying on the sour cake. On trip number 5 to the shop they give me a 2020 Santa Fe as a loaner. I was driving to work and a small rock hit the front glass and whata you know. It caused a crack!!!! And I'm betting this is going to cost me a mint.
If anyone have any idea where I can file a complaint about this windshield I'd really appreciate it.

Thuy Phan (not verified)    May 7, 2021 - 9:21PM

Same issue. There definitely needs to be a class action suit or attention drawn to this issue. My 2019 Santa Fe cracked 3 months after purchasing. After getting estimates around $1k decided to fill the liong crack. Yesterday after work I have another long crack. Both times the rock must’ve been minor because it was nothing large or obvious that hit my windshield. Both times the crack spread very fast. I’m afraid to get it replaced after reading this is a common problem for fear of it happening again and constantly dropping thousands everytime. Beyond frustrated & upset. Where do I sign up for a class action?
