I Finally Got the Rivian I Wanted and Traded My Model 3 for the R1S, and It Feels Like a Massive Upgrade

After finally trading his Tesla Model 3 for the Rivian R1S he always wanted, Jeff reveals why it feels like the ultimate upgrade, sparking a debate among former Tesla owners who share their own surprising EV journeys.

Scrolling through the “RIVIAN Electric Vehicles Discussion” group on Facebook, I came across an interesting post by Jeff Janicki, who recently traded in his Tesla Model 3 for a Rivian R1S. Jeff’s experience resonated with many EV enthusiasts, as he detailed the reasons behind his decision and the significant improvements he noticed. Like many others, he had his eye on a Rivian years ago, but back in 2020, the company wasn’t quite ready. Now that he finally has one, he couldn’t be happier.

Jeff shared his experience in a post that caught my attention. He said, “I just traded in my Model 3 for the R1S, and I couldn’t be happier. To be fair, I wanted a Rivian back in 2020, but they weren’t quite ready yet. I love the extra space, as the Model 3’s back seat is terrible, and I won’t miss the constant window noise (mine never seemed to seal properly). I did enjoy driving the Model 3, it was a good car, but this feels like a massive upgrade. Of course, my Model 3 was a lower-end version, so I’m unsure how those with a fully loaded Tesla would compare the two.”

This sentiment is one shared by many EV owners making the switch to Rivian’s lineup. While the Tesla Model 3 is undoubtedly a solid electric sedan, those moving to the R1S often describe the experience as an undeniable upgrade in terms of comfort, build quality, and overall driving experience.

Rivian R1SA Growing Trend Among EV Enthusiasts

Jeff’s post quickly gathered attention, sparking conversations among other EV owners who have either made the switch to Rivian or are considering it. Laurie, another user in the group, shared her thoughts on moving from a Model X to an R1S: “I switched from a Model X a week ago, and I love it. There are a few things I miss, like having all the controls integrated into the yoke, the rear-seat entertainment system for my kids, and the convenience of opening and closing doors with the push of a button, but none of those are essential. My kids find the back seat much more spacious; they love having USB ports everywhere, and I appreciate that my water bottles finally fit in the cup holders and that there’s a designated spot for my purse. Charging at home is easier with the front-mounted charging port, and the overhead parking camera angle is a game-changer. I love these features and hope you enjoy yours, best of luck.”

Laurie’s experience highlights the practical benefits of switching to Rivian, even for those coming from Tesla’s higher-end vehicles. While some Tesla conveniences are missed, Rivian’s thoughtful design choices make up for them in meaningful ways.

Weighing the Costs: Is the R1S Worth It?

Another user, Frank, chimed in on the discussion with a different perspective: “I’ve had a Model 3 and Model Y since well before all the recent Elon-related controversies, and I still really enjoy both. I don’t plan on getting rid of them anytime soon, though I do have an R2 on order, so one of the Teslas will likely go when it arrives, but not both. As much as I love the R1S, I just can’t justify spending over $100K on a car.”

Frank’s comment touches on a common dilemma, while the Rivian R1S is an exciting, premium electric SUV, its price tag can be a dealbreaker for some. With Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y offering great performance and affordability, not everyone is willing to make the leap to a six-figure vehicle. However, for those who prioritize adventure, luxury, and advanced technology, the R1S proves to be a compelling option.

A Premium Experience That Justifies Its Price

Matt, another member of the discussion, highlighted the quality differences: “The R1S is much more premium, as it should be for double the price. That said, the new Model 3 Highland is significantly quieter and more comfortable. If I needed a smaller sedan, I’d get one in a heartbeat.”

This comparison underscores how Tesla continues to refine its vehicles while Rivian positions itself as a more rugged, high-end alternative. The Rivian R1S is designed for those who want an adventure vehicle with cutting-edge technology, whereas the Model 3 remains the go-to option for efficiency and affordability.

My Opinion

From my perspective, Rivian has created something truly unique with the R1S. While Tesla has done an incredible job pioneering electric vehicles, Rivian is offering a fresh take on what an EV can be, combining premium materials, a sense of adventure, and a solid driving experience. I’ve seen firsthand how people who switch from Tesla to Rivian describe the transition as moving to a more refined and capable SUV. That being said, I understand why some Tesla owners might hesitate due to price or missing certain Tesla-exclusive conveniences. Ultimately, if you're looking for a high-end electric SUV with off-road capability, luxurious features, and an engaging driving experience, the R1S feels like a solid investment.

The Rivian Experience: Real-World Ownership Insights

Switching to Rivian brings with it a new set of experiences, including road trips, software updates, and charging considerations. For those curious about how the Rivian R1S handles long journeys, check out this real-world 1,300-mile trip in an R1S using Tesla Superchargers. Many owners have found that Tesla’s charging network, combined with adapters, makes road trips with Rivian vehicles much more convenient.

Meanwhile, if you’re trying to decide between an Rivian R1S and a Tesla Model Y for your growing family, it’s worth exploring what each vehicle offers in terms of space, technology, and practicality.

Of course, Rivian ownership isn’t without its challenges. Some have reported issues early in their ownership experience, as detailed in this story of an R1S that died four hours after purchase. Yet, others have come to love their Rivian despite minor quirks, like an auto-unlock feature that wasn’t actually broken.

A Moral Lesson for Prospective EV Buyers

Jeff’s story, along with the insights shared by other Rivian and Tesla owners, brings us to a simple but important lesson: every vehicle choice comes down to personal priorities. Some drivers seek affordability and efficiency, while others prioritize luxury and adventure. No car is perfect, and switching between EV brands will always come with trade-offs. The key is understanding what you truly value in a vehicle and making the best choice for your lifestyle.

I have had two Model Xs and got a Rivian R1S about two years ago. This was well before all the craziness surrounding Musk, but I wanted a vehicle with more space and the ability to drive in tough conditions. The Rivian is better than the Tesla in every way. If you don't want to spend the money for a R1, wait for the R2s to come out. You won't be sorry.

We own 2 Teslas and 2 Rivian R1S's. While I would hesitate to buy another Tesla in the current political environment, I am not in a hurry to sell the ones I have. I bought my Rivian to haul 3 dogs in crates and all my stuff cross country 2x's a year. Teslas are simply not big enough for my needs. But we love driving both sets of cars. My husband drove his Tesla cross-country the entire way using Full Self Driving. And I was able to ditch my car top carrier and still have plenty of space for my cross-country drive. No issues with charging either car along the way.

Hi I just bought the R1s and I swear it's worth every penny, I thought that I should wait at least another 5years then it would be enough ev's on the road to then feel safe to get one. But I pulled the trigger, I live in Chicago were it gets bitter cold, but I feel pretty good that my R1s will pull through despite the cold, this suv has a ride like a l luxury car, and the speed of a sport car, it has fine lines that will make you say wow I did good, has all the latest techs, I've never owned a Tesla now I never will.
I am a Chicago firefighter and Iam not easily impressed but I have to say I have never felt the joy of driving like I do my R1s, it is like the comfort of being at home in you favorite place to sit. (FYI Rivian is not putting me up to advocate for them) lol I just want you to share my adventure so when you get one you can say it's everything Watson said. Guys have you ever asked the wife do you need to go anywhere and IL drive ,and it's not a problem now that's crazy lol. I can go on and on about my true feelings about my R1s, but I think you
No where I'm coming from.
