We got a rare glimpse today of an updated sketch of the 2024 Ram 1500 BEV. It came during a speech by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. Tavares was releasing details about the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 Plan. The Ram 1500 is a huge profit center for the brand and its parent company Stellantis. Ram has already admitted that it will be late compared to other entries in the electric truck market, but it is promising to use the extra time to design a better truck than the competition.
Dare Forward 2030
Tavares said “Stellantis will be the industry champion in climate change mitigation, becoming carbon net zero by 2038, with a 50% reduction by 2030. Taking a leadership role in decarbonization, as well as a decisive step forward in the circular economy, is our contribution to a sustainable future.
As part of that leadership, we are setting the course for 100% of sales in Europe and 50% of sales in the United States to be battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) by the end of this decade. We plan to have more than 75 BEVs and reach global annual BEV sales of 5 million vehicles by 2030.”
2024 Ram 1500 BEV
Tavares introduced the sketches of the Ram 1500 BEV saying “The Ram 1500 BEV will enter the hot pickup market in 2024. According to our Internal Performance Index, our Ram 1500 will outperform our competitors on the attributes our customers care most about: range, towing, payload, charge time. Really thrilling!”
During the Stellantis EV Day presentation, in July of 2021, Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles said the Ram 1500 battery electric truck will be built on the STLA Frame platform. There are four STLA platforms, Frame will provide the underpinnings for the body on frame vehicles like large SUVs and the Ram trucks. STLA is pronounced Stella, and the different sizes correspond to the size of the batteries. The Frame size battery should be 159-200 kilowatt hours and provide up to 500 miles of range.
Gilles said that the battery will sit “nice and low” in the truck and the Electric Drive Modules or EDMs will be on toward the outside of the vehicle, allowing the designers greater versatility in creating “very-attractive designs”. Gilles said Ram will “Redefine what the full-size truck looks like and also how it works.”
Tavares Promises an Electric Truck to Make Customers Proud
Tavares reiterated those promises today, “Make no doubt, we will bring the best electric truck to the full-size segment. And Ram will continue delivering fully electrified solutions in the majority of its segments by 2025. And a full portfolio of electrified solutions for all of its segments no later than 2030.”
As he wrapped up the portion of the two hour speech dedicated to the Ram 1500 BEV, Tavares said, “The competition is fierce, and we are ready to take on the fight for the top spot.”
“Yes, Rest assured, when we put the Ram badge on our BEV pickup truck, it will be something our customers will be proud of.”
You can watch the entire Stellantis presentation.
Today, CEO Tavares also showed photos of the Jeep brand’s first-ever fully electric SUV launching in early 2023. I will have much more on that in a separate story.
