The folks from Ford Motor Company have been pretty quiet about the future of the high performance Ford Mustang lineup, but it is widely known that the 2015 Mustang will get either an SVT or Shelby variant for the 2016 model year. It might be called the SVT Cobra and it might be called the Shelby GT350 or GT500 - no one really knows. I believe that it will be the GT350, but some leaked company software shows that it might be an SVT model. It might be powered by a super tuned, naturally aspirated version of the same 5.0L V8 that will power the 2015 Mustang GT or it might derive bigger power with the help of forced induction – again, no one really knows. However, we know that the new high performance S550 Mustang is on its way and the video below from Road & Track is rolling proof.
The next generation Ford Mustang captured in the video below is very clearly based on the 2015 Mustang and we can see that from the vast portions of the car which are not covered. However, the covered front end of this Mustang appears to be a little bulkier than the Mustang GT so when combined with the extremely loud quad exhaust setup that is unique from the dual tips on the Mustang GT, it is expected that this is what we will eventually know as the 2016 SVT Cobra or the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang.
In any case, the new Ford Mustang shown in this Road & Track video is something special. Looking at the video only seems to confirm things that we already knew. The Shelby/SVT Mustang will have a unique front fascia, a unique hood, unique wheels and likely some monster brakes – all of which are hidden away in this video. However, Ford isn’t able to cover up the fierce growl of the powerful V8 engine tucked under the hood. The driver of this mysterious S550 Mustang barely tickles the throttle as he or she hurries away from the prying eye of the videographer/photographer, but that is just enough to get out attention. This Mustang has an awesome grumble to it and unlike the current GT500, there doesn’t seem to be any audible indication that this car is supercharged.
The video is very short and it only shows the next generation Ford Mustang SVT/Shelby backing away from the camera and then hurrying to the entrance to the parking lot – but anyone who loves the Mustang or the American performance car world will most certainly find themselves watching this video over and over again, just to hear the raspy exhaust tone around the 10 second mark. Anyways, without further delay, crank up your speakers and behold the growl of the next generation of high performance Ford Mustangs.
