The New Subaru Outback Wilderness Just Took A Backseat to The Hot Crosstrek

Subaru of America announced October sales, and the new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness can’t keep up with the hot Crosstrek compact SUV. The Crosstrek, with 10,591 models delivered to customers, outsold all 2022 Outback midsize SUVs, which had 8,548 sales in October.

We would have thought Crosstrek sales would slow and Outback sales with the new 2022 Wilderness trim level would be heating up. It has been a weird year for all automakers, and it’s turned Subaru of America upside down. Canada also saw the Crosstrek subcompact SUV have its best month ever.

With a refresh and the addition of the new Sport trim level, the Crosstrek is purchased by a younger demographic, and they aren’t waiting on the sidelines this fall. A much different buyer buys the Outback.

According to Subaru, the average age of Outback buyers is 45, and the gender split is 52 percent male, 48 percent female. Seventy-eight percent are married, and the average household income is $75,000 to $99,000. More of these customers are waiting to see what the future brings.

While the new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness will navigate a steep rocky trail in the mountains, most buyers are using the Outback for everyday use and are more concerned with safety. These customers are looking for a vehicle that will not only get them to work in all conditions but are also concerned with safety and security.

The number one occupation of those buying the new Outback is educators, followed by health-care workers (a lot of buyers are nurses), and the third group is people in technology fields. These buyers are well-informed consumers who come to the Subaru retailer “armed with a whole lot of technical information,” says Peter Tenn, a planning manager for Subaru of America.

Interest is high for the new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness, and retailers are selling as many as Subaru of Indiana Automotive can produce to outdoor enthusiasts with active lifestyles. But the large majority of Outback buyers are conservative and are waiting for the market to settle.

The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is the newest model in the lineup, but it just took a backseat to the hot Crosstrek. As our source close to Subaru said, “It will be an interesting fourth quarter.”
