Subaru Just Improved Forester’s Worst Feature

The 2025 Subaru Forester, a significant leap forward from its 2024 predecessor, has successfully addressed a major concern of the previous model. This pioneering revision, a first for any Subaru model, is certain to be warmly welcomed by all customers.

Hate the old one? I bet you'll like the new one.

Ok, hate is a strong word, but I'm not far off. The Subaru Forester is still the top-selling model in Subaru of America's lineup, and the next-generation 2025 Forester just got better. The Auto Stop/Start is a fuel-saving feature that owners of the fifth-generation model disliked the most.

Forester owners say they despise the compact SUV's stop/start system more than anything else, so much that they turn it off. Subaru says it's improved. Read my most despised Auto Stop/Start feature story here.

Subaru has made significant improvements to the Auto Stop/Start feature, a change that is sure to please potential buyers and current owners.

The 2025 Forester is powered by an updated version of Subaru's 2.5-liter, four-cylinder Boxer engine. It now produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque.

Subaru says the engine produces more power at lower rpm, making it quicker off the line. Essential engine parts have been updated to make the engine more efficient, reliable, and lighter—the auto-stop/start is one of them.

However, the most significant upgrade could be Forester's new automatic stop/start system, which is designed to save fuel. The feature was added to many Subaru vehicles starting in 2020 and 2021. You know how it works if it's on your Subaru model.

Subaru isn't alone.

Many automakers use a system that automatically stops the engine when the car comes to a complete stop for more than a few seconds. This system saves fuel whenever the vehicle stops at a stop sign or waits at a traffic light. It does work. Read my report here

In previous Forester and Outback models, Subaru's stop/start system shakes the car more than any other automaker's. A recent San Diego Union-Tribune column says Subaru is among the worst for engine vibration on restart. They say Subaru's Boxer engine design, in which the horizontally opposed pistons create more significant side-to-side movement and more vibration.

While Subaru has not publicly announced the improvement of Forester's new auto stop/start system, a report from Automotive News reassures us, stating that "The stop-start system is barely detectable." This news will surely bring relief to current owners.

There's more.

But the improvements don't stop there. The 2025 Forester boasts a range of additional upgrades that will surely pique potential buyers' interest.

On Sport trim levels and up, paddle shifters on the wheel allow them to simulate eight fixed transmission ratios, up from seven on the outgoing Forester. Other changes include revised tuning to the standard all-wheel-drive system for better stability while cornering.

A hybrid version of the Forester comes with a power and fuel economy that will be officially announced later. Stay tuned.

Other notable new Forester upgrades

Automotive News says, "Subaru buyers have long coveted the ability to go anywhere. But they increasingly want more creature comforts and connectivity, a major focus of the latest Forester."

Automotive News says there are additional notable new Forester updates. They are:

  • Improvements in the engine's noise, vibration, and harshness
  • Forester's new electronically assisted steering rack provides more direct response natural steering dynamics and is more comfortable to drive.
  • Forester features an upgraded crash structure to meet future crash tests.
  • Forester gets new convenience tech: A 360-degree overhead camera view, a smart rear-view mirror, and a new kick sensor-activated hands-free power rear liftgate.
  • The next-generation Forester receives all-new, more comfortable seats.
  • Roof racks and rails are standard across the Forester lineup for the first time.
  • The more extensive rear cargo area has new mounts and utility hooks for securing accessories.
  • Hidden outdoor references.

Automotive News says, "Subaru engineers and designers know their customers and have tucked references to outdoor life throughout the latest Forester. There are paw prints, boot prints, a lantern, a telescope, a compass, and the outline of a mountain range embossed on interior door panels. The silhouette of a bird is featured in the corner of several glass panels."

Subaru Corporation listened to its customers and improved its worst feature, the auto stop/start system. Thank you, Subaru.

Very happy with my 2020 Forester Sport which was a jump of two generations. I had a lot to learn at the beginning. Decided not to turn off the engine stop after using it for awhile. Hope the new Foresters please their owners as much as mine, which makes me smile every day!

I would call the auto-start feature on my 2019 Forester my second most disliked feature. My Most disliked Forester feature is the entire infotainment screen being overwritten with the volume display. I can hear the volume, why block me from pressing any other buttons to show me the volume for several seconds. Stupid. When a relative bought a used Crosstrek, he immediately complained about the volume overtaking his infotainment screen during adjustment. I am really hoping they fixed that in the newer model and would love to know if any readers have the newer Forester model.

I don't like the stop start feature as it wears out the battery usually just after the two year battery warranty runs out. On my third Subaru with this feature I realised that I could tun it off after the first start each time. I always turn it off now.

I've a 2019 Forester Touring Love the car with the following exceptions the start stop feature I turn it off as soon as I start the car. The noise levels in the car on the road are higher than I feel they should be you can't hold a conversation without raising your voice the lack of a turbo option and lastly the eye system sensitivity needs a fix.

Have 2023 Forester. I don't like the stop/start feature. Disable it when driving, but have to re-disable it every you manually turn the engine off and restart it. No way to permanently disable feature. Very annoying.

I don't like the new touchscreen and the removal of knobs for adjusting ac and fan etc. People need to be able to adjust these things by feel and touch not by having to look at the touch screen and not having a tactical feedback of what knob or what feature they are adjusting. This new feature makes them take their eyes off the Road in order to make sure they are tapping the right place on the touch screen road in order to make sure they are tapping the correct button on the touchscreen

SAFETY HAZZARD

I just turn the auto stop/start because it is a pain. It is definitely not the Forrester’s worse issue. Road noise is my biggest issue.

Gary R, I agree. It is terribly annoying, and sometimes if I have to take long road trips I even wear earplugs. The next time I have to replace the tires I'm going to search for the quietest ones possible, and I hope it helps - at least a little!

My husband and I only drive Subarus - in fact, our total is now up to #7!!!!!! He drives a 2020 Forester Touring, and I just bought a 2023 Legacy Touring XT. We both HATE that ON/OFF feature, and instantly turn it off when we get in the car. I’m happy that on my Legacy, that feature is displayed right on the main Infotainment screen.

Overall, I don't mind the auto stop/start, maybe because I owned a Toyota Prius previously. I bought a used 2021 Forester last month. The dealer was out of 2024 models, and I couldn't wait until the 2025 models arrived. I do hate how it shuts off after I pull into my driveway, one second before I activate the electric parking brake, because it needs the engine to start up again before I can set the brake. Now THAT is lame!

I have a 2023 Forester Wilderness that I love but hate the on/off. Especially here in the desert SW where the car heats up quickly when it shuts off in the summer. I turn it off every time.

Janette Anders (not verified)    July 13, 2024 - 3:48AM

Not a fan of the stop/ start as it is very rough.
The other feature I absolutely hate is its "eye sight". This feature will switch off cruise control even though the road is visible. Diving along a highway out west, semi behind me and all of a sudden it switches off cruise control. So often this cars eye sight is not functional. Would love to get rid of it. It is so dangerous!

Lorene J King (not verified)    July 14, 2024 - 6:50AM

Start/stop feature can be dangerous when it's time to go, but you have to put on your flashing lights to completely restart the car because the start feature does not work right away. I hate it. Plus, isn't it hard on the engine having to restart the car so ma y times?

Kristen C (not verified)    July 15, 2024 - 9:54PM

I've got 2023 Subaru Forester Base Model and I HATE HATE HATE the auto stop/start feature!!!!
I turn it off the moment I turn the car on. I've often wondered if someone has banged into me when the AUTO START engaged the shaking is so intense. I wish we could permanently turn it off, but at least the option exists in some capacity.

Have owned 5 Foeresters of various generations. For me the worst feture is the CVT on later models. Not great for towing. Should be designed to have the same or better towing ability as the Outback.

Mike (not verified)    July 16, 2024 - 6:48AM

By moving the switch to turn off auto start/stop to the software screen and taking away the easy-access physical switch, Subaru has annoyed owners of the 2025 Forester, not pleased them.

Alan Mohn (not verified)    July 16, 2024 - 11:34PM

With the stop/start feature the one thing that is not discussed is the additional wear on the battery and starter. Per my local dealer to replace the starter it is over $800. When I drive to work, I can start my car once or potentially restart my engine 11 times. Today was 8 total. Another thing is when you pull into a parking lot the engine will stop and when I put it in park it restarts. That is not only inefficient, it is also very annoying. The best feature Subaru could have added is to allow me to shut off the system permanently. I normally reach down to press the button to disable the system but I have to do it every time I start the car. The little bit of gas and emissions savings will not cover the additional long term cost.
