Subaru Pulls Off What No Other Car Brand In America Can Match

Where do the Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek rank with the best-selling SUVs? They are far from the top. But there is another more interesting stat. Subaru is alone in a critical area that no other car brand can match.

Not even close.

Subaru doesn't have any models in the five best-selling new SUVs, but it has one in the top ten. The Subaru Forester ranked eighth in the best-selling SUVs list in 2024. With half a year gone, we now have a good evaluation of the top models and car brands.

Keep reading because Subaru pulled off what no other car brand has done this year.

Kelley Blue Book says, "Popularity isn't always a great indicator of value among humans, but among cars, it's a pretty reliable indicator that a lot of other people found value in popular vehicles and models because that's where they spent their hard-earned money."

Subaru has two more top picks.

Subaru has two more SUVs in the top 15 best-selling SUVs for 2024. The Outback is number eleven, and the Crosstrek is number thirteen overall. Before I explain the most amazing Subaru stat, I've listed the top 15 selling SUVs for 2024.

The 15 Best-Selling SUVs of 2024 So Far

  1. Toyota RAV4 - 248,295
  2. Tesla Model Y - 198,030
  3. Honda CR-V - 196,204
  4. Nissan Rogue - 141,160
  5. Chevrolet Equinox - 107,468
  6. Jeep Grand Cherokee - 106,751
  7. Ford Explorer - 104,803
  8. Subaru Forester - 92,849
  9. Hyundai Tucson - 92,146
  10. Chevrolet Trax - 90,463
  11. Subaru Outback - 81,703
  12. Kia Sportage - 79,853
  13. Subaru Crosstrek - 79,500
  14. Jeep Wrangler - 77,204
  15. Honda HR-V - 76,263

#8. Subaru Forester

Total Units Sold: 92,849

What does Kelley Blue Book say about the Forester?

"The Subaru Forester is new for 2025, with a subtly redesigned look and upgraded tech and features, including new premium options like DriverFocus distraction mitigation and a motion-activated power tailgate. Standard AWD and plenty of ground clearance are part of the mix. However, you can increase off-road ability even further with the available Wilderness trim — although the Wilderness model is still based on the previous-generation 2024 Forester."

#11. Subaru Outback

Total Units Sold: 81,703

What does Kelley Blue Book say about the Outback?

"Some might call it a wagon, but Subaru calls it an SUV, and with standard AWD, up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance (Wilderness model), and more than 75 cubic feet of cargo space, who are we to argue? Whatever you call it, the Outback is a comfortable, affordable choice with genuine off-road and bad-weather ability."

#13. 2024 Subaru Crosstrek

Total Units Sold: 79,500

What does Kelley Blue Book say about the Crosstrek?

"The Subaru Crosstrek blurs the boundaries between hatchback and crossover SUV, with the distinction becoming essentially meaningless in the face of the Crosstrek's standard AWD, 5-passenger seating, 54.9 cubic feet of cargo space, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance (or 9.3 inches of ground clearance in the Wilderness model)."

Something else is going on with the top car brand models.

If you look closely, Subaru does what no other automaker has done. Check out what is going on with the top car brands.

I see some impressive stats about Subaru from the 15 best-selling SUVs in America ranking.

  • Toyota only has one model in the top fifteen models—the RAV4.
  • Tesla only has one model in the top fifteen—the Model Y.
  • Nissan, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia also have only one model in the top fifteen top models in 2024.
  • Honda, Chevrolet, and Jeep are the only car brands with two models in the top fifteen SUVs.

Subaru is alone in a critical statistic.

Subaru of America is the only car brand with three vehicles in America's top 15 best-selling SUVs. This is a rare and impressive feat in the automotive industry.

Subaru holds an enviable ranking with the Forester compact SUV, Outback midsize SUV, and Crosstrek subcompact SUV. It's not easy to do, having three top-selling vehicles in the top 15, but Subaru of America has done what no other automaker has been able to do.

It's a testament to Subaru's popularity with its top three SUVs.

Check out Consumer Report's most popular new SUVs.

According to Consumer Reports (by subscription) updated list of the ten most popular new SUVs today, the Subaru Forester is the most popular model, the Subaru Crosstrek is number four, and the Subaru Outback is number five overall.

These rankings are not just based on popularity but also on the unique features and performance of these models, which I covered in detail in my report here

Why are Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek the best sellers?

All three SUVs come with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive technology, providing superior all-weather and severe-weather performance. You won't be sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow when the weather turns ugly.

There is something for everyone.

Subaru's top three SUVs, the Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback, offer a unique combination of features and performance. They all come with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive technology, providing superior all-weather and severe-weather performance.

In addition to getting the highest road test scores, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety, these models have 8.7 inches of ground clearance, X-Mode for additional all-terrain performance, and the 2024 Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek now have the rugged Wilderness trim levels for outdoor enthusiasts.

Where do the Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek rank with the best-selling SUVs? They are not at the top, but Subaru is the only car brand with three SUVs in the top 15 best-selling SUVs. This unique position sets Subaru apart in the highly competitive SUV market.

What about the fact that they are still fairly unreliable, with fragile motors and CVT transmissions? While the all wheel drive system is amazing, they're still often in the shop with expensive repairs to both. If you're going to hype up a Subaru it seems best to qualify the statement with expectational maintenance and a manual transmission.

bahahaha. exactly! Subaru owners get stung and usually don't go back. Everyone gets enticed by their amazing (no lie) AWD system but forget about the crap engine and misc other issues. It's not the worst vehicle but it's not Toyota reliable. I've owned three new Subarus and have never made it over 100k without major issues or any issues. I've gone back to Toyota. Once they get rid of that ancient flat four technology, I will think about going back to their awesome AWD system.

Subaru has is a long standing "feature" related to its "Starlink" (think OnSat) system. Starting in about 2017, in it's Outback and related models, it's DCM (communication unit for Starlink) is wired to be on continuously whether the ignition is on. About the late 2020, the national cellular 2G and 3G networks were shutdown which the DSM uses.. The DSM was programmed to constantly connect and at that point it panics to have lost communication causes it essentially try to "Phone Home!" continually while the car was turned off. In my case (and many others) the battery would last about 5 days before it was dead and damage itself. Subaru blamed me and other owners because we didn't drive the car enough on long trips. Subaru was sued in a class action suit, and replaced my battery 4 times when my battery died, but didn't acknowledge the actual problem just the symptoms. A shade tree mechanic found the problem and came up with a simple solution for under $10 in parts.
. . . We went back to Toyota and a new RAV4 Prime, since Toyota takes responsibility for their vehicles and values their customers.

I owned a 2009 forester ll bean and it was a lemon with that version of the 2.5x. The visibility was great and it was fun to drive. I recently bought a 2024 XT onyx Outback. The 2.4 L merges better on the Freeway. The AI is dangerous. It’s like a tank and hard to see out of and park. X-mode deep snow and Mud performs nicely. Stereo was an upgrade rubber bumpers hold water.

If you combine the sales figures for all three Subaru models, then Subaru ranks #1 in this category with 254,052 units sold.

Sorry @Leon. You are wrong. Honda would rank first.
I've been through 3 Subaru, and after 200k, you need a new transmission on them which is quite costly.
These are built for people who commute less than 300 miles per week.

We own both a 2009 Forester with 220,000 miles and a 2012 Outback with 108,000. Both have been great SUVs to have. They both get about 30 mpg highway. In bad winter weather I never had a complaint about getting around in them. I plan on purchasing more in the future.

For a moment, I thought the new WRX would be the main topic of this article.
This because: starting with an Ascent 2.4l engine that runs on regular gas, taking 1000 lbs off the weight of the car, adding the use of premium gas but reducing the torque from 1500 to 5000 rpm (where the engine will mostly be used) and ending up with the same fuel economy ad the heavier Ascent is a feat that probably no other automaker could achieve.

I have a 2020 Subaru Impreza Hatchback.
It’s Symmetrical AWD.
It got thru our Michigan Winter like a Champ. It hold the road in snow, sleet, freezing rain, hail, torrential rains, like all Subaru’s.
