There's A New Subaru Starlink Lawsuit And What You Need To Know Now

Another Starlink lawsuit is filed against Subaru. Here is what customers need to know. The lawsuit includes some Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, and Legacy vehicles. See if your model and year Subaru are included in the new lawsuit.

Subaru of America is hit with another class action lawsuit involving its Starlink multimedia system. A new report from Top Class Actions says Subaru vehicles equipped with the allegedly defective Starlink infotainment system now include the 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, 2019-2023 Forester, 2019-2023 WRX, and 2019-2023 Legacy vehicles, according to the new Subaru Starlink lawsuit.

Previously in 2020, Subaru of America settled a lawsuit concerning its Starlink multimedia system involving the 2018 Subaru Forester, 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2018 Legacy, 2017-2018 Impreza, and 2018 BRZ. A New Jersey Judge signed an order valued at $6.25 million benefiting 785,000 Subaru owners and lessees.

2023 Subaru Starlink lawsuit

This month, attorneys Andrew W. Ferich, Robert R. Ahdoot, and Bradley K. King of Ahdoot & Wolfson, PC filed the lawsuit against Subaru, claiming the automaker is guilty of “unjust enrichment, common law fraud, and fraudulent concealment, and of violating the New Hampshire Consumer Protection Act and New York General Business Law, among other things.”

Plaintiffs Marco Cillufo (2021 Subaru WRX), Jeffrey Quarles (2019 Subaru Forester), Pamela Doze (2022 Subaru Outback), and Carl Jean-Louis (2019 Subaru WRX) claim the allegedly defective Subaru Starlink system presents a safety risk for drivers of the 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, and Legacy vehicles by disabling safety features and presenting drivers with “distracting and frustrating” effects.

2023 Subaru Starlink lawsuit

The Subaru Starlink head units involved in the previous class action were Harman Gen 3 audio and navigation head units. However, Subaru recently switched to Starlink head units built by Denso.

According to the new class action lawsuit, the Subaru multimedia system problems can only be fixed by replacing the display screen. According to the new class action lawsuit, the Subaru multimedia system problems can only be fixed by replacing the display screen. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges replacement Starlink head units fail because they are as defective as the originals.

The new Subaru Starlink lawsuit also says Subaru was aware of the alleged defect based on “related service bulletins” because it conducted pre-release vehicle testing, and the suspected deficiency “manifests so quickly.”

In addition to the Starlink system issue of rebooting and other malfunctions, the lawsuit alleges the automaker’s EyeSight driver assist safety technology can fail. The new class action further alleges Subaru knew about the multimedia system problems because the automaker settled a previous Starlink class action lawsuit.

The report says plaintiffs Cillufo, Quarles, Doze, and Jean-Louis “are demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive relief along with an award of punitive damages for themselves and all class members.”

What can Subaru owners do?

If you are experiencing problems with your Subaru Starlink system in your 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, or Legacy, take your vehicle to a Subaru retailer. The Starlink equipment is covered under the new vehicle warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles. Stay tuned, and we will bring Subaru customers any further information on the Subaru Starlink lawsuit.

I bought a used 2019 Impreza last year (only 5k miles like new) and the Starlink system has NEVER worked correctly. It goes out all the time, all the apps go black and it reboots. Navigation, calls, everything drops!

22 WRX Premium, cvt with eyesight. Rain, sun, clear skies have all kicked my eye sight out. And I can't count the number of times the starlink has reset. Usually when GPS is giving the detailed info for multi turns. Fix this!

Defective Starlink Infotainment system. SOA is unable and unhelpful as well as 2 dealerships. 2019 Outback 2.5i Limited with less than 30k miles is unsafe and inconvenient and very frustrating to drive.

My navigation on my Outback only functions closeup, so I only see where I am within a few hundred feet. This is a 2019 Outback and has about 45,000 miles. Love Subaru but may have to part ways.

Dealership in Indianapolis tells me I need to update on my own.

I have a 2018 Subaru Outback only 45,000 miles. About a month ago my radio started acting up. I just got back from the Subaru dealer. My audio system is covered under my warranty. I was told it’s a known issue and it will take 7 MONTHS to get a new one. That’s UNACCEPTABLE! I want to be a part of this lawsuit!

We all should be a part of this class action lawsuit, my car is a 2022 Outback. We shouldn’t deal with this unsafe experience. This is vehicle is unsafe driving at night, barely able to view your dash with a completely black panel.

Rena McLawhorn (not verified)    May 30, 2023 - 6:56AM

I have a 2022 Outback, I received a message from STARLINK stating that the EyeSight System light is on 5/22. On my way home from work on the 28th, the panel was dim but before I arrived at home the screen was a complete blackout. The screen was frozen , non-responsive…..the next morning the screen but at night again you could barely seen any interior lights on the dash.

I have a 2018 Legacy Subaru with Starlink Radio Failure problems. I know this lawsuit has already closed. The 5-year warranty covers me. I brought it to the dealer, and they keep telling me the radio is on backorder. It has been over four months, and it keeps
giving me the runaround. Any advice? Our family has been Subaru loyal customer. My daughter has a 2021 Crosstreck. Is this covered under the new law suite?

Stephanie Jones (not verified)    May 31, 2023 - 8:02PM

Bought my Subaru Outback back in 2019. Within a few months I had to have the driver seat replaced because the rails were bad. In October 2022 the radio went bad. I am still waiting for a new one. My local dealer says they have no estimated time for a new radio. This is my first and last Subaru. I bought it because they are known for their longevity, but I think those days are over.

I have a 2020 outback, the screen blacks out. I have brought my outback to the Subaru dealer at least 5 different times. Every time, I am told they installed a software update. Then I am told, the Subaru mechanic must witness the screen blacking out, if they don’t personally witness the event, they cannot replace the screen, I produced a video of the screen going black, not accepted

I have a 2021 Outback XT Onyx edition. The same problems as others are reporting. Random reboots. EyeSight disengages in rain and snow. Lane departure assist struggles to understand where the lane edges are. Occasional auto-braking when nothing is in front of me. I read via other sites there is a March 2023 update that has a lot of updates--hopefully, updates to address many of these issues.

I have a 2018 Legacy and have been waiting nearly a year for a new Starling radio head, I was unaware of the class action law suit that took place. Is there anything I can do now with this issue?

DANIEL JOSEPH MIELKE (not verified)    June 5, 2023 - 8:27PM

We recently had our 2018 Outback 3.6 in to have the system updated.
Since my wife's phone won't stay connected. T MOBILE indicated the phone was fine. Anyone had this issue and did you get the issue resolves. Please reply
Dan

Just bought a 2024 Crosstrek. Paid the additional cost for Srarlink. Touch the Starlink app and it says to download the app for my phone. There is no app. So therefore no Starlink.

I’ve had intermittent problems with my STARLINK unit but until reading about the lawsuit and details other users are having didn’t realize the full extent of the issues. I’ll be going to my dealer to report the problems and will be interested in their response…

I have recently been experiencing a battery drain issue on my 2019 Subaru Outback, which just passed 36k miles. I brought this into Subaru dealer after my local mechanic was unable to diagnose the issue and suggested it may be a warranty issue. Subaru dealer ran a series of tests, recharged the battery, installed updates, but could not guarantee that it would continue. They did find that because I did not renew the Starlink subscription and when the car was idle for a few to several days, the Starlink system continued searching in the background for updates, etc., and would draw on the battery thus causing the vehicle to not start. This was most recently occurring intermittently. I am concerned since I had never had this issue for the 4.5 years I've owned the vehicle and purchased a Subaru for its reliability. The dealer had noticed over the last couple of weeks that at least 3 other customers had experienced this as well with their 2019/2020 Subaru model vehicles. The dealer did suggest, albeit not happily, that perhaps I should renew the Starlink subscription ($99/year) so the vehicle can perform the necessary updates. The dealer in no way suggested that this was the solution and directed me to call the Customer Advocacy number to seek some remediation for this issue. It seems these things always happen to occur when something just falls out of the warranty period. I am interested in any information you can provide and to be notified of participation in any class action lawsuit.

Suburu agreed to a 5 yearc100k extension to your 2019 warranty
With regards to your issue. This happened in 2020. Check with your dealer. I believe this site has the article associated with the warranty extension settlement.

2021 Outback, purchased Nov. 2020. I have had issue with this vehicle since three months after purchasing it in 2020, beginning with the USB ports not working, and the driver Monitoring System shutting down.. It has been in the shop around 100 days, give or take a few, with issues relating to the Starlink and Infotainment systems. None of the issues have been fixed, but because they aren't continual, they can't seem to be replicated in the shop. I've been made to feel like these issues are unheard of, caused by something I'm doing, or that I'm exaggerating. I have documented everything, (mostly in emails to Subaru of America), but my more recent emails to SoA regarding the issues, have gone unacknowledged. Last year, SoA sent me a letter mentioning the Lemon Law, and asking the shop for specific documentation. I was later told (by the shop manager) that SoA reprimanded him for my car being in there so many times for the same issues. A few days after that, I received an email from SoA, saying the shop has indicated all issues have been repaired satisfactorily, and my case has been closed. I still have no USB power; the Driver Monitoring System turns off 98% of the time; the map tends to show locations completely foreign to where I am; the Eye Sight System turns off randomly; the rear cameras rarely, if ever, pick up pedestrians anymore, and only occasionally a moving vehicle; the voice control turns off the radio and audible map directions, and doesn't accept commands; text messages no longer come through the Bluetooth; the Infotainment screen randomly turns off; and the speakers tend to turn off, or blare loudly after using the phone. My remote start app I paid for, stopped connecting 10 months after I purchased it. And now, the gasket on the sunroof has fallen off, so I can't slide it open, and I can't close the solid panel, but hey...I can tilt it up! the car goes back in the shop tomorrow for routine maintenance, and hopefully a fix to the audio system glitch, and take another shot at fixing the USB's, so I have access to Apple CarPlay, so I ca use Google Maps on the screen, rather than constantly looking down at my phone.

Pretty angry writing this, not proof reading. The day I bought my 2019 Legacy the volume would not work and I perfectly recall the dealer resetting the system. The past 4 years the entire StarLink has been a failure. I told the dealer and the service dept and each time they said "we can't reproduce the problem." Lies Lies Lies. Finally they said they will replace and now when I call the only thing I get is 20 minutes on hold and "your part is on back order, we don't know when it will arrive." Never been so frustrated with a map the stops working, channels rapid fire changing, volume full blast or no sound, touch screen won't work. I have videos of this, and still the dealer lied to me and said, "nothing is wrong, hold down the power to reset." If it was that simple to fix I wouldn't be here, it is broke every time I drive and I want to make them pay as much $$$ as possible so they can feel the frustration and safety problems they have caused me. It was until I mentioned the class action lawsuit that they folded and said "we will order your replacement." Now I read the replacements are faulty??? No justice for the consumer. We are all done for. Subaru does not care. I'm getting my fix and selling the car.

I have 2019 Subaru Outback and the infotainment system has started to freeze, randomly switch screens, and become unresponsive.

I can perform a reset however this fix is short term (hours or minutes later it is back to misbehaving).

STARLINK touchscreen in my 2018 Legacy has been functioning poorly for a few months. Screen freezes, Apple CarPlay works part time. I have to reboot daily and still doesn’t help. But I was never notified of a class action. Car is still under warranty. Is it still possible to be included?

I'm with you - We have had 7 Subarus. The quality is gone and everything thing is an expensive fix at crazy low miles. Even though their base prices have increased significantly, they have become disposable junk vehicles that are unreliable and no longer safe.

2018 suburb outback, touch screen not working, dealership wants 2300k to replace. I also went to auto part store after I left dealership and they checked trouble codes and my eyesight is showing a trouble code, dealership didn’t mention that one when they had my car for 4 hours today.

I am bringing my 2021 Subaru Outback in AGAIN for the Starlink system problems. This car is garage kept and only has 11,000 miles on it. We bought it new in FebruRy 2021. The first problem we had was that we could not get our iPhone to work with it. We still have this problem. To resolve this the dealership, Colonial Subaru in Danbury CT, did an update and had someone train my wife and I how to use the infotainment system. The second issue happened when we were driving and the audio system became muffled and then the entire screen went black. After we pulled over and restarted the car it seemed to work fine. We took it in for service and all that was done was a system update. Today my wife got stranded when the car would not start, the steering was locked up and the brake pedal would not depress, and all of the dash lights were lit. Just prior to the no start situation, the screen asked for the numbers to pair the phone to the infotainment system. After a few more attempts, including opening and closing the door, the car started and made it home. We now have another service appointment for this problem in a few days. I plan to meet with the manager as I don’t know what I can do/what I should do.

We have a 2023 Outback. Constant problems with Starlink, Eyesight, and the engine cut off at stoplights. I have hours of video documenting the problems and can’t wait to join or put forward a lawsuit.

2019 Subaru Outback, infotainment center started acting up in February 2023. Turning on the vehicle the infotainment center cycles through all its' functions and radio channels. I do not have the ability to set any navigation. I am now told it will be November for a new unit, that will make it 10 months for repair. As it sits, I cannot drive it, especially taking it on any trips.

I have a 2022 Outback Premium, like others Eye Sight goes out in rainy conditions, also it shuts off and on while driving, if you have to make a quick stop it shuts of very frustrating and dangerous.
Only have 17000 miles on it, wondering if I made a mistake getting it?

GF (not verified)    July 12, 2023 - 4:58PM

We bought a used, one-owner vehicle 2019 Subaru Outback with 58K miles in April, right before the latest class action suit was filed. Just this week, the speaker system went completely silent. The only fix was to disconnect the battery, let it sit, and then reconnect it and restart the vehicle. This worked, but is a complete pain to have to perform, if it happens repeatedly. Additionally, the Bluetooth intermittently disconnects or fails to connect, and the radio stations occassionally skip in mid-song. We are taking it to the dealer, but since we are out of warranty, I'm sure they'll tell us nothing is wrong. Following the results of the class action suit carefully!
