Hyundai Windshields are Cracking - Customers File Lawsuit

Two plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit against Hyundai in regards to windshields prematurely cracking on their 2020 Hyundai Palisades.

An article released by David A. Wood with carcomplaints.com reported a lawsuit being filed against Hyundai by two individuals by the name of Lorenzo Ford and Tina Forehand. They are both owners of a 2020 Hyundai Palisade and unfortunately, suffered from defective windshields that prematurely cracked on them. This case is now known as Ford, et al., v. Hyundai Motor America, et al.

Lorenzo and Tina claimed a pebble had struck their windshield and left a crack. For Lorenzo, his 2020 Palisade had about 4,225 miles and got quoted $880 to replace it. Tina's 2020 Palisade had approximately 2000 miles and had to wait three weeks to get her windshield. She was charged $250 for replacement.

Prices seem to be all over, and the mileage seems to vary as well, which is natural as pebbles may occur at any mileage. Bizarrely, some owners reported their windshields cracking without even coming into contact with anything. Issues with the windshield on Palisades and even the Kia Telluride existed only a few months after owners started taking delivery of their cars. Even small insects clashing with the windshields have caused cracks, which is a bit alarming. As an automotive journalist reviewing cars, I have encountered the same problem in a Hyundai test car.

A few weeks ago, I was sent the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid as a test car. I publish video reviews on my YouTube channel, and I have been using a Manfrotto camera mount to place my DSLR camera onto the windshields of the past 100 vehicles I have reviewed. After I finished filming my review, I began to pull on the little tab of my mount to release it from the windshield and boom, and the windshield cracked on me.

This issue has never happened to me before in any other car that I have reviewed. Again, I used this mount in the last 100 vehicles that I have tested. Somehow, under the pressure of me releasing my mount, the windshield just cracked and left a massive spiderweb crack. A day later, I was driving down the highway, and a truck flung a nefarious pebble next to the spiderweb I produced and left a little crack. No matter what, the windshield in my test vehicle would've needed replacing.

Interestingly, Hyundai refuses to admit their windshields are defective. Many owners say that the cracked windshields are becoming a distraction to driving, but as of now, Hyundai requires owners to pay for a replacement windshield. These allegedly defective windshields and replacement windshields have cost owners up to $1,600.

The Plaintiffs are seeking to have Hyundai buyback vehicles, cover replacement costs, or to reimburse owners for losses caused due to their windshields. Replacing windshields can also affect the value of the car, which adds to the cost owners are already paying to replace cracked windshields.

2020 Hyundai Palisade Front

I do hope that Hyundai can quickly remedy this situation because their cars are truly great to drive and do come in at an attractive price for the masses to afford. Hyundai was touting their double junction glass technology on the new 2020 Sonata and how it even had soundproofing material inside their double pane glass. And these are all great things because the Sonata was a hushed automobile; however, I noticed that the wind noise at highway speeds became far louder and was very obviously coming from the front.

Hyundai has always done a great job listening to the consumer and giving the end-users a quality product. Hopefully, Hyundai can take this situation and turn it into a positive to help improve future cars not to have the same issues.

I was basically pressed into leasing a new 2021 Elantra due to things beyond my control, several of which were with the dealer, including "surprise" costs of converting to a loan to purchase after being initially told 1 price and then the actual costs being significantly higher. I was, and still am, extremely unhappy with the dealer and the hard sell to get something new as soon as we walked in the door to buy the Sonata we had been leasing. I loved that car, and I have never in my life been unhappy about buying a car and I will be until I can get rid of this thing which I am stuck with for the next few years. I got the car on April 10 and the windshield cracked while it sat in the parking lot (full sun on a hot day) while I was at work. I did not catch a rock or anything else that would cause me to have damage to the glass. This was in addition to ongoing issues with the dealer. I have loved my previous Hyundais and bought 3 cars from this dealer previously. I highly doubt I will buy another Hyundai, and I certainly won't buy from that dealer again. They tried to tell me that it would be free to fix through insurance, but at the moment its looking more like a $500 bill for a car that's first payment was due the day before the glass cracked. So in all I will have had to pay almost $3000 for a car I didn't want in the first place within a month of getting it. I almost could have afforded my old car for that money.

I recently purchased a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe and was driving home and something hit my wind shield. It sounded like a pebble maybe, it cracked the windsheild. This morning I looked at it (the very next day) and the crack has spread down the windshield, so it can’t be repaired, it has to be replaced. I only have 1822 miles on my vehicle and was told that it would cost around $1700 to replace it. I can’t believe the window cracked with something so small hitting it. Makes me wonder what would happen in a real crash. I’m very disappointed and hope they recall these vehicles for the windshields.

2018 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 Limited. This is our 4th Hyundai since 2003. We have had the normal chip here and there over the years. We have now had this car for about 15 months and have had to replace the front glass twice with several chips repaired on each windshield. Safelite does the work. I am flabbergasted and frustrated. Something is wrong, either the hardness, treatment, or just the angle that is sits in the design of the car.

We have a Hyundai 2020 Sonata with 12,000 miles on the way from Las Vegas to NY a small rock hit our windshield in Virginia we didn’t even notice the crack until it spread about 5 inches after we made it to NY we park our car at my wife’s home 2 days later we notice the crack spread to over a foot it hard to believe heavy truck and bus vibration would cause my crack to get bigger but that’s what happen

I have a 2021 Hyundia Sante Fe just purchased in April 2021. Came out of a store with around 5000 miles on it and there was a 6” straight crack on passenger side. We heard no noise to indicate an impact to the windshield. Now the crack has gotten longer and runs almost to the bottom of the windshield. Took it to the dealer they say there is an impact point, but I’m not convinced. Cost to replace is $1180!

Wife's 2021 sonata has 280 miles on the clock and it's already got two rock chips on the windshield and two on the glass roof. We've never had rock chips or glass damage until now. The glass used appears to be made from butter perhaps.

I leased a brand new 2019 Hyundai Ioniq, a month after they came out. In the first year, a long crack appeared on my windshield while it was parked in my driveway. There was no sign it was hit with a rock or pebble or anything. It appeared to be coming up from the bottom and runs diagonally across, nearly reaching the top.
A month ago, in the same car, I closed the hatchback and the back windshield completely shattered for no reason. There was nothing in the back of my car to make contact with it when I closed it. I was told they would not cover it because they could see no evidence of manufacturer defect. Huh? It’s shattered, there’s nothing left of it, what kind of evidence were they looking for? It’s a shame because I really liked this car and (I thought) I liked the dealership too. I even bought the extra warranty package on the glass because it was told the glass has all these sensors and things that would make it very expensive to repair, should it get cracked or something. But still, they won’t cover it. Very disappointed.

Hi Michael, I just read that there is a recall for 2020 Sonatas by Hyundai, that the windshields could dislodge upon a crash. I dont know how to attach it on this site, but you can just google it n it comes up.

Less than 10,000 miles on my 2020 Palisades a small pebble cracked the windshield, no one at Hyndai seems to care.

My 2019 Genesis G70 just did the same thing. It only has 4k miles, and sits inside heated garage. I came out and there was crack from bottom driver's left to 1/3 of the way across windshield. Hadn't been driven for over a week, and crack wasn't there the day before. No impact, and garage had neither been hot or cold. It is nice, but frustrating, to see these reports of the same thing happening to them.

I have a 2021 Hyundai - had it for less than 3 months and a small pebble hit window. I was out of state at the time, and within a half hour it expanded across my window. The impact was not even that loud, and did not expect any issues. A few days later a second crack appeared.

Over the past 40 years driving abound the country I have unfortunately had a few items hit my front windshield, with only one small crack (it was only once and after putting in some window crack "glue" it was okay and did not spread in the following years).

Because of a glass/manufacturing shortage it took a while for the shop to even get the glass in (they ordered manufacturer glass, not an aftermarket) After this happening and reading about this being a defective windshield, I hope it does not happen again and thinking I made the mistake of not getting the (cheaper, but better made) after-market windshield, which would have also taken less time to get.

I am usually a complainer, but after 40 years of driving hundreds of thousands of miles on multiple cars and having to replace a windshield with less than three months driving a new car (and it was not even a large rock/object), I believe I am understandably upset.

2021 Sante Fe. While driving home from golf yesterday I heard a slight "tick" sound and within minutes an 8 inch crack appeared on the far right edge of my windshield. There was very little traffic on the road and the vehicle ahead of me was not close enough to have thrown up a stone to hit the windshield. I will pursue with my local Hyundai dealer in Northern Ontario, Canada

Purchased a 2019 Sante Fe from Enterprise with about 10k on it. Within 3 months, front windshield started across the bottom and walked right up to the top. Teeny tiny chip.. had to replace...Safelite Auto Glass works with warranty work for Hyundai (appears to)..thinking it would be preferable to get OE glass (only cost 15.00 more) I find myself with another cracked windshield with no chip in sight. Personally, I think there is a design flaw, between the windshield and the framing around it. I think this time I will try the other glass and see if there is any improvement with wear. I have a 2016 Buick Enclave....with NO cracks after 5 years! Hyundai really NEEDS to get in front of this issue!

We purchased a new 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe. June 7th, a very small pebble hit the windshield and it cracked too bad to be filled in, like a big spider. We have been trying ever since to get the windshield replacement glass through Safelite and our insurance. It’s been nearly five months, the crack keeps growing and we can’t get the glass. It’s so frustrating. Wish I had bought another brand. Though I love the way the car drives, I won’t buy another Hyundai. It’s been a bad experience.

We have a 2020 Santa Fe purchased new in June of 2020. Finally put 14000 on it and just this week and now have found a crack in the windshield behind the rearview mirror. The crack has quickly expanded down the glass. After reading all of these complaints it makes me feel sick to my stomach thinking of calling the dealership. Ugh...

I have a Konna 2021, and it already has a 5 inches crack in the windshield, starting from the center, where the mirror is attached. I didn't notice when the problem happened.

Daroll W (not verified)    October 25, 2021 - 5:23PM

I bought a new 2021 Santa Fe on May 3rd and bought the dealers windshield insurance (should of been a sign). Three weeks later the windshield cracked about 8 inches starting on drivers side bottom corner. Submitted claim next day and Safelite ordered windshield early June; coincidentally from the same dealership as I purchased. As of this date I am still waiting for the windshield to arrive. I've stopped numerous times at Safelite and also called parts department at dealership to inquire. At first they'd give a new arrival date a week or two down the road. In July, the dealership told me most of the new windshields were arriving damaged. Now everyone is blaming the nationwide logistics backlog. Currently from outside the vehicle, the crack starts in the southeast corner and goes north-northwest about 14 inches up then turns straight west and continues across most of the passenger side then turns south-southwest towards the far southwest corner where there's about three to four inches still holding the glass together. The outside glass where the crack started is beginning to separate a bit, but the inside glass is still all intact. Like others mentioned, I too suspect this damage is being caused by some other structural problem.

I AM AN OWNER OF A 2020 HYUNDAI PALISADE AND I ALSO OBTAINED S CRACK STARTING AT THE LEFT CORNER OF MY WINDSHIELD AND IS NOW STRAIGHT ACROSS THE MIDDLE OF THE WINDSHIELD. I WANT ENEMIES DRIVI G THE TRUCK WHEN WE CAME OUTSIDE AND NOTICED IT BACK IN SEPTEMBER OF 2021 . IT'S GOING TO COST ME $1,800.00 to fix and yes I do have insurance. I need help, especially seeing that this is an issue with other vehicles by the maker.

Interesting. My windshield suddenly cracked and they blamed it to a rock. So, they were now charging me $1,100 for it to be replaced. Just WOWWW

I have a 2020 Sonata. A tiny pebble hit the body of my car next to my windshield and the thing instantly cracked about 4 inches. It's made it's way almost all the way across now. I was told by a body shop that Hyundia had recalled windshields do to a premature cracking issue. I have a 2002 Camaro... not 1 rock pick and a Dart with several rock hits yet no runs! Anyone know how we can file this with the company?

We have a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe SEL at 7,000 miles back in September had a pebble hit near bottom of drivers side windshield and before we could get it to a glass company to try fix the very small chip that you could barely see it cracked all the way across from drivers side to the passenger side. We took it to Hyundai dealership and they ordered a new glass. 4 months later we finally got one and paid our $500 deductible from the almost $1200 total and over $200 of that was to have the windshield recalibrate. One month later something tapped the windshield again and now we are not getting any help from Hyundai Motor Corporation or Dealership on this and the glass of the windshield looks very thin like the glass in an old house window. My email is [email protected] if anyone can help or knows of an attorney that is handling these type of faulty windshields. Thank you and appreciate any help.
