You just brought home your new vehicle. It's perfect in every conceivable way. However, within just days of owning it, the windshield is cracked, chipped, or another defect related to the glass presents itself. Obviously, the car is defective, and your warranty will pay for the repairs. Guess again.

Is Your Windshield Defective?
As far as we know, there is no relationship between a chip occurring and the age of a windshield. However, the likelihood that a new vehicle owner will throw up a post about damaged glass sure is. One we saw this afternoon was the inspiration for this story. It read, "Anybody notice that the glass is soft on the car? I got 2 small chips in the past 2 weeks." So I searched inside a number of groups in which I participate to see if the keywords "Windshield, chip, crack" result in a lot of activity. It's not just a lot, it's an avalanche of posts. Here is a quick rundown on some we found that seem to apply:
- My Model 3 is going in next week to replace a cracked windshield. $1,300.
- Our Honda Clarity had a tiny tiny chip near the top of the windshield in front of the driver, which has extended into a crack to the edge. I don't recall any kind of impact.
- Anyone else notice their Prius windshield is a chip magnet? I have 2 obvious chip already after 18 months.
- My 124 Spider's windshield just cracked! Safelite says just the parts are $1600 for the molding and brackets.
- I was parked and my Colorado ZR2's windshield crack right in my face... no rocks smashed my windshield.

Will Car Insurance Pay For Glass Repair?
The good news for many vehicle owners is that glass repair or replacement is a no-deductible insurance claim in some states such as Massachusetts. The option to repair or replace may be up to you.
How Many Brands Have Class Action Lawsuits Related to Windshields And Glass Roofs?
In addition to the Subaru lawsuits related to windshields, Toyota has also been sued. And also Hyundai has been sued over windshield defects in the new Palisade. Tesla's new Model Y crossover is only months old and it has already been recalled over its glass roof. Mercedes has also been sued over glass roofs. And Honda was also sued over this same issue.

I have a 2023 Honda hrv with less than 800 miles on it that has 2 chips in the windshield right in the drivers view when driving. Never heard anything hit it and is kept in the garage. My2008 Honda Element has over 200,000 miles on and only has had one chip in it. I think something most certainly must be defective either in the windshield or the new design of the car . I hope Honda will take responsibility for this.

I purchased a 2020 Toyota Highlander in November of 2022. Temperature dropped to 30 degrees. Defrosted car, not using windshield defrost but inside heater, set at 79 degrees F. Drive to work 5miles parked the car. No other vehichsks or people around where I work. Windshiekdcwas not cracked. Returned to my car at noon same day (6 hours later). There was a crack going across my windshield 5 inches from each side, about 6 inches up from dashboard. Seems much like a defective windshield.

I drove a 2009 Mazda CX-9 for nearly ten years and never got a chip or crack in the windshield even when a rock would hit it. I loved this car! Then, I bought a brand new 2019 Highlander in July, 2019. After eight months, I got two dings on the windshield within three weeks of each other. Safelight fixed one, and the other one, they couldn’t. Thankfully, it hasn’t spread. Just a month ago, I met a log truck and it threw a rock and broke my windshield at the bottom on the passenger’s side. It spread within minutes and has spread even more so now with the cold weather. I think this is the weakest, sorriest windshield I’ve ever had in a vehicle. I told my husband that something is wrong with the glass. Now, after reading several comments, I know it is. You’d think a nearly $50,000 vehicle would have better glass in it, especially since Toyota is so focused on the safety of their vehicles. Oh, and there’s a chip in the driver’s side window from a rock, too. I dread replacing my windshield! Ridiculous! $$$

2021 Corolla, Sun visor cracked my windshield. I was told at the dealership the Toyota has twin windshields only the outer one cracked you can’t feel any ridge on the inside but you can on the outside. I was pushing my Sun visor back into place while stoped at a red light missed the holder and the visor snapped into the windshield causing a spider crack on the outer pane. Dealership filed a claim Toyota said it was only the outer pane so they would not cover it.

Have had 11 repairs to my 2021 Toyota Highlander windshield in the past 9 months, each time for a small rock that caused a star or crack in the windshield. Everything that hits the windshield causes a crack of some sort. Drove a GMC Yukon for 14 years on the same roads and had 1 crack the whole time. What is wrong with this glass?

Wow I had no idea this is such a widespread problem. I have owned three Hyundai Sonatas 2020, 2023 and a 2016. I have experienced windshield dings and scratches on all three. Seems like the smallest pebble hit causes dings in the glass. Thought it was just my bad luck even though I drive mostly on improved highways no gravel roads. No cracks so far just divots and scratches. I'm older and have owned many different vehicles in my life never having the glass problems like I'm experiencing with Hyundai. Has to be a manufacturing problem that Hyundai and others are refusing to acknowledge.

Looks like the newer vehicles regardless of the brand have the same issue with how crappy and fragile the windshield is. I just bought 2023 CX-30 brand new 2 weeks ago. Driving on highway and got a ding on the 3rd day driving to work. then a week later, a few more pinholes on the windshield while driving on highway to work. My previous 2011 Kia Forte didn't have the rock chips for the first 6 years. I drove this Kia every where and going through lots of winter driving, no rock chips. The windshield was way more durable! I strongly believe that these chips on newer vehicle is due to the crappy quality and the greedy corporations trying to make money off this "wear and tear" thing. What a world we live in.

I purchased a new GMC 1500

I purchased a new GMC 1500 Denali Ultimate the last week of 2022. I have less than 1,500 miles on it. Today my wife and I were going to lunch and I immediately noticed that the front windshield has a crack. I did not notice it yesterday when I drove. I do not recall anything ever hitting the windshield. The crack is at eye level on the driver side. The crack starts at the edge of the windshield and is approximately 4” long. A few years I had a Ford F150 that as I was driving down the highway the rear window broke with nothing hitting it. Found out that was a problem with some units and Ford did replace it under warranty.
Back to my GMC, I have looked and felt across the entire crack, and see no sign of any chip where something possibly hit the windshield. I’m going to be calling the dealership Monday, hopefully they will cover it. I have full coverage no deductible glass coverage from my insurance. I hate having to make any claim knowing eventually it becomes an issue for rates to increase.

So I just bought a new 2022 leftover Lincoln Corsair. I just notice a cloudy area on the drivers side windshield. It’s not directly in front but now that I’ve seen it, I can’t help but see it. It looks like a 4 inch water stain that does not go away. Is this covered under warranty?

I have not been luck recently - my own car was twice hit while parked. The windscreen of my courtesy car Mercedes A Class 180 with 23 Reg just cracked while the demister is on this afternoon. It's only over 1 month old. How could this happen? Defective glass for sure? We did check over when the car was handed over to me and there has not any impact on the car whatsoever. Anyone has similar situation? Thanks, Grace

Wow this is crazy to find this! My brand new Hyundai Elantra windshield cracked within a few months - NO impact by any rocks or objects. I ignored crack but it traveled directly from top seam vertically across. Now another crack has started at bottom seam and traveling in strange pattern vertically across. This is safety hazard and i immediately felt it’s a manufacturer defect as this is NOT normal. I’m getting passed around at the dealership to different people who say there’s nothing they can do. This should be free replacement when there is no chip or starburst fracture anywhere in sight from something impacting window and Ive only had this car for a year.

Brought 2021 Rav4 in for servicing, there was a significant break at the bottom of the windshield, slightly left of center, and shielded by the end of the hood. Vehicle does not have 20,000 km on it.
Damage covered about half the size of an adult hand so it was a significant strike. I rarely drive the vehicle, and my spouse did not have gravel or stones hit the car whilst driving. Too big and right on the edge of the windshield, no chips from impact. Almost like it was struck by a heavy tool.
The service rep suggested something fell out of a tree on it, it is parked in the open, and there were never branches or debris that landed on it.
Never seen anything similar on all the cars i've owned since 1982. Even good sized gravel strikes did not cause this much damage. Chips yes, crush no.

I was driving about 20-25 mph and heard this loud noise, I looked through my mirror and saw the rear windshield shattered. I stopped to see if there were any objects but nothing. I believe it is a car defect. Very disappointed. Greico Honda in Johnston, Rhode Island does not want to take responsibility. They told me that they can not prove if a rock or something flew into my car and made it explode; that it is fully my responsibility to replace it. The district manager made this decision while he is on vacation.. I have made a claim throughout Honda America and they will assign a case manager to me in the next 24-48 hours but the one who has full control of this is the district manager who already said it was my responsibility. I am truly disgusted by their actions and scared to be driving a car that my rear windshield exploded out of the nowhere while driving.. is this also going to happen to my front windshield? I may have to get a lawyer involved.

I bought 2018 Camry new. Windshield got hit causing a top-bottom crack in addition to two chips within first 10-month ownership. One week after replacement, chipped again. Now got multiple chips on windshield. I had more than a dozen cars before, never had so many chips and replacement in 30+ years. I am looking for a new car, but not sure if it is a good idea to get another Toyota or Lexus. My wife had an Audi. A rock hit its windshield so much harder than my Camry but no damage at all.
