There's A New Subaru Starlink Lawsuit And What You Need To Know Now

Another Starlink lawsuit is filed against Subaru. Here is what customers need to know. The lawsuit includes some Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, and Legacy vehicles. See if your model and year Subaru are included in the new lawsuit.

Subaru of America is hit with another class action lawsuit involving its Starlink multimedia system. A new report from Top Class Actions says Subaru vehicles equipped with the allegedly defective Starlink infotainment system now include the 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, 2019-2023 Forester, 2019-2023 WRX, and 2019-2023 Legacy vehicles, according to the new Subaru Starlink lawsuit.

Previously in 2020, Subaru of America settled a lawsuit concerning its Starlink multimedia system involving the 2018 Subaru Forester, 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2018 Legacy, 2017-2018 Impreza, and 2018 BRZ. A New Jersey Judge signed an order valued at $6.25 million benefiting 785,000 Subaru owners and lessees.

2023 Subaru Starlink lawsuit

This month, attorneys Andrew W. Ferich, Robert R. Ahdoot, and Bradley K. King of Ahdoot & Wolfson, PC filed the lawsuit against Subaru, claiming the automaker is guilty of “unjust enrichment, common law fraud, and fraudulent concealment, and of violating the New Hampshire Consumer Protection Act and New York General Business Law, among other things.”

Plaintiffs Marco Cillufo (2021 Subaru WRX), Jeffrey Quarles (2019 Subaru Forester), Pamela Doze (2022 Subaru Outback), and Carl Jean-Louis (2019 Subaru WRX) claim the allegedly defective Subaru Starlink system presents a safety risk for drivers of the 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, and Legacy vehicles by disabling safety features and presenting drivers with “distracting and frustrating” effects.

2023 Subaru Starlink lawsuit

The Subaru Starlink head units involved in the previous class action were Harman Gen 3 audio and navigation head units. However, Subaru recently switched to Starlink head units built by Denso.

According to the new class action lawsuit, the Subaru multimedia system problems can only be fixed by replacing the display screen. According to the new class action lawsuit, the Subaru multimedia system problems can only be fixed by replacing the display screen. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges replacement Starlink head units fail because they are as defective as the originals.

The new Subaru Starlink lawsuit also says Subaru was aware of the alleged defect based on “related service bulletins” because it conducted pre-release vehicle testing, and the suspected deficiency “manifests so quickly.”

In addition to the Starlink system issue of rebooting and other malfunctions, the lawsuit alleges the automaker’s EyeSight driver assist safety technology can fail. The new class action further alleges Subaru knew about the multimedia system problems because the automaker settled a previous Starlink class action lawsuit.

The report says plaintiffs Cillufo, Quarles, Doze, and Jean-Louis “are demanding a jury trial and requesting injunctive relief along with an award of punitive damages for themselves and all class members.”

What can Subaru owners do?

If you are experiencing problems with your Subaru Starlink system in your 2019-2023 Subaru Outback, Forester, WRX, or Legacy, take your vehicle to a Subaru retailer. The Starlink equipment is covered under the new vehicle warranty of 3 years/36,000 miles. Stay tuned, and we will bring Subaru customers any further information on the Subaru Starlink lawsuit.

I have a 2021 WRX STi and I think the starling is defective as well as the Bluetooth for calls is absolutely horrible. Sounds like you are in s wind tunnel when someone tries and calls you. This is so against safety as you have to puck up your phone and that’s against the wall and defeats the purpose of the functionality

I bought my 2019 Forester in November 2020. Car Guru indicated it was a lemon due to a "radio" issue. Shortly after purchase, I couldn't access wifi or any apps. I was told the module was defective and was replaced at that time. Since then, I've been noticing everything described in this article. My car now has 54K miles so I'm not sure replacement will be covered. Waiting to hear details on a class action suit....

I took my 2021 wrx in a couple months ago complaining of issues with the system it was doing all kinds of funky things including volume changing on its own flipping through apps, and different screens changing radio stations on its own basically like someone was manually changing things however they couldn't get it to do it when they had it in the shop.so sent me on my way it does it so sporadically that it is hard to figure out why or when it is going to do it.

We have 2021 Forester and the Starlink has failed several times. Disabled all the safety features. The dealer says they can't locate the problem.

22 WRX with the same issues with head unit restarting, locking up with a dead screen. Just started a year after I bought it.

I have a 2019 STI premium with a starlink headunit that has an excessive parasitic drain even while the car is off. Already has ruined a battery by depleting it beyond charge/repair.

Outback 2019: purchased new 12/31/2019. On 05/01/23, car (mileage: 33,692) serviced due to battery drain. Parasitic drain test revealed that Subaru Starlink was draining the battery. Service department "fixed" it be removing 7.5A fuse for Starlink. I was told that I needed to subscribe to Starlink in order to stop the battery drain and have all of the Starlink functions work. I asked about replacing Starlink module and was told it would not stop the battery drain. HELP!! I did not buy this vehicle for just some of the features advertised! The battery drain started in January 2023. I do not have any complaints with my dealship's service depart or staff. They are doing the best they can with Subaru Corp's restraints.

My eyesight shuts off randomly and the Starlink won't connect. I have an Outback, 2023. A customer rep advised me that I'm to expect Starlink issues when she did the after purchase follow up call.

Have a 2020 Outback…had some media connection problems but seem to work ok now…just took it in today because Eyesight keeps going off after about 5 minutes on road..dealer did software update & say they think that will fix it…got the ‘disabled’ message 5 minutes after I left dealership…stopped car, started up…now it’s working again…Was going to get a new Subaru….not anymore!

2020 Outback Touring XT. Many problems with screen, including going blank and not being able to use the heater/defroster while traveling in the snow. Very dangerous and we took it in for service multiple times, to no avail. Car was totaled and we replaced it with a 2021 Outback Touring XT. The screen went blank once for a brief time. This car also has had ongoing issues including significant delays in responding. Such a confusing display that the passenger always takes care of things when there is a passenger in the vehicle.

I have had mine in the shop so many times to reload the software.

Reloading does nothing.

This is probably a firmware or hardware issue and they need to replace the hardware or update the firmware and they are not doing either one.

Mine does everything everyone else has said, freezes, reboots, shuts off, gives invalid information. Etc.

My 2019 Subaru Outback Touring needs the whole entertainment system replaced. It continuously calls random numbers over and over and I have to grab phone to try canceling because screen doesn’t work. Constantly making noises and I can’t stop it so I barely drive it because it is so distracting and I have to use my phone only for navigation, phone calls music etc… with all the beeping of the screen in background with ETA on when there will be a new replacement. Frustrating and a safety hazard. I will not let my daughter drive it for this reason.

My 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness (like James G.) infotainment system, dashboard display, and all dials completely shut down and reset while driving 70-80 mph on the expressway in Houston, TX. Gillman Subaru Southwest was completely helpful and did a system reboot & update to the infotainment system. The Service manager said they've had other 2021-2023 Outbacks with the same issue and could only explain it as a glitch between the dashboard computer system and the infotainment computer system. He said that apparently when the two systems lose communication with each other, they then reboot themselves as a fail safe to regain communication. Luckily I was in the right lane and was able to coast with traffic until system rebooted. Additionally a bug that is annoying, I could use iPhone maps and directions without any issues, yet as soon as I plug into CarPlay the infotainment system loses track of my location, jumps to different areas of the map, tells me to do u-turns while on the expressway, etc. It's comical, yet frustrating and could really be safety issue.

My spouse and I have a 2021 Crosstrek that has had multiple head unit replacements (the first issues occurred within less than 6 weeks of ownership of a NEW car) and has faulty, distracting display issues and other issues with the radio. We have been trying to find a solution with Subaru for nearly a year and a half and keep being told that they cannot replicate the problem to diagnose it despite having video evidence and bringing the car to the dealership with the display problems and making sure the technicians can see the problem for themselves. We just want our car to function reliably, is that too much to ask?

We have a 2021 Forester. We have had problems with the EyeSight System since we purchased the vehicle. I previously owned a 2019 Forester and it was a problem in that car also.

Joy Wallen (not verified)    May 12, 2023 - 9:35AM

I own a 2021 outback and have had nothing but problems with STARLINK and Eyesight. For 2 years I kept visiting my dealer who just updated the radio. Finally I threatened a Lemon Lawsuit. They removed defective parts and replaced the screen. To no avail. They contacted STARLINK who reinstalled the system in my car. The technician told us that STARLINK never worked in my car because it was downloaded improperly. Supposedly now fixed. It’s not!!!

March 31st of this year I purchased a 2023 Subaru outback wilderness. Within 3 days the star link system failed. It has been at the dealership ever since. The dealership is stonewalling. I do know the head unit has been replaced twice. Their latest advice is to take the vehicle home and hope for a software update. I've contacted the Subaru consumer advocacy group. Supposedly my contact there is discussing options with the company.... That may take at least another 10 days. Given what I've read hereI wonder if that is a ruse as well.

Starlink won't work. Subaru claimed there was an update to the system from 3G to 5G. I never got the update, now Subaru wants nearly a $1,000 to replace the module in my 2019 Subaru Outback. Have called and they won't do anything about it. Help......

I have a 2018 Forester. I tried to activate Starlink and was told that wasn’t possible and that Stsrlink isn’t being used anymore. So I have no options!

I'm so glad there's a class action law suit for this! We've been waiting for a replacement screen for several months with no end in sight. The faulty screen is not only dangerous, it randomly calls people, so I'll be driving along and then the screen, connected to my phone, calls people and when they answer, you can speak for a second and then it hangs up on them! SO DANGEROUS. Back up camera doesn't work, radio stations change constantly, and the worse part: you can't really turn it completely off!!!!

Kim McNee (not verified)    May 19, 2023 - 8:10AM

Battery drained. Filed claim under the battery settlement so an authorized dealer could evaluate the issue. Was told today that the DCM is draining the battery. Told part is out of warranty but the dealer as "good faith" is going to replace for free. However part is backordered and I am the 4th person in que for this fix. I was told to keep a trickle charge on the battery, and to keep jumper cable with me at all times. Sound like the DCM is somehow related to this Starlink issue- would that be accurate?

2019 WRX....

Loved the WRX through WRC since I was a boy.
Strange how an infotainment system can destroy every single aspect of driving and car ownership.

I thought it was mainly Android Auto. Nope. It's all you Subaru

Bridget Bushey (not verified)    May 20, 2023 - 8:09PM

I know my car wasn't listed but I own a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and previously owned TWO 2020 Subaru Imprezas (yes, two. I was sold TWO imprezas in one year that were both labeled as lemons & Subaru of America replaced them) but anyways... BOTH of these models I've had issues with starlink in. My Crosstrek (that i LOVE) is now randomly disconnecting and the light (the pond above your head) will turn red, instead of its usual green light. And it sends me a message on my screen saying that it's not working. I've brought it in to Subaru dealers twice now, and they say they documented it, contacted starlink tech and it's fine. In my 2020 impreza I had the screen go completely black numerous times in a few months after purchase. Also it would randomly freeze and become unusable.

Took my 2019 Subaru to the dealer. No joy. I contacted Subaru and they have blown me off. Said I'll have to pay $985 for a new module. Is this crazy or what. I need help. Where or Who do I contact to get this resolved?

My outback Starlink system has been malfunctioning. I’ve had the replacement on order for three months. Told today they have no idea when it may be in. So frustrating

Jp (not verified)    May 23, 2023 - 10:17PM

2021 ascent touring, infotainment has been a nightmare since day 1. I’ve had nonstop issues, from speakers blowing, screen freezing, amp failing…my volume/ sound randomly went out today. Complete. Disaster.

Cheryl Campbell (not verified)    May 25, 2023 - 10:44AM

2020 Outback at 35,000 miles has navigation issues where radio volume decreases, but no verbal directions are given. Then radio volume goes back up until next direction, which is not heard, and volume decreases again. Turn off car and radio goes off immediately -no delay. Turn off car and open door and radio is still on so I have to get back in car and close and open door to get it to go off. Eyesight goes off randomly when it's not raining or any adverse reason why it should. Messages won't download so no notifications. Sometimes don't get incoming calls and can't make outgoing calls. My car has been at shop for 3 weeks and I was just told, there will be a "fix" for all this, but not until September. So I'm supposed to drive my car for 4 months with all these things that need fixing and no guarantee the September fix will correct these issues. I don't use CarPlay because I frequently don't have a cord in my car-someone has removed it, etc., but was told I need to do that until they can "fix" the issues.
