Subaru Slapped With Another Lawsuit; Have You Had Starlink Problems?

2018 could be described as the year of the lawsuit for Subaru. They are slapped with another one. See what they are being sued for now.

Subaru gets slapped with another lawsuit and this one doesn’t involve the Subaru Boxer engine. This one involves their Subaru Starlink infotainment system in the 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2017-2018 Impreza, 2018 Legacy, and 2018 BRZ.

Subaru’s Starlink offers a suite of onboard technology bringing multimedia content with smartphone connectivity, navigation, and extra safety to Subaru vehicles. A driver can use the Starlink system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth. The technology also includes the screen for the backup camera, controls for the radio and audio system.

According to a report from carcomplaints.com, the new lawsuit alleges the Subaru Starlink infotainment systems “freeze and malfunction because the head units fail, and updates offered by the automaker have allegedly failed to fix the systems.” The Starlink systems consist of Harman Gen 3 audio and navigation head units, and the lawsuit alleges it's the head units that create safety concerns for Subaru drivers.

The plaintiff, Chad Udeen, from Tennessee, represented by Chimicles & Tikellis, and J. Llewellyn Mathews, says shortly after he leased his new 2018 Subaru Outback, he began experiencing problems with the Starlink system. Udeen claims the screen went blank multiple times and continued to get worse until the head unit failed in April 2018. After multiple trips to the Subaru dealer, and having the head unit replaced, his problem was still not fixed.

10 alleged Starlink problems

The lawsuit alleges there are 10 problems with Starlink including the backup camera freezing/or shutdowns, loss of audio functions, complete system lockup, display shutoff, inability to shut radio/audio off or turn high volume level down when backing up, radio comes on at high volume when the car is turned on, smartphone favorites aren’t saved, audio/radio functioning is erratic, touchscreen controls are unresponsive, and Bluetooth connectivity issues.

Even though Subaru has issued at least two Starlink software updates to fix the head units, the lawsuit claims some customers weren't helped much by the updates or by technical service bulletins (TSBs) issued by Subaru to dealerships. The lawsuit also says new TSBs are supposed to be sent in July 2019 to correct the problem because the past updates have failed to work on the 2018 Subaru Outback, 2018 Crosstrek, 2017-2018 Impreza, 2018 Legacy, and 2018 BRZ. Same/similar problems with my 18' Outback. On my third head unit with no improvement. Local dealer is completely clueless. Stonewalled by dealer and Subaru National Service.
Make your voice heard. Call 1-800-SUBARU3 (1-800-782-2783) and register your complaint. Be sure to get a "Service Request Number".

DL (not verified)    March 14, 2019 - 10:12PM

I have taken my 2018 Crosstrek to the dealers to address recall code: WUA86. That involves having the latest firmware revision: Rel_U0_18.43.20 uploaded to the Subaru head unit. Although 90% of my problems have been addressed, I am still having problems.

Called Subaru of America and spoke to someone at their recall division who then intern forwarded me over to their customer service division. Please note: Your conversation is being recorded. After confirming that my phone is in fact listed as a supported device (that fully isn’t working) they would email me with various links and a service request number. It has now been over 8 hours and still waiting on that service request number.

I don’t know what to think in this matter other than Subaru is at ends with this problem and they have done all they can do. We are now, as consumers, at the mercy of this class action lawsuit in order to get a revised radio.

I called Subaru Of America customer service and requested a service request number for recall code WUA86 (again) they claim they've sent it me two times to the email address on file. I advised them it was never received and if they can provide that to me verbally. They cannot. After visiting a popular electronics store over the weekend and synching my phone with 5 different android auto radios and having EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM WORK streaming music via Bluetooth, it's apparent and quite clear; Subaru is installing defective radios inside there vehicles and they don't care. It's my problem and it's going to cost me $500 to $800 (at the least) to fix it.

Does anyone make an aftermarket radio kit that will put my worries to rest with something more basic and reliable what I once thought Subaru was all about until owning my second one, not to mention remove half of the functionalities of the car lighting locks etc.?

my 2018 crosstrek is only 17 months old:: it is on it's THIRD radio already:: also 8 visits to dealership for upgrades in between those radio changes:: WASTE of MY TIME:: Dealer is sympathetic but the problem is higher up at subaru:: NASA can send a spaceship to the space station FASTER than subaru can figure out how to fix a radio:: sure hope a class action lawsuit is started in CANADA soon !!! I make service advisor give me a copy of every workorder, every time ( at first they didn't want to but I'M BIGGER than he is so I was able to CHANGE HIS MIND

My system went black on Friday, March 29. Appointment with Subaru next week to hopefully fix. Hearing horror stories. Saskatchewan, Canada

I've had numerous issues with my Subaru Ascent Limited's infotainment system as well! This includes loss of audio (speakers just stop working), screen freezing, Apple Carplay freezing with Spotify app, Google Maps on Apple Carplay freezing, etc. Most of the time, I've been able to "fix" it by restarting the engine, but this has been a HUGE hassle since the system malfunctions while I'm on the freeway most of the time.

I've contacted Subaru's customer service and they've claimed that they haven't heard about these issues. If there's a class action lawsuit, I'd be happy to join in on it, if it even pressures Subaru to 1) acknowledge these are more common than they're admitting, and 2) get some fixes or replacements to improve the overall customer experience.

DL (not verified)    April 11, 2019 - 11:55AM

I've been calling Subaru CS, taking my 2018 crosstrek to the dealers. Calling Subaru customer service is useless unless you want a pair of Bluetooth headphones...Yes, that's what they sent me for a solution for my phone not playing mp3's via Bluetooth OR connected via usb cable.

wowser (not verified)    April 21, 2019 - 1:24PM

Anyone who thinks subaru has issues stop the stupid crybaby bs and take a look at honda/acura and you will see that subaru issues are nothing in comparison... Software engineers are terrible accross the board in the automotive world.

had a 2013 crosstrek XV,, NO PROBLEMS WITH RADIO EVER-- BUT my 2018 crosstrek is on it's THIRD RADIO-- SCARY THING IS THAT SUBARU HAS NO CLUE HOW TO FIX RADIO PROBLEM--I THOUGHT NEWER MODELS OF CARS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE IMPROVED over previous models

Peter Jay (not verified)    April 22, 2019 - 9:52AM

Family member's 2018 Outback has had many of the issues mentioned. Worst of them is volume getting stuck and not being able to adjust it, and connectivity issues. Get Android Auto working, and then it suddenly disconnects and won't recognize the phone it's been connected to. Finally ditched Android Auto and went with bluetooth audio only. But this confusing head unit is functionally a dud. Difficult to use, distracting, and generally a pain. Have had at least one Update done at Subaru dealer, with nothing to show for it. For what it's worth, for the volume thing, Subaru says to shut the car off and wait 3 minutes. Oh, joy.

Newest problem 2019 outback 3.6 key fob or remote start would not work at my house and another location in the same day. Go to the dealership and they tell me that it’s radio interference. I said two locations same day not likely . Worst mistake of my life buying a Subaru never again .

susan silvia (not verified)    April 22, 2019 - 2:07PM

I too purchased a brand new 2018 Impreza. Looks good but is a hunk of junk.
My radio was fine until they did a complimentary update, ever since then my radio is glitching out. SOA says they will cover under warranty only. I will soon hit 36,000 where my radio will no longer be under warranty. I was told I could purchase an extention on my warranty. How about Subaru provide me with that extension for free.
Not happening. I won't buy another Subaru

Beverly Gayton (not verified)    April 24, 2019 - 5:25PM

I have a 2018 Outback . So many problems .Starlink system is completely unsatisfactory, issues never resolved, gas gauge does not properly register the fuel , the car lost power while on the highway , the fan is now making some weird noises , air conditioner recently stopped and randomly worked again . The worst currently is sudden acceleration, cruise set to 74 suddenly went to 85 . Good luck to you all !

I have had a number of issues and Subaru claims they have no knowledge of anyone else having issues or this is how the car functions. When I point out that these issues are easily found on the internet they say they are not at liberty to discuss others issues.

1. The car called the state police around midnight. The dealership put my husbands information in the system. They called him asking if he knew where I was and that I am hitting the sos button but the police can’t find me. I did not hit the sos button and when I arrived home he was about to come out looking for me. The dealership and Subaru wanted me to see if it happens again. Then they replaced the antenna.

2. I use the navigation through my phone plugged in and it goes through the car. If a call comes in I can’t use navigation and take the call because the volume goes up and the two programs talk over each other. I am being told that’s how it works. It’s useless and I was never disclosed this information or I would not have purchased this car.

3. My radio will start sounding as if I blew out all the speakers. I have to turn off the car and wait at least 30 min. then it functions fine. Two months asking, took a video, has not been addressed.

4. Sometimes my screen just goes all stars. Not addressed. Photos provided. The screen freezes, doesn’t work. Sent videos.

5. The door chime sometimes works, other times it does not. Forwarded video, has not been addressed.

6. The plugs in the console sometimes work, sometimes not. Will charge the phone but not connect to the system. Since they can’t replicate the issue, it’s not an issue. This happened day one when I purchased the car. They claimed since I didn’t have an Apple wire and the dealership doesn’t have them, I had to purchase one and come back. It’s still a Problem.

This has been going on since last summer. I asked for someone higher than Kris at Subaru customer service. He claims there is no one higher than him. It has been a frustrating nightmare and Subaru doesn’t do a thing about it.

Michael Magid (not verified)    May 7, 2019 - 8:12AM

My 2019 Forester has similar issues. Is Subaru going to bite the billet and hire someone who is able to make this Fulton’s Folly work?

Patrick (not verified)    May 12, 2019 - 10:44AM

I have a 2019 outback limited with navigation. The radio and entire infotainment system has been malfunctioning since day one. The dealer tried several “software updates” to no avail. They then decided to replace the entire radio unit which also did nothing to resolve the issue. The problems are everything from intermittent buzzing on all am/fm stations to a complete loss of any volume to total shutdown of the system with no gps, clock or back up camera. As of my writing this the car has been at the dealership for 2 weeks with absolutely no communication, this all while I’m driving a loaner. It seems that neither Subaru nor the dealer have a clue what’s wrong with the car. I’m thinking I may need to go the lemon law route and never again purchase a Subaru. I’m very dismayed as I was lead to believe that Subaru was a well made car backed by a caring and responsive company. Both couldn’t be further from the truth.

Ed Bern (not verified)    May 13, 2019 - 9:00AM

I leased a 2019 Outback Touring April and have had trouble with my Starlink system as well. The entire system becomes unresponsive. I can't use voice control for my phone, control volume of radio or use my GPS. Dealer said they could not fix the problem because Subaru does not have a fix. Glad it's a lease and I didn't buy it. Will go back to Ford and it's Sync 3 which worked great at lease end. Salesmen was aware of the issues and did not mention, said Subaru was more concerned with the new 2020 system being better than fixing the problem for customers who already got cars.

brian krzyzaniak (not verified)    May 13, 2019 - 7:18PM

subaru-subaru dealers-subaru salespeople should ALL be sued as they ALL KNOWINGLY kept selling these cars with the KNOWN RADIO PROBLEMS that they can't fix

brian krzyzaniak (not verified)    May 25, 2019 - 11:28PM

NOW may 2019--phoned subaru with regards to my 2018 crosstrek radio problems AND the SOBs are now saying that my car's VIN is NOT EVEN in their system at all-- SURE ODD that my VIN was in their system for the 2 other phone calls I made in the last 18 months-- AND as an extra show of STUPIDITY,, subaru sent me a letter ,with the VIN in it, to tell me there was problems with the radios== if TRUMP wasn't so BUSY,, I would ask him to TALK to subaru for me !!!!

I bought a 2018 CPO Outback. After two HU replacements which the second one never worked 100%, I added up all the other problems. On a $28,000 car purchase, a CPO car, I shouldn't have had 8 different items. Reading on the forums I found that there are certain problems that constantly show up as complaints. I don't think these Subaru's are as worthy as the Subaru's of yester-year I traded in the Outback.

My 2019 Forester Sport is the 7th Subaru (and 4th Forester) we have owned since 2000 and may be the last if my radio issues are not resolved to my satisfaction.
As mentioned by many forum members above, the channel presets disappear. For me; the first two channels on the first 'page' and all 5 of the third 'page' stay programmed. The last 4 on the first page and all of those on the second page clear out for some inconsistent reason.
I have owned the car since March, and last night the display went blank. No radio, apps, ability to change settings, and no backup camera. Nothing! I checked all radio fuses and all were intact.
It decided to work again as I went to work this morning, but the time on the upper display was three hours ahead.I tried to adjust it using "Vehicle Settings" on the display, but it would not let me do it manually and using the automatic sync with my iPhone didn't work either. I did a factory reset on the system and tried to sync the iPhone by Bluetooth didn't work. After several attempts, I finally got it to send the code to my phone.
I checked the regional time setting on my cellphone app and it was correct. I changed it to CST, saved it, changed it back to EST, and saved it. I waited about 10 minutes and the upper display was correct. I don't know if what I did had anything to do with correcting the problem.
Is there a lawsuit against Subaru concerning this? What course of action can owners take to get satisfaction on these issues?

John (not verified)    June 15, 2019 - 3:18PM

I have encountered many problems with head units from my company's leased vehicles. But one thing I did with every Subaru I have owned since 2010, I replaced the head unit with a Kenwood navigation system. Have never had a problem and the rear camera works every time along with navigation in Canada and USA. A refurbished Kenwood head unit cost around $350 on Amazon and another $150 to install. Best $500 spent without all the pain and returning to Subaru dealers for fixes that don't seem to work.

I have lots of problems with my 2018 legacy 3.6
